Notes: This paper reviews the design and performance experience with sludge-drying reed-beds over the past fourteen years. Whilst there are very few of these systems in the UK, there is much experience in Europe and particularly in Denmark. The Danish experience is reviewed in some detail. The design of and experience gained from two UK systems is described. The final dry-solids concentration depends upon the concentration in the initial sludge dose. It is possible, when treating anaerobically digested sludges containing 3–4% DS, to achieve about 90% volume reduction and a final dry-solids content of up to 40%. With thinner activated sludges containing 0.3–0.6% DS, a reduction (in volume) of greater than 97% is possible with a final solids concentration in the range 10–20%.

Description: Contrasting Greenland and Antarctic temperatures during the last glacial period (115,000 to 11,650 years ago) are thought to have been driven by imbalances in the rates of formation of North Atlantic and Antarctic Deep Water (the ‘bipolar seesaw’). Here we exploit a bidecadally resolved 14C data set obtained from New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis) to undertake high-precision alignment of key climate data sets spanning iceberg-rafted debris event Heinrich 3 and Greenland Interstadial (GI) 5.1 in the North Atlantic (~30,400 to 28,400 years ago). We observe no divergence between the kauri and Atlantic marine sediment 14C data sets, implying limited changes in deep water formation. However, a Southern Ocean (Atlantic-sector) iceberg rafted debris event appears to have occurred synchronously with GI-5.1 warming and decreased precipitation over the western equatorial Pacific and Atlantic. An ensemble of transient meltwater simulations shows that Antarctic-sourced salinity anomalies can generate climate changes that are propagated globally via an atmospheric Rossby wave train.

Notes: Some aspects of the XYZBLC suite of programs for aerial triangulation are described. The Ordnance Survey Bute block of photography at a scale of 1: 24000 is computed by independent models using XYZBLC. Three of the strips in the block are treated as a test block and are computed with different configurations of control. Conclusions are drawn with regard to the usefulness of height control doublets and other dense control configurations.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Résumé Quelques aspects de l'ensemble XYZBLC de logiciels d'aérotriangulation sont décrits.

Notes: Inner constraints, generalised matrix inverses and S-transformations are described in relation to least squares estimation of spatial positions. A simple example is used to illustrate some of the theory. The various roles and properties of covariance functions and matrices are presented with a discussion of their practical determination and use in least squares interpolation and collocation.

Notes: This paper was prepared as supporting documentation for a tutorial given by the authors under Photogrammetric Society auspices. The authors do not make any claims of novelty or innovation but they feel that the information contained in the paper will provide useful study material, especially for practitioners of photogrammetry and surveying. The following topics are covered: functional and stochastic models; the least squares process; statistical testing; optimal design methods; and numerical examples in the design of a horizontal control network and of a close range photogrammetric survey.

Notes: The major manifestations of amoeboid locomotion in Naegleria—cytoplasmic streaming, pseudopod production, cell polarity and focal contact production—require that the actin-based cytoskeleton be extremely dynamic. Whether these features are causally linked is unclear. In an attempt to answer this question we have used the fungal product cytochalasin B (cyt B) to dissect the motility process. This drug can perturb the organisation of actin filaments both in vivo and in vitro. Essentially cyt B acts as a molecule which can cap the barbed ends of actin filaments. Not surprisingly therefore cyt B has an effect on rates of actin polymerization and the dynamic state of actin in the cytoplasm. We have found that cyt B has a profound effect on focal contact production and breakdown. Within minutes of addition of cyt B focal contact production ceases, existing focal contacts are stabilised but cytoplasmic streaming and pseudopod production are not blocked. In conclusion it is now clear that the state of actin required for focal contact production is different from that required for pseudopod extension and cytoplasmic streaming.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Strains of 3 unnamed mating groups of the Tetrahymena pyriformis complex have been subjected to starch gel electrophoresis followed by staining the gels for the enzymes isocitrate dehydrogenase (NADP), tyrosine aminotransferase, and tetrazolium oxidase (superoxide dismutase). With respect to the electrophoretic mobilities of these enzyme systems, the mating groups referred to here as 5, 13 and 14 are very similar to Tetrahymena americanis (syngen 2), the most common North American species of the complex.Cultures in our collection labeled Tetrahymena cosmopolitans (formerly syngen 4) are either amicronucleate, with unique isozyme patterns, or micronucleate cells which mate with and have isozyme patterns similar to Tetrahymena canadensis (syngen 7). Immature progeny have been derived from crosses between the latter strains and T. canadensis recently collected in Colorado. The amicronucleate strains are now placed in the Tetrahymena sp. category, and we conclude that strains identifiable as T. cosmopolitanis are no longer available. The reliability of isozymes as characters in ciliate taxonomy was evaluated by comparing the present results for 3 enzymes in 15 groups of strains (syngens and phenosets) that had been compared in an earlier study. These enzyme systems gave correlation coefficients (r) of 0.75 or higher in the separate studies, and can be considered useful diagnostic traits. Other enzymes that were present at threshold levels of detectability or varied highly in concentration from species to species are too unreliable to be of diagnostic value. Some of the strains in the complex are so evolutionarily divergent at the molecular level that we have difficulty finding growth and electrophoretic conditions under which orthologous enzyme activities can be detected simultaneously for all the strains being compared.
