    Notes: . A new microsporidian parasite of the Artemia intestinal epithelium has been studied. The microsporidium developed within a membranous parasitophorous vesicle from the host rough endoplasmic reticulum consisting of two membranes, with the proximal one usually lacking ribosomes.All developmental stages had isolated nuclei. Unikaryotic meronts developed into merogonial plasmodia. Merogonial division occurred by binary fission and rosette-shaped fragmentation. In young sporonts, an electron-lucent space, corresponding to the developing endospore, was immediately observed between both the plasmalemma and the exospore primordium. Sporogonial division occurred also by rosette-shaped fragmentation, resulting in at least eight sporoblasts that developed directly into spores. Fresh spores were 1.7 × 0.9 μm in size and oval-shaped. The 8–11 coil isofilar polar filament was arranged in two rows. The polaroplast was bipartite. The nature of the parasitophorous envelope, host-parasite interaction, developmental cycle and taxonomy are discussed.

    Notes: The objectives of the present study were to measure the sensory profile and acceptability of 8 commercial samples of mayonnaise (4 whole fat and 4 low fat) and then to apply preference mapping to address the relationship between the descriptive and acceptability data. A total of 240 consumers were recruited in 3 Argentine cities. In each city 40 young adults and 40 older adults were recruited. Samples differed in their sensory profiles and average acceptabilities. Cluster analysis of consumers showed clear segmentation in appearance, texture, flavor and overall acceptance. Sensory acceptability segmentation was far more pronounced than age or city segmentation. Extended preference mapping showed the sensory descriptors of mayonnaise which drove the acceptability of some of the consumer clusters.

    Notes: Separation of strains of citrus tristeza virus (CTV), differentiated by their double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) profiles, was obtained by graft-inoculating citron plants from a Mexican lime that had been recently aphid- or graft-inoculated with a mild CTV isolate (T-385). Up to 24 sub-isolates with differing dsRNA profiles were obtained from the aphid-inoculated lime. Some of these sub-isolates induced stronger symptoms in several citrus species than the original T-385 isolate. One sub-isolate, T-385-33, was mild in Mexican lime, but induced stem pitting on sweet orange. Inoculation of this isolate on Mexican lime, sour orange and Eureka lemon induced mild or no symptoms when inoculum was taken from citron, but very severe symptoms when the inoculum was from sweet orange. Mexican lime and sweet orange plants co-inoculated with T-385-33 from sweet orange in combination with the other 23 sub-isolates showed mild symptoms. The results obtained suggest that there is natural cross-protection among sub-isolates in the original T-385 isolate.

    Notes: A survey for citrus tristeza virus (CTV) strains, based on double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) analysis, was carried out in five locations on the eastern citrus-growing area of Spain. CTV was recovered from 137 trees of different ages, citrus species and varieties, sampled in 53 orchards. The best months for dsRNA recovery were April, May, September, October, and November, and the highest dsRNA yield was obtained from sweet orange cultivars. Sixteen dsRNA profiles differing by the number and/or position of subgenomic bands were detected. One of these profiles was detected in more than half the trees analysed. Maximum diversity of dsRNA patterns was found in the location with the oldest citrus orchards and the highest CTV incidence (Alzira-Carcaixent). In many instances, several dsRNA profiles were detected in neighbouring trees of the same orchard, notably in Alzira-Carcaixent, where 70% of the plots sampled contained more than one profile. The possible causes for the diversity of CTV isolates found in this specific area are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract. Fry of Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Günther) weighing 160-175 mg were fed for 75 days on diets containing seven different levels of calcium pantothenate. Fish fed on the three lowest inclusion levels (up to 0,10 and 20 mg/kg) exhibited a variety of external signs and high mortalities. Fish fed on the higher inclusion levels (40, 60, 80, 120 and 320 mg/kg) did not show external pathologies. At the end of the experiment there was no significant difference in these diets (P〈0.01) in final weight, individual weight gain, individual food intake, food conversion ratio, and specific growth rate. Marked interlamellar lesions were observed in gills of fish fed on the lowest inclusion level diets. The lesions ranged from oedema, hyperplasia covering all the secondary lamellae to the complete fusion of adjacent filaments. These fish also developed necrosis of the pancreas, whilst fish fed diets up to 80 mg/kg showed marked glycogen deposition in the hepatic cells. For the first time it is reported that fish deficient in pantothenic acid showed ceroid deposition in the hepatic cells and spleen. Fish fed on diets containing 80-320 mg/kg did not show external or histological changes. It is thus recommended that the diet of C. urophthalmus fry must be supplemented with at least 80 mg/kg diet to give maximum growth and to avoid gross and histologicai signs of deficiency.

    Notes: Abstract. This paper describes the histopathological changes observed in the Mexican native cichlid Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Günther) when try with an initial weight of between 160 and 170 mg were fed with diets deficient in vitamin C for 90 days. The epidermis showed an extensive inflammatory response, with spongiosis and also degenerative changes in the basal cells. Muscle showed a range of pathological changes including inflammation, changes in the number and position of the nuclei, vacuolation and necrosis, granular degeneration, and fibre loss. Gills showed thickening of the primary lamellae, oedema, hyperplasia, telangiectasis and atrophy of the bony supporting structures. Ganglia and neurones of nervous tissue were abnormal with changes which ranged from slight inflammation to central chromatolysis. The hepalopanereas was also affected and focal necrosis of the hepatocytes was frequently observed. The pancreas showed major changes with shrinkage of the acinar cells and reduction of zymogen granule content. Fish fed diets containing 0 and 40 mg vitamin C kg-1 of diet were infected with Mycobacterium sp. and miliary tuberculosis was found affecting kidney, spleen, choroid gland, stomach, heart and muscle. The association between fish tuberculosis and vitamin C deficiency is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract From autolysed cultures of Mucor rouxii, two chitosanases, A and B, were purified to electrophoretic homogeneity. Apparent Mr values of 76 000 and 58 000 and pI values of 4.9 and 4.7 were determined for A and B, respectively. Both chitosanases showed a high specificity for chitosan and chitosan derivatives. They had optimum activities at pH 5.0 and at temperatures of 55°C and 50°C for A and B, respectively. Enzyme A was inhibited by acetate ions and enzyme B by high substrate concentration. Both enzymes showed an endo-splitting type of activity, and the end product of chitosan degradation contained a mixture of dimer, trimer and higher molecular mass oligomers of glucosamine. Glucosamine oligosaccharides were poorly hydrolysed by these enzymes. Both enzymes extensively degraded the chitosan extracted from M. rouxii cell walls.
