Notizen: SYNOPSIS. Rabbit antisera to strains of different mating types of Chlamydomonas moewusii and to one strain of C. eugametos were tested against strains of C. reinhardti, C. eugametos, and C. moewussi, and against strains of 2 varieties and 6 mutant types of C. moewusii. Technics of double diffusion, absorption, and immunoelectrophoresis revealed marked serological differences between the sexually incompatible, distinct genetic species C. moewusii and C. reinhardti. Less distinct serological differences were resolved between C. moewusii and the so-called “species”C. eugametos, which is sexually compatible with the former, thus reconfirming the conspecificity between the 2 strains as suggested by Gowans. Marked serological differences were noted between C. moewusii and 2 of its varieties (C. moewusii var. tenuichloris and C. moewusii var. rotunda) which constitute 2 additional genetic species because of sexual incompatibility between themselves and with C. moewusii. Wild types and certain mutants of C. moewusii were compared serologically and could be distinguished on this basis. Strains of different mating types as well as certain mutant strains (e.g., paralyzed flagella, flagella-less, twins and monsters) could be differentiated serologically altho differences were often very subtle. Some antigens were common to organisms tested.

Notizen: The Cole-Cole relaxation model has been found to provide good fits to multifrequency IP data and is derivable mathematically from a reasonable, albeit greatly simplified, physical model of conduction in porous rocks. However, the Cole-Cole model is used to represent the mutual impedance due to inductive or electromagnetic coupling on an empirical basis: this use has not been similarly justified by derivation from any simple physical representation of, say, a half-space, layered or uniform.A uniform conductive half-space can be represented as a simple subsurface loop with particular resistive and inductive properties. Based upon this, a mathematical expression for the mutual impedance between the two pairs of electrodes of a dipole-dipole array is derived and designated “model I”. It is seen that a degenerate case of model I is the Cole-Cole model with frequency exponent c= 1. Model I is thus more general than the Cole-Cole expression and must provide at least as good a fit to a set of field data. Provision for variation of c from unity could be made in model I equally well as for the Cole-Cole model although, at present, this would be a purely empirical alteration.Model I contains four parameters, one of which is, in effect, the resistivity of the half-space. Therefore only three parameters are involved in the model I expressions for normalized amplitude and for phase of the EM-coupling mutual impedance. Model I is compared with previously published “standard” values for two different dipole separations. Under particular constraints, model I is shown to provide better fits than the Cole-Cole model (with c= 1) over particular frequency ranges, specifically at very low frequencies and at moderately high frequencies where the model I phase curve follows the standard phase curve across the axis to positive values (negative coupling).

Notizen: The seismic signatures of three reefs of the Upper Elk Point Subgroup (Givetian Stage) of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin are documented and analysed on the basis of variations in seismic image of particular lithologic units, lateral amplitude and/or phase changes, structural relief and velocity-generated relief, as rendered by the reflection data. The effects on seismic signatures of spatial geological variations resulting from such phenomena as differential compaction, reef-focused salt dissolution, palaeotopography, lateral and vertical facies variations, regional dip, and reservoir morphology are discussed. The usefulness of seismic data in clarifying relationships between reefs and their adjacent sedimentary sections, particularly in cases where well control is sparse, is also considered. Such documentation of seismic signatures from known reefs using geophysical and geological analysis can establish criteria to enable recognition of similar buildups elsewhere.Three example reefs are presented, each typical of a particular area and environment of W. Canada. The first is from the Winnipegosis Formation of SE Saskatchewan, the second and third from the Rainbow Member and Upper Keg River Reef Member, respectively, of the Keg River Formation of NW Alberta. All three of these carbonate buildups developed in the evaporitic Elk Point Basin. However, the degree of salt encasement and subsequent dissolution varied greatly, as do the resulting seismic effects. For these three reef types, the typical elements of their seismic signatures have been compiled and are here summarized.

Notizen: Seismic reflection methods are being developed at the University of Manitoba to aid in determining fine crustal structure in the Precambrian of Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. Present-day environmental concern as well as mineshaft conditions necessitate the detonation of several smaller charges repeated, say, I times and followed by ‘vertical’ stacking. To obtain the familiar √I improvement in signal-to-noise (S:N) amplitude ratio applying the straight-sum (SS) method, one assumes, among other things, that both S:N ratio and signal variance are the same on all traces. Dropping these assumptions, as we must for our data, it becomes necessary to apply weighting coefficients to optimize the S:N ratio of the stacked trace. We still assume the signal shapes to be the same for repeated shots, so for the jth trace on the record of the ith shot we model the time series as: tij=ai (sj+nij); where ai is a scaling factor. The proper weights wi are then shown to be proportional to σsi/σ2ni where σ2 is variance, or to γi/ai where γi is S:N power ratio.Applying the weighted-stack (WS) method gives S:N amplitude ratios which are, on average, 55% of the optimal ratios expected from WS theory compared with only 24% for the SS method. The 45% shortfall in WS performance is ascribed mainly to trace-alignment (or time-delay) errors. Varying noise levels on individual traces, slight dissimilarity of signal shape, and correlated noise may also contribute to a lesser extent (in decreasing order of significance). This WS method appears to strike a good practical balance between S:N improvement and processing efficiency.

Notizen: Predictions of where and how a fluid waste may travel from disposal site to the water table require detailed information on the physical characteristics, location, and extent of all pervious and impervious materials in the unsaturated zone. Principles concerning the flow system in the unsaturated zone indicate the importance of choice of disposal technique in predicting the time required for the fluid waste to traverse the distance to the water table. With appropriate data on the location, extent, and physical properties of water-bearing materials and on the boundaries of the saturated zone flow system, it is possible to analyze the relative merits of a variety of waste disposal techniques and to describe the probable consequences of each. Environments of consolidated rocks, such as granites, sandstones, and limestones, pose problems in addition to those related to unconsolidated or granular porous media in defining the fluid-flow regimes that involve joint patterns, fracture patterns, solutional openings, and the rock structure. The consequences of ground-water contamination can be just as damaging to water users as the pollution of surface streams. In fact it can be argued that the consequences are far more damaging because they persist over much longer periods of time after the contaminating source has been eliminated. It would appear prudent, therefore, to guard against contamination of the ground-water resource in the first instance, rather than to engage in long expensive rehabilitation measures after the damage has been done.In 1960 Graham Walton presented data concerning contamination, by sewage or other man-made wastes, of surface and underground waters. The circumstances attending the reported incidents of contamination, especially those involving ground-water supplies, have aided materially in the choice of a few principles and ideas that will identify the role of some significant hydrologic factors in the underground movement of fluid wastes.Walton's discussion of ground-water contamination refers often to physical settings into which fluid wastes are discharged at or near the land surface into cesspools, tile-drain fields, and holding ponds. Furthermore, most reported instances of ground-water contamination have taken place in relatively humid
