    Notes: When excised barley (Hodeum Vulgare L.) roots were aged, the rate of uptake of K and C1 increased raching a maximum in about 14 to 18 h. At its maximum the uptake rate was approxiamately twice that of the freshly excised root materila. Respiratory activity declined markedly during the aging period. Although excision was an essential requirement for uptake enhancement, washing was not. Both the uptake and aging processes were shown ot be unresponsive to the presence or absence of Ca in the tratment solutions. Because of cation exchange properties, the change in the total cation content of the root material was a more meaningful measure of the metabolically mediated cation uptake than was the change in content of the test cation itself. The pluggin of xylem vessels with protein and pectin-like substances was observed to increase with aging. It is proposed that the occlusion of the vessels may account for an apparent increaase in uptake since the obstruction could reduce a concurrent loss of ions through the cut ends of the root segments.

    Notes: Increasing concentrations of cyclopropane up to about 95 % C3H6—5 % O2 caused an increasing inhibition of uptake by excised barley roots from KC1 solution, much more so for Cl than K. No inhibition of K uptake from K2SO4 occurred under similar conditions. It is suggested that the small decrease in K uptake from KC1 is related to the large decrease in Cl uptake and that C3H6 primarily inhibits Cl uptake with little or no effect on K uptake. Time curves of uptake in 80 % C3H6 20 % O2 revealed no indication of cumulative injury in either KC1 or K2SO4 for periods up to 3 hours.The amount of organic acid production associated with K uptake from K2SO4 was about the same in 80 % C3Hg— 20 % O2 as in air. Oxygen consumption in K2SO4 was unaffected by the gas mixture and only slightly affected in KC1.Protoplasmic streaming in epidermal cells was rapidly stopped at C3H6 concentrations of 20 % or higher. In 80 % C3H6–20 % O2 the effect on streaming was confined mostly to the outer two or three layers of root cells. A connection between the cessation of streaming and the inhibition of Cl uptake appeared to exist but very little if any relationship between streaming and K uptake was observed.

    Notes: Barley roots contain a CO2 sensitive respiratory fraction which is inhibited in 50 per cent CO2 and is partially restored upon subsequent exposure to air. The residual O2 consumption occurring at CO2 concentrations between 50 per cent and 95 per cent amounts to about 40 per cent of the O2 uptake in air and can support K+ uptake for a limited time at a rate equal to or higher than occurs in air. Above 95 per cent CO2 both O2 and K+ uptakes decrease rapidly. 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), in the range of 10−6 to 10−5M, stimulates O2 uptake by the roots in air. The stimulation is absent when roots are treated with DNP in 80 per cent CO2, presumably because of the reduced demand for inorganic phosphate and phosphate acceptor at the lower respiratory level in high CO2. In either air or CO2, K+ uptake is strongly inhibited by DNP. A comparison of the respiratory and K+ uptake data indicates that O2 consumption is a necessary requirement for the uptake process in high CO2.Protoplasmic streaming in the root cells is rapidly stopped by high CO2 although K+ uptake and O2 consumption continue. The cation uptake mechanism in high CO2 appears to be limited to the stationary cytoplasm. It is also possible that a similar mechanism may be involved in cation uptake in air.

    Notes: Buds of heat and cold treated shoots were examined for their soluble and insoluble nitrogen, lipid-P, ester-P, RNA-P, DNA-P, phosphoprotein-P, inorgnnic-P. and total-P contents. Results indicated a direct relationship of bud growth with insoluble-N, ester-P and RNA-P concentrations. Decrease in phosphoprotein-P was found to be concomitant with increase in RNA-P.Various postulates have been considered in the light of the present results and those of others. A pathway of action in budrest break has been proposed which assumes that rest-breaking treatments cause liberation of DNA from a DNA-phosphoprotein-complex, which latter determines the resting slate. The freed DNA then acts as a template for RNA synthesis. This increased RNA synthesis coupled with increased ATP content (inferred from ester-P levels) induce protein synthesis (inferred from insoluble-N) and bud rest is broken.

    Notes: Duroc, Meishan, Fengjing and Minzhu boars were mated to White composite gilts. Trained sensory panel evaluation and Warner-Bratzler shear force determinations were made on chops that had been aged 4 days postmortem. No differences (P 〉 0.05) were found in juiciness, connective tissue amount, flavor intensity, tenderness or shear force values among sire breeds. No differences (P 〉 0.05) were detected in cooking losses, although meat from the Duroc-sired pigs cooked at a faster (P 〈 0.05) rate, but required longer cooking (P 〈 0.05) times than that from the other sire breeds. These data indicate the introduction of currently available Chinese genetics into the U.S. swine population would have little effect on the palatability of pork loin chops.

    Notes: Nutrient composition data of broiler tissues were statistically evaluated for any significant relationships between and among the four major components, moisture (M), protein (P), fat (F) and ash (A). The ratios of M/P, F/M, and P/F were generally characterized by broiler part. Estimations of fat and protein from moisture content were applicable within each part of each reported data set. Multiple correlation coefficients among P, F and M were high regardless of part or cooking status. The total of these three major components accounted for approximately 99% of the tissue weight with slight variations between laboratories. The results support the method for estimating of P by subtracting the F and M from 99% or other values established by each laboratory.
