Notes: Abstract Effective acid sites for the dehydration of 2-propanol and isomerization of 1-butene were found to be generated by glass formation of calcium metaphosphate. The number of these sites with strong acidity remarkably decreased by the crystallization of the glass, where the condensation of hydroxyl groups were significant. Thus, the sites must be the monohydrogen phosphate protons.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Fe- und Mn-Verteilung in Mineralen der Pumpellyit-Gruppe (W 8 X 4 Y 8 Z 12O56-n (OH)n) wurde mittels Mössbauer-Spektroskopie studiert.
Notes: Summary Fe and Mn distribution in the pumpellyite group minerals (W 8 X 4 Y 8 Z 12056-n (OH) n ) has been studied by using57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The studied Fe-pumpellyites, belonging to the pumpellyite-julgoldite series, were collected from two localities; metabasites in the Tokoro belt, Hokkaido, and gabbroic sills in the Shimane Peninsula, Japan. Okhotskite, an Mn3+-dominant pumpellyite group mineral, was separated from the ores of metamorphosed manganiferous iron ore deposits in the Tokoro belt.57Fe Mössbauer spectrum of Tokoro Fe-pumpellyite is composed of two Fe2+- and two Fe3+-doublets. On the basis of the single crystal structure refinements of Al-pumpellyites published so far, doublets were assigned to Fe W 2+ (IS= 1.01 andQS = 2.73 mm/s), Fe X 2+ (IS = 0.97 andQS = 3.18 mm/s), Fe X 3+ (IS = 0.29 andQS =1.37 mm/s) and Fe Y 3+ (IS = 0.36 andQS = 2.09 mm/s), whereIS is isomer shift relative to a metallic iron absorber andQS is quadrupole splitting. The Mössbauer spectrum of the Mitsu Fepumpellyite is composed of three doublets assigned to Fe X 2+ (IS= 1.14 andQS = 3.20 mm/s), Fe X 3+ (IS = 0.36 andQS =1.13 mm/s) and Fe Y 3+ (IS = 0.37 andQS= 1.93 mm/s). These assignments show strong preference of Fe3+ in the X-site. The Mössbauer spectrum of the okhotskite is composed of two doublets by Fe X 3+ (IS= 0.37 andQS = 1.13 mm/s) and Fe Y 3+ (IS = 0.42 andQS = 2.18 mm/s). The area ratio shows that Fe X 3+ :Fe Y 3+ ratio is 94:6. On the basis of chemical and Mössbauer analyses, Mn X 3+ :Mn Y 3+ ratio is given as 19:81, indicating stronger Y-site preference of Mn3+ than Fe3+, what is consistent with Jahn-Teller theory. Al, Mn3+ and Fe3+ prefer the Y-site in this order.

Notes: Summary We studied the reproductive behavior of the ponerine antHypoponera bondroiti from Okinawa, Japan. This species has dimorphic wingless ergatoid males (major and minor), dimorphic reproductive females (alate queens and wingless reproductive intercastes), and workers. Workers have neither ovarioles nor spermatheca. Major ergatoid males are the largest colony members. Two major males fought one another in the nest until one disappeared, leaving the other to occupy the nest chambers where queens emerge and mate. Minor ergatoid males also fought one another, although they seemed to be less pugnacious, resulting in occasional cohabitation of multiple minor males in the same nest chamber. Major males never attacked minor ones, allowing them to coexist in the same nest chamber. Minor males seemed to mimic females. Both major and minor males mated with both alate queens and intercastes within the nest. After mating, some alate queens shed their wings and remained in the nest, while the others left the nest for dispersal in the laboratory. Intercastes remained in the nest.

Notes: Abstract We have succeeded in transplanting human osteogenic sarcoma into nude mice. Morphologically, the transplanted tumor is chondrosarcoma and manifests calcification, but not ossification. This tumor is thought to be an excellent model for studying the process of morbid endochondral calcification. In this study, we have used in situ hybridization to examine expression of collagen type I, II, and III mRNAs in this tumor. In situ hybridization was carried out using biotinylated DNA probes. Hybridized probes were detected using a streptavidin-biotin-alkaline phosphatease reagent. The results showed that collagen type I and II mRNAs were produced by cells of the transplanted tumor. Collagen type I mRNA was chiefly localized in the marginal region of the tumor. Collagen type II mRNA, which was predominantly found in the premineralized region of the transplanted tumor, gradually decreased toward the mineralized region. Collagen type III mRNA was not expressed in the transplanted tumor. These results suggest that the character of progenitor chondrogenic cells might be transferred to the transplanted tumor, and that the tumor cells may change the expression of collagen genes with the differentiation or maturation.

Notes: Abstract An acyl-coenzyme A carboxylase that carboxylates acetyl-CoA, butyryl-CoA, propionyl-CoA, and succinyl-CoA was purified from Myxococcus xanthus. Since the enzyme showed maximal rates of carboxylation with propionyl-CoA, the enzyme is thought to be propionyl-CoA carboxylase. The apparent K m values for acetyl-CoA, butyryl-CoA, propionyl-CoA, and succinyl-CoA were found to be 0.2, 0.2, 0.03, and 1.0 mM, respectively. The native enzyme has a molecular mass of 605–615 kDa and is composed of nonidentical subunits (α and β) with molecular masses of 53 and 56 kDa, respectively. The enzyme showed maximal activity at pH 7.0–7.5 and at 25–30°C, and was affected by variation in concentrations of ATP and Mg2+. During development of M. xanthus, the propionyl-CoA carboxylase activity increased gradually, with maximum activity observed during the sporulation stage. Previous work has shown that a propionyl-CoA-carboxylase-deficient mutant of M. xanthus reduces levels of long-chain fatty acids. These results suggest that the propionyl-CoA carboxylase is also responsible for the carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to malonyl-CoA used for the synthesis of long-chain fatty acids during development.

Notes: Abstract The superconducting critical fieldsH c and the critical temperaturesT c have been measured down to 0.05 K in a series of dilute alloys ofMo Co,Mo Fe, andMo Mn. These systems haveT K /T c0 of 50, 0.3, and 15, respectively, whereT K is the Kondo temperature of the alloy andT c0 is the critical temperature of pure Mo. The critical fields atT=0 and the specific heat jump atT c have been estimated from the observedH c and compared with the theories of the magnetic impurity effect in superconductors. The behavior of these quantities and the density of states are found to depend strongly uponT K /T c0 in agreement with theory. From the results it is inferred that in the limit of largeT K the superconducting properties of a Kondo alloy would tend to those of the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory.

Notes: Abstract Autoimmune-prone lpr mice develop lymphoproliferative disorders, whereas their lymphocytes show accelerated apoptosis in culture. To elucidate whether the bcl-2 protein, a repressor of apoptosis, is critical to the discrepancy between in vivo and in vitro survival, we examined bcl-2 expression in T cells from +/+ and lpr mice during culture. The expression levels of bcl-2 in cultured T cells from lpr mice were significantly down-modulated compared to those from +/+ mice and freshly obtained T cells. Besides, the reduction of bcl-2 protein levels was inhibited in T cells cultured in the presence of T cell receptor (TCR) signalling. These results suggest that lpr T cells might be susceptible to apoptosis in vitro due to down-modulation of bcl-2 by withdrawal of TCR signalling.

Notes: Summary To determine whether regeneration of rice plants from protoplast culture induces DNA polymorphisms, progeny plants from direct regenerants of such cultures were examined for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP analysis). Significantly increased levels of DNA polymorphism were found compared with those in non-tissue culture control plants. Analysis with gene sequences representative of different functional domains, revealed that such polymorphisms are apparently widespread and not associated with any particular region. Analysis by comparative digestion with both methylation-sensitive and insensitive restriction enzymes revealed that methylation changes cannot be regarded as a major factor in the induction of these DNA polymorphisms.

Notes: Abstract  A thermosetting epoxy resin was found to form polymer particles spontaneously in a stationary reaction system using polyethers as solvents. Poly(oxypropylene) and its copolymer with poly(oxyethylene) were effectively used as reaction media. The diameter of the resultant particles depended on the structure of the amines used as hardeners as well as on the molecular weight and composition of the polyether media. The glass-transition temperatures of the particles revealed that a small amount of polyether used as the medium was incorporated in the epoxy resin particles during the polymerization.
