    Notes: Contrasting effects of soil CO2 concentration on root respiration rates during short-term CO2 exposure, and on plant growth during long-term CO2 exposure, have been reported. Here we examine the effects of both short- and long-term exposure to soil CO2 on the root respiration of intact plants and on plant growth for bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and citrus (Citrus volkameriana Tan. & Pasq.). For rapidly growing bean plants, the growth and maintenance components of root respiration were separated to determine whether they differ in sensitivity to soil CO2. Respiration rates of citrus roots were unaffected by the CO2 concentration used during the respiration measurements (200 and 2000 μmol mol−1), regardless of the soil CO2, concentration during the previous month (600 and 20 000 μmol mol−1). Bean plants were grown with their roots exposed to either a natural CO2 diffusion gradient, or to an artificially maintained CO2 concentration of 600 or 20 000 μmol mol−1. These treatments had no effect on shoot and root growth. Growth respiration and maintenance respiration of bean roots were also unaffected by CO2 pretreatment and the CO2 concentration used during the respiration measurements (200–2000 μmol mol−1). We conclude that soil CO2 concentrations in the range likely to be encountered in natural soils do not affect root respiration in citrus or bean.

    Notes: The growth patterns of plants subjected to phosphorus starvation resemble those caused by treatment with ABA, suggesting that ABA could mediate the response of the plant to phosphorus starvation. We examined the role of ABA in phosphorus stress by comparing growth and biochemical responses of Arabidopsis thaliana ABA mutants aba-1 and abi2-1 to those of wild-type plants. We first characterized acid phosphatase production of wild-type Arabidopsis in response to phosphorus starvation. We found that several acid phosphatase isozymes are present in roots and shoots, but only a subset of these isozymes are induced by phosphorus stress, and they are induced in both organs. Production of acid phosphatase in response to phosphorus stress was not affected by the aba-1 or abi2-1 mutations. Low phosphorus also resulted in decreased growth of both wild-type and ABA mutant plants, and the root-to-shoot ratio was increased in both wild type and mutants. Anthocyanins accumulated in response to phosphorus stress in both wild-type and mutant plants, but the increase was reduced in the aba-1 mutant. Thus, two different ABA mutants responded normally in most respects to phosphorus stress. Our data do not support a major role for ABA in coordinating the phosphorus-stress response.

    Notes: The involvement of ethylene in root architectural responses to phosphorus availability was investigated in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants grown with sufficient and deficient phosphorus. Although phosphorus deficiency reduced root mass and lateral root number, main root length was unchanged by phosphorus treatment. This resulted in decreased lateral root density in phosphorus-deficient plants. The possible involvement of ethylene in growth responses to phosphorus deficiency was investigated by inhibiting endogenous ethylene production with amino-ethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and aerating the root system with various concentrations of ethylene. Phosphorus deficiency doubled the root-to-shoot ratio, an effect which was suppressed by AVG and partially restored by exogenous ethylene. AVG increased lateral root density in phosphorus- deficient plants but reduced it in phosphorus-sufficient plants. These responses could be reversed by exogenous ethylene, suggesting ethylene involvement in the regulation of main root extension and lateral root spacing. Phosphorus-deficient roots produced twice as much ethylene per g dry matter as phosphorus-sufficient roots. Enhanced ethylene production and altered ethylene sensitivity in phosphorus-deficient plants may be responsible for root responses to phosphorus deficiency.

    Notes: Abstract. Maintenance of realistically low solution P concentrations under controlled conditions is a major difficulty in studies of P nutrition. In this report, we describe a relatively simple and economical sand culture system capable of sustaining plant growth to maturity under controlled yet realistic P regimes. The system uses Al2O3 as a solid-phase P buffer, and modern process control technology to control irrigation and addition of other mineral nutrients. Aspects of the design, use and potential applications of automated solid-phase systems are discussed. The system was used to grow Phaseolus vulgaris to matarity at 0.4 mmol m3, 1.0 mmol m3 and 27 mmol m3 P with and without mycorrhizal inoculation. At flowering, low solution P concentrations were associated with reduced leaf concentrations of P in nonmycorrhizal plants, and reduced leaf concentrations of Ca in both mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal inoculation increased leaf P, K, Mg and Mn concentrations, but reduced leaf N concentration. Low P regimes reduced final seed yield by diminishing both the number of pods per plant and the number of seeds per pod. Mycorrhizal inoculation significantly enhanced seed yield under low P regimes by increasing seed weight, the number of pods per plant, and the number of seeds per pod.

    Notes: Abstract A range of aliphatic, aromatic and amino acids at a concentration of 5 mol m-3 inhibited the extension of roots of barley seedlings. Acetic acid is one of the least toxic but its action has the greatest ecological significance because it can be formed in phytotoxic concentrations by micro-organisms in soil. Its uptake and toxicity were greatest at low pH. Of the plant species which were examined, those most affected were barley, wheat and maize, followed by rape and clover. In aerobic conditions, microbial breakdown of the acid decreased its activity, but in atmospheres containing small concentrations of oxygen the acid prevented the germination of seeds. The toxicity could be partially alleviated by calcium carbonate applied as ground chalk to seeds.

    Notes: Low phosphorus availability stimulates root hair elongation in many plants, which may have adaptive significance in soil phosphorus acquisition. We investigated the effect of low phosphorus on the elongation of Arabidopsis thaliana root hairs. Arabidopsis thaliana plants were grown in plant culture containing high (1000 mmol m−3) or low (1 mmol m−3) phosphorus concentrations, and root hair elongation was analysed by image analysis. After 15d of growth, low-phosphorus plants developed root hairs averaging 0.9 mm in length while high-phosphorus plants of the same age developed root hairs averaging 0.3 mm in length. Increased root hair length in low-phosphorus plants was a result of both increased growth duration and increased growth rate. Root hair length decreased logarithmically in response to increasing phosphorus concentration. Local changes in phosphorus availability influenced root hair growth regardless of the phosphorus status of the plant. Low phosphorus stimulated root hair elongation in the hairless axr2 mutant, exogenously applied IAA stimulated root hair elongation in wild-type high-phosphorus plants and the auxin antagonist CM PA inhibited root hair elongation in low-phosphorus plants. These results indicate that auxin may be involved in the low-phosphorus response in root hairs.

    Notes: When grown in mixtures with equal numbers of wheat plants Satvia reflexa was found not to be a strong competitor. The height and inflorescence dry weight of wheat was increased by watering the mixtures from above ihe foliage. These effects were accentuated by moisture stress. Aqueous leachatcs oi S. refiexa foliage were found (o inhibit the germination and/or early growth of wheat grown on filter paper in petri dishes and in different soil lypes.
