Notes: An electrochemical treatment system consisting of a pulsed electrical power supply and an electrical treatment chamber was designed and evaluated for inactivation Listeria monocytogenes in recirculated brine for chilling processed bacons. The brine was tested under different currents and temperatures. An average D-value of 1.61 min in the storage tank could be achieved at 7 mA/cm3 current with the fresh brine (t = 0 h). For the spent brine (t = 20 h), the D-value was 2.5 min in the treatment chamber at 35 mA/cm3. The average D-values in the treatment chamber were approximately 2.5 min at all three temperatures (4, 0, -8 8C) at 35 mA/cm3.

Notes: Abstract A polarimetric fibre laser sensor with narrow polarization mode beat frequency bandwidth is demonstrated using a polarization-maintaining Er-doped fibre. The slope coefficients of 124kHz°C-1 cm-1 and 137kHz μm-1 are obtained for temperature change and longitudinal strain measurements, respectively. A new configuration of polarimetric fibre laser sensor is also demonstrated using a conventional Er-doped fibre as a gain medium and a short length of polarization-maintaining fibre as a sensing part.

Notes: Abstract The linear electrooptic (EO) effect of poled polymer thin film is measured in the coplanar-electrode structure. The optical geometry of the coplanar-electrode thin-film setup is analysed theoretically to find a relationship between the linear optical parameters and the EO modulation intensity. EO modulated intensity is measured as a function of the direction of incident light polarization relative to the macroscopic optic axis, also as a function of optical bias determined by quarter-wave plate. Comparison of experimental measurements with the theoretical analysis shows good agreement.

Notes: Abstract The Al-12Si-5Fe-3Cu-1Mg(wt%) alloy was rapidly solidified by centrifugal atomization. The microstructural characteristics of rapidly solidified powder and the microstructure changes with heat treatment were investigated in terms and related to powder size. The microstructures of the powder consisted of dendritic α-Al, eutectic phase, Cu-rich phase, and needle-like intermetallic compounds. These phases were much finer than that of ingot cast structure and the size decreased with increasing cooling rate. The X-ray diffraction of the atomized powders revealed the presence of non-equilibrium 3-(AlFeSi) intermetallic phase. This phase appeared to transform to an equilibrium β-(AlFeSi) phase by heating at temperatures above 470°C. The extruded rod which was hot extruded at 360°C with an extrusion ratio of 40:1 also revealed the presence of the β-(AIFeSi) intermetallic phase. Using DSC, the exothermic peak due to precipitation from the supersaturated α-Al matrix was observed in the range of 200–250°C during continuous heating of atomized powder, and the size of the peaks increased with decreasing powder size.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure and mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Al–18 wt% Si and Al–18 wt% Si–5 wt% Fe alloys were investigated by a combination of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, tensile testing, and wear testing. The centrifugally atomized binary alloy powder consisted of the α-Al (slightly supersaturated with Si) and Si phases and the ternary alloy powder consisted of the α-Al (slightly supersaturated with Si), silicon, and needle-like metastable Al–Fe–Si intermetallic phases. During extrusion the metastable δ-Al4FeSi2 phase in the as-solidified ternary alloy transformed to the equilibrium β-Al5FeSi phase. The tensile strength of both the binary and the ternary alloys decreased with a high-temperature exposure, but a significant fraction of the strength was retained up to 573 K. The specific wear gradually increased with increasing sliding speed but decreased with the addition of 5 wt% Fe to the Al–18 wt% Si alloy. The wear resistance improved with annealing due to coarsening of the silicon particles.

Notes: Abstract Palladium films, 45 nm thick, evaporated on to Si(111) were irradiated to various doses with 78 keV Ar+ ions to promote silicide formation. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) shows that intermixing has occurred across the Pd/Si interface at room temperature. The mixing behaviour is increased with dose which coincides well with the theoretical model of cascade mixing. The absence of deep RBS tails for palladium and the small area of this for silicon spectra indicate that short-range mixing occurs. From the calculated damage profiles computed with TRIM code, the dominant diffusion species is found to be silicon atoms in the Pd/Si system. It is also found that the initial compound formed by Ar+ irradiation is Pd2Si which increases with dose. At a dose of 1×1016 Ar+ cm−2, a 48 nm thickness of Pd2Si was formed by ion-beam mixing at room temperature.

Notes: Abstract Evaporated palladium films of 45 nm thickness on Si(1 1 1) were irradiated using 78 keV Ar+ ions with doses in the range of 1×1015 to 1.5×1016 cm−2 for the purpose of studying silicide formation. Rutherford backscattering analysis shows that intermixing has occurred across the Pd-Si interface at room temperature. The mixing behaviour increases with increasing dose of the bombarding ions, which agrees well with a theoretical model of isotropic cascade mixing for palladium, and radiation-enhanced diffusion associated with an interstitial mechanism for silicon.
