Notizen: In reality most welded components are loaded with a combination of different variable forces and moments that often cause a state of multiaxial stress in the fatigue-critical areas. If the multiaxial loading is non-proportional, traditional deformation-based hypotheses are not able to give a reliable lifetime prediction. This investigation is a cooperation between three German research institutes to build an experimental database for the verification of different concepts of lifetime prediction. In accordance with former investigations, a flange-tube connection made of steel P460 was used. The test program was divided into constant amplitude and variable amplitude tests. The ratio between the nominal bending and shear stress is 1. For the variable amplitude tests, a Gaussian-standard is used. A lifetime prediction software for multiaxial state of cyclic stress was developed. The software has a modular structure and allows calculations with different hypotheses and methods. The calculations are based on the local elastic stresses. This is an acceptable method for high-cycle fatigue. In this work, two general types of calculation, the Integral Approach and Critical Plane Approach and a local stress-based modification of the von Mises Criterion, the hypothesis of effective equivalent stress (EESH) are shown. The damage accumulation is performed with the elementary Miner’s rule (S–N curve without fatigue limit). The statistical distributions of the damage sums are also shown.

Notizen: An analytical fatigue lifetime prediction using the nominal stress concept and the Palmgren-Miner-Rule is performed. A comparison of prediction and experiment shows a large uncertainty. Miner-Rule modifications have been developed to improve the fatigue lifetime prediction. Stress amplitudes below the fatigue limit are assumed to contribute to the damage at different ratings. The modifications have a significant influence on the predicted fatigue lifetime especially in the high cycle regime. When the maximum stress value is just above the fatigue limit, this influence is most significant. Because there are not many test results of variable amplitude loads available for the high cycle regime, a verification is difficult. In the present paper a new modification for the lifetime prediction is applied. The modification was introduced in 1988 by Hück and suggests a variable slope of a reference S–N-curve for the damage accumulation. A parameter C and the relation between the maximum stress value of the load spectrum distribution and the fatigue limit determine the slope of the reference S–N curve. The aim is to characterize the influence factors of the parameter C using test results for the high cycle regime achieved on a new test facility and from published test data. This would lead to an improvement of the lifetime prediction in the high cycle regime.

Notizen: The present paper describes the application of artificial neural networks for estimating the finite-life fatigue strength and fatigue limit. A comprehensive database with results of single-stage tests on specimens which simulate structural components is evaluated and prepared for processing with the use of neural networks. The available data are subdivided into different classes. A total of six different data classes are specified. The results of the prediction by means of neural networks are superior to those obtained with conventional methods for calculating the fatigue strength. The experimental results are estimated with high accuracy.

Notizen: There is a commercial interest to extend the use of die-cast magnesium from low stress applications, such as interior components of motor vehicles, to components carrying significant loads. In high stress applications it is the strength and fatigue properties of die-cast magnesium alloys that limit their use. Manufacturing defects, such as microscopic shrink holes, pores and oxide inclusions, impair the strength of components under fatigue loads, but are unavoidable with present-day magnesium casting technology. In the present study, the effects of different rib thicknesses and notch radii on the fatigue strength were investigated on realistic cast specimens with unmachined surfaces. The tests were performed on ribbed specimens of magnesium alloys AZ91 and AM60 under pulsating bending stress with a constant amplitude at a stress ratio R = 0. As indicated by the results of the investigation, the real material must be considered together with its defects in designing die-cast magnesium components. For this purpose, the influence of defects must therefore be given a higher priority than the local stresses at the surface.
