    Notes: Social Security is a paternalist measure, supposedly forcing people to save for their old-age years, based on the assumption that they are not far-seeing enough to do so on their own behalf. It is only ‘supposed’, since the funds mulcted from each generation go not to finance their own retirements, but those of their predecessors. As in the case of all coercive schemes, this one cannot be shown to improve the lot of anyone (with the exception of those who do the imposing). Specifically, this measure has negative implications for family bonds, as it substitutes the state for a function previously carried out by the extended family.

    Notes: Abstract: This paper presents the architecture of a neural network expert system shell. The system captures every rule as a rudimentary neural network, which is called a network element (netel). The aim is to preserve the semantic structure of the expert system rules, while incorporating the learning capability of neural networks into the inferencing mechanism. These netel rules are dynamically linked up to form the rule-tree during the inferencing process, just as a conventional expert system does. The system is also able to adjust its inference strategy according to different users and situations. A rule editor is provided to enable easy maintenance of the netel rules.     Notes: This is a first attempt to study the way imports interact with the primary factors in the Italian technology. We use a two-output, three-input transcendental cost function specification and reject the traditional functions as being inappropriate in explaining the production process. We conclude that value-added is not produced exclusively by capital and labor and, also, that all inputs are substitutes for each other. The model justifies the incorporation of imports as a factor input.

    Notes: Variation in the fatty acid profile of Staphylococcus aureus WRRC B124 grown at varying temperatures was determined. The range of incubation temperatures tested induced both qualitative and quantitative differences in S. aureus fatty acid profile. While branched chained saturated fatty acids were the predominate species at 37C, C18:1 and C16:1 monounsaturated fatty acids were predominant at lower temperatures (12 and 19C). Iso-branched C14:0, C16:0 and C18:0 saturated fatty acids were expressed exclusively at 37C and several C17:0 and C20:0 fatty acids were suppressed at 12C. Results demonstrated that S. aureus had altered fatty acid profile in response to changes in growth temperature.

    Notes: This manuscript provides risk estimators for acute lethality from radiation-induced injury to the bone marrow of humans after uniform total-body exposure to low linear energy transfer (LET) radiation. The risk estimators are needed for nuclear disaster risk assessment. The approach used is based on the dose X, in units of D50 (i.e., the dose required for 50% lethality). Using animal data, it is demonstrated that the use of dose in units of D50 eliminates most of the variability associated with mammalian species, type of low-LET radiation, and low-LET dose rate. Animal data are used to determine the shape of the dose-effect curve for marrow-syndrome lethality in man and to develop a functional relationship for the dependence of the D50 on dose rate. The functional relationship is used, along with the Weibull model, to develop acute lethality risk estimators for complex temporal patterns of continuous exposure to low-LET radiation. Animal data are used to test model predictions.

    Notes: Calculations of attributable risks have attracted increasing interest recently. However, these efforts have been limited to mostly one agent, radiation, and no interactions with effects of other toxic agents have been taken into account. This paper outlines a generic approach to the calculation of attributable risks for an exposure to several toxic agents and interaction effects associated with them. In this calculation, the partition of interaction terms between the agents responsible is of particular importance. At present, there are no rules on how to assign equitable shares, so one methodology will be proposed and others discussed briefly. For one example of an assignment, the standard errors of the attributable risks are determined in terms of the uncertainties of the input parameters, thus setting the stage for a comparison of the different shares of responsibility.

    Notes: While it is agreed that capital made use of race to restructure for more profitable production, there have been few attempts to incorporate race within the general framework of historical materialist inquiry and class politics. This paper discusses the social construction of race in Birmingham, Alabama for the industrial, Fordist, and post-Fordist phases of U.S. capitalist development. No other industrial city in America would rely upon black labor so early in its industrial development as Birmingham, providing the opportunity to examine the social construction of race from an early stage of industrial capitalism. While southern periodizations of capitalist development correspond in some ways to those of the regulationists, they also diverge in other important ways, precisely because the southern road to capitalism was different, defining the path for the entry of blacks into capital-labor relations.

    Notes: Phenylglyoxal (PG), an aromatic α-dicarbonyl, is used in a variety of industrial, medical, and biological research applications. The compound delays spore germination and inhibits vegetative cells of both aerobic and anaerobic sporeforming bacteria, interacts with several critical bacterial growth factors, and is structurally similar to a number of approved food flavoring agents. Previous research demonstrated inhibitory activity against Clostridium sporogenes in model systems. Therefore, we investigated the shelf-life enhancing effectiveness of PG in C. sporogenes-inoculated vacuum-packaged ground beef at 32C. During extended incubation under temperature abuse conditions, PG delayed undesirable color changes and prevented organoleptic spoilage. Five μg PG/g inhibited proteolysis, while 156 μg PG/g delayed conversion of myoglobin to metmyoglobin, prevented H2S production, maintained product quality and texture for 25 days, and reduced thermal resistance of C. sporogenes spores at 90C. The observed activity of PG suggests that similar activity might be found with currently approved α-dicarbonyls. Furthermore, the compound's effect on thermal resistance may serve as an example of compounds that could be used to reduce thermal processing requirements of heat-sensitive and/or minimally processed foods.
