Notes: Transfer of immunity to horse erythrocytes (HRBC) by immune lymphoid cells was performed to analyze the kinetics of adoptive immunity in the clonal ginbuna crucian carp, Carassius auratus langsdorfti. Immune lymphoid cells were intravascularly transferred to the unprimed recipients and then recipients were evaluated by measuring the antibody titre of the plasma. Antibody productivity was most successfully conferred by splenic cells, followed by pronephric and mesonephric cells, taken from immune donors 7 days post-immunization, while transferability by thymic cells was lacking or very low, even if possible. Peak response of plaque-forming cells (PFCs) was observed at 5–7 days after the first injection, and the maximum number of PFCs at peak response was almost the same in all organs examined, such as the pronephros, mesonephros, spleen and the thymus. Direct correlation between transferability and number of PFCs was not observed on individuals, although the peak of transferability corresponded to that of the PFC response. Preliminary experiments of cell transfer by separated pronephric cells showed that the lymphocyte-rich fraction was more effective than the bottom fraction containing fewer lymphocytes in transferring immune reactivity. These results suggest that cells involved in transferring immune reactivity are B lymphocytes, composed of different developmental stages and distributed differently in the different lymphoid organs.

Notes: Histocompatibility analyses in goldfish were performed using the tetraploid goldfish-crucian carp hybrid and the first generation of gynogenetic diploid (GD1) goldfish. Tetraploids were obtained by crossing clonal triploid crucian carp with goldfish. GD1 goldfish were produced by the suppression of the second meiotic division. Tetraploid scale grafts on triploid clone members evoked an acute rejection in 4–6 days, whereas the reverse transplants were accepted or rejected chronically. Reciprocal grafting between tetraploids showed subacute rejection in 10–12 days, although some fish showed chronic rejection in 20–30 days. On the other hand, scale grafts reciprocally exchanged among triploids were intact even 3 months after grafting, although some of them showed a unidirectional rejection pattern. Furthermore, allograft rejection among gynogens occurred between 5 and 20 days, whereas all the scale allografts between members of control siblings were rejected within 9 days. In addition, neither accelerated acute rejection nor acceptance of allografts was observed in grafts exchanged among GD1 goldfish. These results suggest that single doses of histocompatibility alleles are effective in eliciting acute rejection, and each of the fourth haploid set of chromosomes originating from paternal goldfish might share the same histocompatibility antigens to a large extent. This experiment also indicates that the genecentromere recombination rate is quite high with respect to the histocompatibility loci in this species.

Notes: Abstract Peptide YY (PYY) is thought to possess paracrine and endocrine functions. The highest concentrations of this peptide are in the colonic mucosa. The effect of PYY on electrolyte and water transport in the rat colon was studied in vivo. Under urethane anesthesia, rat colonic loops were perfused at a constant rate with physiological buffer solution containing phenol red as a nonabsorbable volume marker, and net movements of water, sodium, chloride and potassium in the perfused colon were determined every 10 min. Intravenous administration of PYY produced a dose-dependent increase in the net absorption of sodium chloride and water, as well as a decrease in the net secretion of potassium. PYY inhibited the reduction in net absorption of sodium chloride and water evoked by vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), but did not affect the VIP-evoked increase in net potassium secretion. These findings suggest that PYY acts as an enhancer of sodium chloride and water absorption and as an antagonist to VIP-induced secretion in the colon.

Notes: Abstract: The spectral decomposition of the path space of the vertex model associated to the vector representation of the quantized affine algebra is studied. We give a one-to-one correspondence between the spin configurations and the semistandard tableaux of skew Young diagrams. As a result we obtain a formula of the characters for the degeneracy of the spectrum in terms of skew Schur functions. We conjecture that our result describes the -module contents of the Yangian -module structures of the level 1 integrable modules of the affine Lie algebra . An analogous result is obtained also for a vertex model associated to the quantized twisted affine algebra , where characters appear for the degeneracy of the spectrum. The relations to the spectrum of the Haldane-Shastry and the Polychronakos models are also discussed.

Notes: Summary Recent studies regarding developmental changes in the myocardial contractile system from fetal, newborn, and adult animals are reviewed. From the data obtained so far, we conclude that in the early fetus myocardial contraction is mainly dependent on Ca which enters via the sarcolemma. Ca release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum is minimal. The role of the sarcoplasmic reticulum as a source of contractile Ca increases and the role of Ca influx across the sarcolemma in contractile system decreases with development.

Notes: Summary During screening of animal metabolites which induce drought resistance in plants, two diketopiperazines, cyclo(L-Hyp-L-Pro) (1) and cyclo(L-Hyp-L-Leu) (2), emerged as effective. When rice seeds were pretreated with the cyclic dipeptides (1 and2) during their germination period, the resulting seedlings showed significant resistance to water-stress caused by 0.5–1.5% NaCl solution or 2.5–5.0% mannitol solution.

Notes: Summary Comparative studies on self-pollination after the application of high concentrations of CO2 gas, which is known to overcome the self-incompatibility reaction in Cruciferous species, have revealed significant changes in the pollen tubes of germinating grains prior to their penetration into the papilla cells. A remarkable increase in the width of the pollen tube was induced by treating the stigmatic papillae with high CO2 concentrations. The width of the pollen tube appeared to be greatest with CO2 concentrations ranging from 3% to 5%; these concentrations were also optimal for tube penetration. Callose accumulation was extensively induced in the stigmatic papilla with 10%–20% of CO2, although a typical callosic reaction remained through the ranges appropriate for blocking self-incompatibility. Observations using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) after pollination revealed that compatible pollen tubes in cross-pollinations fused completely to the papular surface during tube penetration, while in self-pollination, pollen tubes remained on the papilla with some additional diffusate. In the case of CO2 treatment for self-pollination, some pollen tubes behaved very similarly to the incompatible or compatible ones already described, while others were different from both of them: they showed a complete fusion, similar to compatible ones, with additional diffusate, similar to incompatible ones. These responses of the pollen and stigma to high CO2 concentrations are discussed with respect to their effect upon the expression of self-incompatibility.

Notes: Summary The stylar transmitting tissue in the mature pistil of the Japanese pear consists of its component cells and intercellular heterogeneous secretions. The cytoplasm of the periplasmic region contains two different organelles that are characteristic of floral bud development. One of these is the vesicle, which is derived from rough ER and transferred to the periplasmic region of the cell during an early stage of the floral bud. The other one is the lipid droplet, which reacts to polysaccharidic staining and is seen throughout floral bud development. The lipid droplets are closely associated with the Golgi bodies and seem to be dissolved in the vacuole. The materials found in the vacuoles appear to diffuse and pass through the cell walls as intercellular substances.

Notes: Summary Glow discharge polymerizations of tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoromethylcyclohexane and perfluorotoluene were investigated by infrared spectroscopy and ESCA to clarify the contribution of olefinic double bonds and cyclic structures. The products formed from the three compounds were deposited as filmy polymers containing large amount of fluorine. Their polymeric chains are composed of CF, CF-CFn, CF2 and CF3 groups and have less dependency on chemical structures of the starting compounds. The polymer-forming process involves not only chain reactions via addition reaction to double bonds and via ringopening reaction but also the rupture of C-F bonds and the rearrangement of the ruptured fluorine atoms.

Notes: Abstract Plutonium 239,240 was measured using large-volume water samples from the North Pacific and its adjacent seas. The vertical profiles of239,240Pu show features that are similar to those reported in earlier papers with a subsurface maxima of around 660 m and a significant concentration increase in the North Pacific bottom waters. It became evident that the239,240Pu concentration in deep bottom water is proportional to the inventory of the nuclides in the overlying water column and that the appearent distribution ratios of the nuclides between deep-sea sediment and bottom water lie in a relatively narrow range of about 2×104 to 105, independent of sea area and warter depth. The latter implies that239,240Pu may follow a reversible-type partition process at a deep water/sediment interface. In order to substantiate this assumption, it is desirable to study the phenomenon for Pu as well as for other long-lived radionuclides, both artificial and natural. From this point of view, an analytical procedure for the successive determination of selected long-lived radionuclides was studied.
