Notes: Abstract Sodium-containing intercalates having as general formula Na x VOPOP4·(2−x)H2O (0.25≤x〈0.50) have been obtained and characterized. Orthorhombic phases, which essentially maintain the structure of the layered oxide hydrate VOPO4·2H2O result. Intercalated sodium ions act as ‘pillars’. The presence of H3O+ ions in the parent VOPO4·2H2O and also in some reduced phases, is detected. The understanding of the structural role of the water molecules is advanced and the topotactic dehydration/rehydration processes are studied. The formation of a new metastable VOPO4·H2O phase is established.

Notes: Summary By inhibiting the copper(II) assisted TPT (TPT = 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine) hydrolysis, monomeric and dimeric copper(II) complexes having as general formulae Cu(TPT)X, · nH2O (X = Cl, Br, NCS, NCO or N3) and [Cu(TPT)X]2(PF6)2 · nH2O (X = Cl, Br, NCS or N3) have been synthesized and characterized by i.r., electronic and e.p.r. spectra, x-ray powder diffraction and analytical data. Spectroscopic results indicate five-coordinate geometry around the copper(II) ion, intermediate between trigonal-bipyramid and square-pyramid structures. The half-field absorption in the ΔMS = 2 region of powdered X-band e.p.r. spectra has been observed for the dimeric species.

Notes: Summary Dimeric and polymeric copper(II) complexes containing BPCA (N-2-pyridinylcarbonyl-2-pyridinecarboximidate), having general formulae Cu(BPCA)X·nH2O (X=Cl, Br, NCS, NCO, N3, or CN) and Cu2(BPCA)2-X·nH2O [X=oxalate anion (OX), chloranilate anion (CA) or the dianion of 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DHBQ)] have been synthesized by the copper(II)-assisted hydrolysis of 2, 4, 6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1, 3, 5-triazine. Spectroscopic results indicate five-coordinate, approximately square-pyramidal, geometry around the copper(II) ion. Half-field absorption in the ΔM s=±2 region of the X-band e.p.r. powder spectra has been observed for the dimeric species.

Description: How predictable are life trajectories? We investigated this question with a scientific mass collaboration using the common task method; 160 teams built predictive models for six life outcomes using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a high-quality birth cohort study. Despite using a rich dataset and applying machine-learning methods optimized for prediction, the best predictions were not very accurate and were only slightly better than those from a simple benchmark model. Within each outcome, prediction error was strongly associated with the family being predicted and weakly associated with the technique used to generate the prediction. Overall, these results suggest practical limits to the predictability of life outcomes in some settings and illustrate the value of mass collaborations in the social sciences.

Der Einfluss des Messfehiers auf den Höhenfehler wird ebenfalls abgeschätzt.

Notes: Protozoa are now being recognized as important members of planktonic food webs. This is due to the inclusion of microbial links in our paradigm of trophic relationships. Heterotrophic microflagellates and ciliates are major grazers of bacteria. They can stimulate production through nutrient recycling and can transform microbial production into larger particles, which are then available for macroconsumers. In this paper we add new groups, the small (〈 20 μm) ciliates and myxotrophic flagellates, to the planktonic food web.

Notes: Stomatogenesis in Paramecium aurelia is shown to involve the lower kineties of the right vestibular wall, the endoral membrane and perhaps the quadrulus. The anarchic field for the new buccal organelles is formed by granules produced from somatic kinetosomes of the right vestibular wall. The endoral membrane becomes incorporated into the buccal anlage and probably regulates orientation and development of the new organelles. A production of heretofore unobserved buccal kinetosomes from the quadrulus is described and it is suggested that these may form the new endoral membrane for the proter.During conjugation the infraciliature dedifferentiates in the area of fusion between the conjugants. The buccal organelles dedifferentiate at the time of pronucleus formation and transfer. It is suggested that dedifferentiation of structures in the fusion area is caused by a partial solation of the cortex in this area. The dedifferentiation of the buccal organelles results from the solation of the cytoplasm and the cortex of the paroral cone during pronucleus migration. The redifferentiation of the buccal organelles and somatic kinetosomes is suggested to be a recrystallization or gelation of the cortex with the structures re-forming in their normal positions and not from an anarchic field as at fission.

Notes: After an introduction setting out the general state of work on the national accounts in the Middle East the author considers the principal uses of national accounts statistics in less developed countries. The first group of uses discussed is in connexion with the measurement of growth and the making of international comparisons. The author is of the opinion that in many cases the primary statistical series are so weak that the fact they they are combined together into a series called national income or gross domestic product lends to them a significance which they do not really possess. The real problem is to improve the quality of the primary series.A second use of national accounts statistics is in connexion with fiscal and budgetary policy. In the statistically advanced countries this is one of the most important uses but in the less developed countries budgetary policy has not yet reached a level of sophistication which would call for the use of national accounts data. Moreover, the time factor involved in assembling accurate national accounts estimates militates against their effective use for short term forecasting. The author considers that the most important use for national accounts statistics is to provide a framework for development planning. The United Nations system is not altogether appropriate for this purpose. It grew up primarily as a system for recording income flows but in development planning one is concerned equally with commodity flows with a great deal of attention being focussed upon intermediate products. The proposals of the working group of African Statisticians for an adaptation of the S.N.A. to African countries represents a most important advance in this respect. In the final section of the paper the author advocates a broader definition of capital formation to include developmental expenditure which is not properly defined as fixed capital formation. Education expenditure is cited as an example. It is suggested that in the national accounts it would be desirable to operate with gross concepts. However, the growth of the capital stock is obviously important in less developed countries and it is suggested that statistical techniques be devised to measure it directly wherever possible. Finally, attention is drawn to the ambiguities and weaknesses in the concept of residence as used at present in the S.N.A.

Notes: This study of 158 organizations sought to depict current uses of computers in R&D. A survey of senior R&D management by the Industrial Research Institute identifies a number of salient features. Routine computer use is becoming a characteristic of scientists, engineers, and managers. Yet characteristics of usage differ markedly by size of R&D unit and by line of business. Moreover, patterns of responses suggest on-going changes toward the time when R&D will be strongly coloured by the context of an integrated, intelligent computer environment. This implies new roles and skill requirements for R&D managers, professionals, and support staff.
