Notes: In situ estimates of advective and dispersive properties of ground-water flow systems are essential for the adequate prediction of solute flow. Field tracer tests provide the best estimates of these properties; however, this approach is often precluded by the expense and time involved. Various laboratory techniques have been developed to circumvent these problems and provide convenient estimates of hydraulic conductivity and dispersivity. Although these techniques are used extensively in hydrogeological investigations, very few attempts have been made to compare their estimates with field values.A detailed investigation was performed on an unconfined sand aquifer using a combination of routine laboratory techniques and an innovative field tracer test. The extensive data set provided a unique opportunity to compare field results with those obtained by a variety of laboratory techniques. The hydraulic conductivity results from two different methods of grain-size analysis (Hazen, 1893; and Masch and Denny, 1966) were observed to be quite well correlated, although their absolute values did not correspond with the hydraulic conductivities determined from the tracer test. However, contrary to previous studies, the results from grain-size analysis were the same order of magnitude as the in situ values. In addition, the two grain-size methods appear to provide upper and lower boundaries within which lie the hydraulic conductivity estimates determined from the tracer test. Thus, grain-size analysis of moderately to well sorted sands may provide reasonable and convenient approximations of hydraulic conductivities of the aquifer. No correlation was observed between field tracer test longitudinal dispersivity values and those determined from laboratory column tracer tests. The latter, however, differed by only an order of magnitude from the in situ point measurements, a difference which is considerably smaller than has been previously reported. This is largely attributed to the accuracy of the sampling methods used in the tracer tests.

Notes: Widespread evaporitic sulphate horizons occur in the frequently dolomitic Mercia Mudstones (Upper Triassic) of the English Midlands. The mudstones were deposited on an extensive peneplain which had areas of upstanding minor relief (Charnwood Massif, Derbyshire—Pennines, London Platform). Horst and graben structures formed during the early and middle Triassic, controlled late Triassic sedimentation rates and peneplain slope directions. A stable isotope study (S,C,O) of the sulphates and dolomites of the Trent Formation indicates that during the deposition of the lower Fauld Member grabens such as the Need wood Basin in Staffordshire and areas marginal to a graben such as Newark in Nottinghamshire had a marine brine regime with minor continental input. Using constraints applied by sulphate concentrations of modern waters in arid environments, the ratio of volume of marine input to volume of continental input lay between 3:1 and 4:1. The horst area (East Leake, Nottinghamshire) was strongly influenced by continental brines which derived sulphate from the exposed Carboniferous Hathern Anhydrite Series. A predominantly continental brine regime existed across the whole area during deposition of the overlying Hawton Member. Periodic marine influxes gave rise to thin sulphate horizons whilst continental run-off was occasionally sufficient to form temporary lakes. The Blue Anchor Formation (Rhaetian) was deposited in a lacustrine environment with waters of mixed marine and continental origin. Salinities were lower than those of the preceding Trent Formation brines.

Notes: Acinetobacter calcoaceticus RJE74 contains a large transmissible catabolic plasmid, pWW174, of about 200 kb, which encodes its ability to grow on benzene (Bzn+). pWW174 was unstable in Acinetobacter hosts and was lost at high frequency in the absence of selection for Bzn*. The catabolic pathway appeared to be via benzene cis-glycol, catechol and the β-ketoadipate (ortho) pathway. pWW174 encodes a catechol 1,2-oxygenase which is significantly more thermolabile than the chromosomally determined enzyme. pWW174 was able to complement all cat mutants (catechol to central metabolites) of A. calcoaceticus ADP1 (BD413) tested. Two regions of the plasmid were cloned, one carrying catA, the gene for catechol 1,2-oxygenase, and another carrying catBCDE, the subsequent four enzymes of the β-ketoadipate pathway: these two regions appeared to be separated by at least 10 kbp. Hybridization indicated homology between the plasmid cat genes and the corresponding chromosomal genes of ADPL.

Notes: The antibotulinal effectiveness of nisin in TPYG broth was increased somewhat by lowering the pH to pH 5.5. The ability of nisin to inhibit the outgrowth of strain 56A spores was markedly increase at pH 5.5 by comparison to its effectiveness at higher pHs observed in previous studies. The increased effectiveness of nisin at pH 5.5 was less notable for the strain 69A, 113B, and 213B spores. The nisin sensitivity of the type E spores was essentially unchanged from that observed in earlier studies at higher pHs. At pH 6, nisin levels of 5000 I.U./ml were insufficient to prevent spore outgrowth by C. botulinum in cooked meat medium. Comparatively, much lower levels of nisin were effective in preventing botulinal outgrowth in TPYG broth at pH 6. The decreased effectiveness of nisin in cooked meat medium may be due to the binding of nisin to meat particles, and this binding is apparently not affected by lowering the pH to pH 6.0.

Notes: The Tawe barrage was an early amenity barrage, and studies after its construction showed a deterioration in water quality within the impounded area. The main concern was the effect of low dissolved-oxygen concentrations upon the migrating salmonids during their passage upstream. An aeration/mixing system was chosen in a combination of diffusers and a propeller, which has proved to be capable of maintaining satisfactory water quality. However, additional diffusers need to be installed to (a) achieve a satisfactory concentration of dissolved oxygen at all points in the river and (b) complete the full scheme.

Notes: Latex isolated from laticifer cells of Euphorbia lathyris maintained its ability to synthesize triterpenols (and their esters) from acetate. When the latex was centrifugated at 5 000 g for 15 min. this biosynthetic activity could be subdivided into two separate fractions; the acetate to β-hydroxymethyl glutaryl-coenzyme A activity remained in the supernatant, while the β-hydroxymethyl glutaryl-coenzyme A to triterpenol activity was pelleted. Further purification of the pellet by isopycnic centrifugation on Percoll gradients yielded at least three particles: latex particles, starch grains, and a single membrane-bound organelle. Electron micrographs were made of all of these latex particles. The single membrane-bound organelle was only observed in the region of the density gradient that exhibited the ability to incorporate mevalonic acid into the triterpenoids. In addition, the enzyme β-hydroxymethyl glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (EC 1.1.1.34) was found in the 5000 g pellet, while β-hydroxymethyl glutaryl-coenzyme A lyase (EC 4.1.3.4) remained in the supernatant.

Notes: This paper presents the findings of research relating to the 1990 Hagersville (Ontario) tire fire. After reviewing the literature on risk and risk perception, it begins by describing the event as well as the community in which it occurred. The reasons for adopting a qualitative research design are then established practical, conceptual, and methodological. The residents' accounts of the fire, evacuation, and aftermath in terms of concerns, anxieties, and responses are described. Five themes emerge: economic, community, health, environmental, and governance. The paper concludes by putting forward a case study-derived model of risk appraisal and management, and by relating the findings to policy issues.
