Description:
A technique for routinely obtaining hatchlings of oceanic squid via artificial fertilization is not available at present. This paper makes a major advance in that direction. A technique for artificial fertilization and rearing the resulting embryos through hatching for the oceanic ommastrephid squids Ommastrephes bartramii and Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis is presented that emphasizes the importnace of egg hydration and methods of obtaining chorion expansion. Initial results comparing hatching timeagainst rearing temperature show an expected decrease in time with increasing temperature.
