Notes: SYNOPSIS. The eyespot of the zoospore of Tetracystis excentrica (a green alga) has been studied by light and electron microscopy. In Tetracystis the eyespot consists of about 110 osmiophilic granules which form a plate in the anterior third of the cell. The granules are about 80 Å in diameter and are found in the outermost portion of the chloroplast; they commonly show hexagonal close packing and a hexagonal shape. The granules are confined positionally by the chloroplast envelope and an inner thylakoid. The plasmalemma over the eyespot is thickened and is separated from the chloroplast envelope by a 50 mμ space. The eyespot of Tetracystis is compared with others reported in the literature and the possible functional significance of these studies is discussed. The possibility that the eyespot plate in Tetracystis serves as a shading device rather than the primary photoreceptor is considered.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Rabbit antisera to strains of different mating types of Chlamydomonas moewusii and to one strain of C. eugametos were tested against strains of C. reinhardti, C. eugametos, and C. moewussi, and against strains of 2 varieties and 6 mutant types of C. moewusii. Technics of double diffusion, absorption, and immunoelectrophoresis revealed marked serological differences between the sexually incompatible, distinct genetic species C. moewusii and C. reinhardti. Less distinct serological differences were resolved between C. moewusii and the so-called “species”C. eugametos, which is sexually compatible with the former, thus reconfirming the conspecificity between the 2 strains as suggested by Gowans. Marked serological differences were noted between C. moewusii and 2 of its varieties (C. moewusii var. tenuichloris and C. moewusii var. rotunda) which constitute 2 additional genetic species because of sexual incompatibility between themselves and with C. moewusii. Wild types and certain mutants of C. moewusii were compared serologically and could be distinguished on this basis. Strains of different mating types as well as certain mutant strains (e.g., paralyzed flagella, flagella-less, twins and monsters) could be differentiated serologically altho differences were often very subtle. Some antigens were common to organisms tested.

Notes: Exponentially dividing culture forms of Trypanosoma brucei did not utilize glucose provided in the culture medium. The inclusion of 2-deoxyglucose in the medium had no effect on the growth of the trypanosomes. Glucose could be replaced by proline in the liquid phase of biphasic medium without affecting the doubling time of the organisms. Proline added to the culture medium in this way disappeared during the log phase of growth. Glucose in the culture medium was used by the trypanosomes only when the stationary growth phase had been reached. Lipid accumulated in stationary phase trypanosomes grown in glucose-containing medium, but there was no lipid accumulation in log phase organisms or in those which had been grown in proline-containing medium. Bloodstream trypanosomes transferred to liquid medium rapidly utilized glucose over the first 12 hr of culture, and this was accompanied by an accumulation of free pyruvate in the medium. The rate of glucose utilization fell off over the next 36 hr; this was accompanied by a lowering of free pyruvate in the medium and a rise in the proline oxidase activity of the trypanosomes. The possible biologic significance of proline to trypanosomes developing in the midgut of the tsetse vector is discussed.

Notes: Formation of a hanging dam, a large, thick sub-surface accumulation of frazil ice that blocked river flow, altered physical environmental conditions dramatically and common carp Cyprinus carpio, and brown trout Salmo trutta, evacuated the pool in which the dam developed. A mean of 80·1% of the pool volume was filled with frazil ice. Mean and bottom water velocities in the pool increased from 6 to 27 cm s−1 and from 4 to 21 cm s−1, respectively, when the hanging dam formed, and water depth decreased from a mean of 2·25 to 0·45 m. Activity levels of fish leaving the pool varied. Two carp had higher swimming activities when in the over wintering pool, compared to the period when they were out of it, and a third showed opposite results.

Notes: : Storm-runoff quantity and quality were studied in three watersheds located near St. Paul in Ramsey County, Minnesota, from April 15 through September 15 of 1984, 1985, and 1986 to qualitatively determine the effects of precipitation and selected land uses on storm runoff. In respect to precipitation effects, differences in stormrunoff quantity between years in an urban watershed that lacks wetlands appear to be related to the average storm size (amount of precipitation) during the study period of each year. In contrast, the differences in storm-runoff quantity from watersheds that contain wetlands appear to be related to total precipitation during study period of each year. In respect to land use, the differences in storm-runoff quantity appear to be related to the amounts of impervious and wetland area. The watershed that contains the largest amount of impervious area and smallest amount of wetland area has the largest amount of storm runoff. Differences in storm-runoff quality appear to be related to the amounts of wetland and lake area. The watershed that contains the largest amounts of wetland and lake area has the smallest storm-runoff loading of suspended solids, phosphorus, and nitrogen. The wetland and lake areas likely retain the loading and, subsequently, lower the amount of storm-runoff loading exported from a watershed.
