    A Model for Aquatic Invertebrate Response to Kissimmee River Restoration (1995)

    Notes: When the Kissimmee River was channelized in the 1960s and 1970s and placed under stage-fluctuation management, the dynamic interactions between the river and the flood-plain were essentially removed. Correspondingly, aquatic invertebrate life in the river and floodplain ecosystem shifted from a riverine to a more lacustrine fauna. A relinkage of the Kissimmee River with the floodplain following restoration will result in numerous changes to such ecologically important factors as streamflow, substrate composition, food quality and quantity, and water quality, all of which will influence invertebrate communities. These factors and their function in the ecosystem as the fauna shifts from predominantly lacustrine back to riverine are presented in a conceptual model. As an integral component of all aquatic ecosystems and a key link between primary producers and higher trophic levels, aquatic invertebrates are a valuable group with which to evaluate the recovery of the Kissimmee River. Utilization of a geographic information system mapping approach linking expected increased habitat heterogeneity and invertebrate richness with restoration efforts is suggested as an economical means of monitoring recovery of the Kissimmee River ecosystem.

    Notes: This paper demonstrates that, when the manager of a poorly performing firm generates firm-specific rents, strategic considerations associated with anticipated future restructuring may lead to the adoption of risky operating policies. Furthermore, this bias toward risky policies may be exacerbated by increases in managerial entrenchment. This is the case even when the manager does not have an ownership stake in the firm. On the other hand, a manager of a firm that is performing well will prefer safer policies. These results are driven by endogenously determined management-borne costs of financial distress, and obtain under both restructuring regimes that enforce the priority of creditor claims as well as restructuring regimes that induce deviations from absolute priority.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Ochromonas danica and O. malhamensis were grown in the presence of Na2S35O4. Four chloroform-soluble S35-compounds were separated from them, one of which was also found in the chloroform extract of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. All four S35-compounds were hydrolyzed by acid to yield S35-sulfate. Two of the S35-compounds were fed to O. danica and incorporated into the organism without reduction of the S35-sulfate. Evidence is presented suggesting a structural relationship between these chloroform-soluble S35-compounds.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. A sulfolipid, isolated from the phytoflagellate, Ochromonas danica, and from its medium, constitutes over 50% of the sulfur of the cells. It is bound to protein and excreted by the phytoflagellate. When the S35-labeled sulfolipid was placed in the medium it was incorporated by the cells without cleavage of the sulfate group. Thus it passes back and forth between the growth medium and the cells.The sulfolipid has been found in O. danica, O. malhamensis, Tetrahymena pyriformis, Chlamydomonas sp., Pseudomonas sp. (sea water bacterium). It was identified in the culture medium of O. danica, O. malhamensis, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, and Streptomyces griseus. Preliminary evidence was obtained for its presence in the growth medium of white clover and sorghum.

    Notes: A common theme in the literature on corporate control is that, when share ownership is diffuse, the free-rider problem prevents raiders from making acquisitions at tender prices below the postacquisition share price. In this paper, we address this question by formulating a nonstandard model of takeovers of diffusely held firms. It is demonstrated that, even when individual shareholdings are infinitesimal relative to firm size, takeovers succeed with positive probability and equilibria exist in which the raider earns substantial per share profits. Further, the Nash equilibria of the game are characterized with regard to raider profit, the aggregate fraction of shares tendered, and the relation between raider profit and the degree of randomization exhibited by shareholder tendering strategies.

    Notes: Polymeric films were coated with nisin, an antimicrobial peptide, for potential application in shelf-life extension of food. Five commercial packaging films with varying surface energies were compared. The highest antimicrobial activity was observed on the most hydrophobic nisin-coated films (surface energy ± 32 dyne/cm). The binding affinity of nisin to the surface of ethylene acrylic acid copolymer (surface energy = 32 dyne/cm) was investigated. Films were coated in nisin solutions under varying conditions including nisin concentration, contact time, solution's volume to film area ratio, pH of coating solution and temperature during coating. Stronger nisin activity was detected on films as the coating time increased from 30 s to 2 h. Higher nisin coating concentration also promoted the binding of nisin to films with saturation level observed at 250 μg/mL. Films coated with nisin using a higher solution to film area ratio (0.84 compared to 0.14 and 0.28 mL/cm2) also exhibited higher nisin activity.

    Notes: An in situ microcosm (ISM) consists of a stainless steel cylinder isolating about 2 L of the aquifer and is equipped with valves allowing for loading and sampling from the ground surface. During the last five years, this technique has been used frequently to study the degradation of organic chemicals in polluted and pristine aquifers representing different redox environments. The ISM technique has great potential for providing field-relevant degradation potentials and rate constants, but care must be taken in using the equipment and interpreting the results. This paper provides details concerning the installation and operation of an ISM and presents experiences concerning data interpretation and monitoring of redox conditions.

    Notes: Remediation of ground water pollution at old landfills with no engineered leachate collection system is a demanding and costly operation. It requires control of the landfill body, since the majority of the pollutants are still present in the landfilled waste for decades after the site has been closed. However removing the source is an attractive approach to managing leachate plumes. Natural attenuation has been implemented for petroleum hydrocarbon plumes and chorinated solvent plumes, primarily in the United States. Natural attenuation has not yet gained a foothold with respect to leachate plumes, however. Based on the experience gained from 10 years of research on two Danish landfills, it is suggested that natural attenuation is a feasible approach but is more complicated and demanding than in the case of petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvent.
