Notes: Seed dormancy in the grain legumes may interfere with germination in some situations, yet is not well described. Dormancy in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) was investigated to determine the mode of inheritance and whether the gene or genes controlling this trait are linked to other genes. Seeds produced by 235 recombinant inbred lines at the F6 generation were used for this study. The parents were the cultivar ‘Optica’ and 172, an Afghanistan landrace which possesses extended seed dormancy. Germination was scored on a seed sample from each recombinant inbred line. Segregation patterns indicated that the trait is monogenic. This gene, named doz, is linked to a gene controlling anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin synthesis, sp-b, with the genetic distance estimated to be about 25 cM. No associations were detected between seed dormancy and pod dehiscence, seed lustre or mean seed weight. The implications of the persistence of a gene for seed dormancy in the gene pool of V. faba for the introgression of traits from landraces and cultivars possessing dormancy and for the origins of domesticated V. faba are discussed.

Notes: This paper describes a survey which was undertaken to ascertain those features of house design and construction which were important to the survival of house in the ‘Ash Wednesday Bushfires’ of 16 February 1983. The Otway Ranges are of Victoria was chosen and 1153 house, with varying degrees of damage, were included in the survey. Results of a preliminary analysis of data collected are given, together with observations made concerning the so-called ‘exploding house’ phenomenon, the role of wind and the part that people played in house survival. Evidence for the ways that houses were ignited (i.e. by radiation, flame contact and wind-blown embers) was also gathered. The importance of these ignition modes is discussed and examples given. Preliminary observations on the rebuilding process are also given.

Notes: This paper describes in some detail the sources of data on fires occurring in Australia with to their scope and reliability. Particular reference is made to the data published by the Fire Brigades Board of New South Wales for these are the most detailed and comprehensive published in Australia although limited to one State. Data are given on the number of fires, property loss, and deaths and injuries due to fires in Australia and on causes, occupancies, points of origin and extents of fires in New South Wales. Comparisons are made with United Kingdom and United States of America statistics where relevant data are available. In conclusion, some trends which indicate that better data should be available in the future are discussed.
