    Notes: Laboratory tests of physical and mechanical properties were performed on amphibolites representing two units from the Kola Superdeep Borehole KSDB-3 (Russia) − the Proterozoic Karelian Complex (depths of 3043 m, 3530 m and 4389 m) and the Archean Kola–Belomorian Complex (depths of 7951 m, 8942 m and 9904 m). Obtained grain density and bulk density values are nearly identical for all tested samples, but porosities increased slowly with depth. Marked differences in strength properties were found between amphibolite samples from the Karelian Complex and amphibolite samples from the Kola–Belomorian Complex. The uniaxial compressive strength of the samples from the lower part of the borehole is significantly smaller than in samples from the upper part; a similar trend was found for triaxial tests. The values of the deformation modulus, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio obtained from samples of the Karelian Complex are considerably higher than those from the Kola–Belomorian Complex. Observed mechanical properties are explained by the variable grain-size distribution and by the spatial arrangement of main rock-forming minerals. These properties are also influenced by recovery of rocks from great depths.

    Description: Bryozoan and Lithothamnion limestones (BLL) from central-southern Italy, commercially known as Perlato Royal Coreno, were used for a long time in the monumental architecture of the Campania and Lazio regions.In this paper, new mineralogical-petrographical and engineering-geological data about BLL are reported and the relations between the lithofacial and technical features of this stone are investigated.A field survey of the main limestone outcrops allowed a lithostrati-graphic reconstruction of this formation to be drawn and the eight main lithotypes presently used as dimension stones to be recognized.Mineralogical and petrographical characterization was performed by means of X-ray powder diffraction and optical microscopy observation of thin sections (under transmitted, UV-reflected light and cold cathodoluminescence). Petrophysical characterization enabled to compare some engineering-geological properties and to evaluate the influences of rock fabric, chemical composition, fractures and stylolithes on the technical features of the stone. Ageing tests were also performed.Finally the main weathering phenomena affecting the stone were recognised through a detailed study on the facades of the bell tower of the Santa Chiara monastery in Naples.

    Description: Feldspar for ceramic/glass industries requires sufficiently low content of harmful colourants (Fe-, Ti-, Mn-bearing mineral phases). Hydrothermally altered albite-rich granites are increasingly used as feldspar raw material nowadays; however, they are often marked by increased content of colourants, which must be removed during the processing of feldspar ore. Parallel to the content of colourants, these phases show enrichment in some critical raw materials (CRMs), specifically of Nb, Ta, and Li. In the current study, the laboratory trials focused on the possibility of reprocessing of waste generated during basic magnetic separation of feldspar ore. Major aim of these trials was to search for a processing scheme that would allow for obtaining of mineralogically homogeneous fractions, part of which could be utilised as a source of CRMs. According to the results, combination of gravity, magnetic and heavy liquid separation is highly effective in obtaining of desirable concentrates. Feldspar ore processing waste thus presents potential source of CRMs; however, semi-industrial and full-scale trial must follow in order to prove the economic and environmental suitability of the suggested processing scheme.
