    Notes: Two earthfill sections of Wallace Dam on the Oconee River near Eatonton, Georgia were constructed with vertical drainage filters (chimney drains) in a clay fill zone. In order to evaluate the performance of the filter in the west dike of Wallace Dam, the finite element Galerkin method was utilized in formulating a numerical model to study the steady-state saturated-unsaturated seepage characteristics through the earth dam. The resulting model is applied to Station 58+00 of the west dike of Wallace Dam. Numerical results for the four cases analyzed in this study describe the location of the zero pressure isobar and total hydraulic head values ranging from 425 feet (130 m) to 365 feet (111 m). Model results indicate a maximum seepage velocity of 2.62 feet per day (0.80 m/day) using a saturated horizontal hydraulic conductivity of 0.283 foot per day (8.64 cm/day). A maximum seepage rate is calculated to be 0.266 cubic foot per second (7.52 × 10−3 m3/sec). Analysis of the hydrostatic uplift forces along the base of the dam indicates an average pressure head reduction of 51 feet (16 m) from the upstream to the downstream side of the dam. Comparison of local seepage velocities to the critical seepage velocity upstream of the filter and inside the filter indicate a factor of safety against piping (a factor of safety against a quick condition arising in the soil) ranging from 0.3 to 3.7.

    Notes: The U.S. Geological Survey computer program TENSOR2D may be used to compute the directional components of the anisotropic transmissivity tensor of two-dimensional ground-water flow. In this note, modifications to the original computer code, developed in 1987, are described. Because of the modifications, TENSOR2D now conforms to the Fortran 77 Standard and can be run on most personal computers without user modification. Additionally, a new routine generates the polar coordinates of the computed theoretical transmissivity (or diffusivity) ellipse.

    Notes: Expression of the meningococcal transferrin receptor, detected by assay with human transferrin conjugated to peroxidase, was regulated by the level of iron in the medium. The transferrin receptor was identified by SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis, as a 71 000 molecular weight iron-regulated outer membrane protein in Neisseria meningitidis B16B6. Growth studies with iron-deficient cells and competition binding experiments demonstrated that the meningococcal receptor was species-specific for human transferrin. Reciprocal competitive binding experiments and limited proteolysis of intact cells indicated that the transferrin and lactoferrin receptors are distinct.

    Notes: Light stimulates the assimilation of nitrate and nitrite by two green algae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Ankistrodesmus braunii. Assimilation can be observed when the algae are illuminated in the absence of carbon dioxide under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The rates of assimilation by Chlorella do not depend on the presence of carbon dioxide, but Ankistrodesmus assimilates nitrate and nitrite more rapidly when cultures are illuminated in the presence of carbon dioxide than in its absence.The ratios of O2: NO3′ and O2: NO2′ vary from one experiment to the other and, with the exception of Chlorella cultures reducing nitrite they are higher than the ‘expected’ values of 2.0 and 1.5 respectively.Oxygen evolution accompanying nitrate and nitrite by algae illuminated in the absence of carbon dioxide is completely inhibited by DCMU at concentrations of 4 × 10-6 M. However, nitrite assimilation by both Ankistrodesmus and Chlorella and nitrate assimilation by Ankistrodesmus are less sensitive to the inhibitor.

    Notes: : Simulation of ground-water flow and fate of contaminants in the subsurface environment constitutes a major phase of most environmental assessment and site remediation studies. These simulation studies yield information on spatial and temporal distributions of contaminants in the subsurface media. An important use of this information is to conduct exposure assessment studies. Spatial and temporal distributions of both chemical concentrations and exposed populations render this integrated exposure analysis task rather difficult. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), on the other hand, provide a platform in which layered, spatially distributed databases can be manipulated with ease, thereby simplifying exposure analysis tasks significantly. In this paper, we describe procedures that combine the simulation models and demographic databases under a GIS platform to automate the exposure assessment phase of a typical health assessment study. Procedures developed herein significantly simplify the post-processing phase of the analysis, and render the overall task more ‘user friendly.’ A site-specific application is included as a demonstration of the proposed process.

    Notes: : Runoff and sediment production was measured under simulated and natural rain from 1×5 m plots established on a cutover and burned mixed pine-hardwood site in the Georgia Piedmont. Trees on the study site were cut and removed without mechanical disturbance. Slash was removed, kiln dried and replaced on the slope, and burned prior to plot installation. Three slopes, two rainfall intensities, three rainfall simulations representing three soil moisture conditions, and two replicate plots were used. The experiment was repeated four times during the period July 1989-July 1990 to investigate the effects of temporal changes in surface conditions and particularly root mat and residual forest floor decemposition. Runoff and sediment production from natural rainfall events was also measured from these plots during the period February-October 1990. Results of all measurements indicate that runoff and sediment production were generally low because of the protection afforded by the residual forest floor following burning. However, temporary hydrophobic conditions caused by a dry organic layer produced relatively high runoff rates and high sediment for the first few minutes of runoff for some of the simulated rainfall applications.
