    Notes: Pollen embryos were obtained from eight genotypes and viable green plants were regenerated from four genotypes in an anther-culture experiment with 165 genotypes of Phleum pratense L. Formation of proembryos inside the cultured anthers during the first 10—12 days was significantly influenced by genotypes and by the type of nutrient media. Primary embryos developed into multiple secondary embryos before regeneration of plants. Among a total of 62 plants regenerated, only 13 were albinos. Of the green regenerants, 11 were triploid while 35 were hexaploid when DNA-content was measured by flow cytometry. Eight plants with a triploid DNA-content did possess the triploid chromosome number of 21. Triploid and hexaploid regenerants from two different parents showed simplified isozyme (GPI and PGD) banding patterns relative to that of their parents.

    Notes: Volume calculations in various aspects of ground-water resources evaluation play a significant role. However, these calculations are made by different classical techniques, each of which employs the finite element concept. A common requirement in these techniques is the adaptation of a basic height—like contour interval. The accuracy of the estimated volume is influenced by the subjectivity on the part of the person doing the contouring on a specified contour interval. It is observed that there is a linear relationship between the contour interval and the estimated volume. The basic idea of this paper is to use a simple drawing procedure of a few points of different contour intervals versus the resulting volumes. A regression line is fitted through the scatter of these points. The best volume estimate corresponds to zero contour interval, i.e., the intercept of the straight line with the volume axis. This technique provides a common basis in that different researchers arrive at exactly the same conclusion for a given data set. The proposed method is verified by calculating the reservoir volume of a laboratory dam model with the known reservoir volume. It was found that the estimated volume was off by only 5% of the measured one. Further applications of the method are given for some observed data from the Floridan aquifer and a Black Hills dam reservoir.

    Notes: A total of 110 Staphylococcus aureus isolates were obtained from nasal carriers and wound infections of Jordanian population. The isolates were identified by cultural and biochemical methods. The nasal carrier rate of S. aureus among individuals was 22.7%. In comparison with the nasal S. aureus isolates the wound isolates did not produce significantly more virulence factors except DNase. Toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 production was higher among the S. aureus nasal isolates (40%) as compared with the wound isolates (26%) detected by an ELISA method which proved to be uniformly more sensitive than the immunodiffusion optimal sensitivity plate (OSP) method.

    Notes: A liquid coffee whitener was formulated using peanut milk as a substitute for sodium caseinate and water. Sensory quality of the formulation was evaluated using a descriptive panel. Six sensory attributes were significantly (p 〈 0.05) affected by the amounts of peanut milk, oil and corn syrup solids in the formulations. The maximum amount of peanut milk for an optimum formulation was 40%. The maximum fat content increased from 6% to 9% as peanut milk was decreased from 40% to 20%. A concentration of 2–9% corn syrup solids could be used with 20–40% peanut milk. Acceptable formulations within the optimum region contained 6% oil in combination with 40% peanut milk and 2% corn syrup solids or 20% peanut milk and 8% corn syrup solids.
