Description / Table of Contents: [Gd4(C2)](Cl, I)6, ein interstitiell stabilisiertes, heteroleptisches Gadoliniumsesquihalogenid[Gd4(C2)](Cl, I)6 erhält man aus CsI, Gd, GdCl3 und C2I4 in verschweißten Niob-Ampullen bei 1000/800°C in Form von schwarzen, glänzenden Nadeln. Die Kristallstruktur (tetragonal; P4/mbm; Z = 2; a = 1347,5(1); c = 1212,5(1) pm) ist ähnlich wie jene von Na[Mo4]O6 bzw. [Sc4B]Cl6.
Notes: [Gd4(C2)](Cl, I)6 is obtained from CsI, Gd, GdCl3 and C2I4 in sealed niobium containers at 1000/800°C as black, shiny needles. The crystal structure (tetragonal, P4/mbm, Z = 2, a = 1347.5(1), c = 1212.5(1) pm) is similar to that of Na[Mo4]O6 and [Sc4B]Cl6. It may be regarded as being built from octahedra sharing common trans edges running in the [001] direction. The octahedra contain C2 units as interstitials. Every third octahedron contains a disordered C2 unit perpendicular to those in the two neighboring [Gd6(C2)] octahedra and is therefore compressed in the direction of the (pseudo) C4 axis. Calculations of the electronic structure of an “empty” [Gd4]Cl6 structure reveals a total of 13 electrons necessary to occupy all metal-metal bonding states. The incorporation of a carbon dimer substantially alters the bonding conditions for [Gd4(C2)]X6 (X = Cl, I). The formal charge of -6 of the C2 unit is significantly reduced as πg states split up, Gd—Gd and Gd—C bonding states are occupied and bonding dx2—y2 orbitals combine to form the lowest unoccupied energy states.

Description / Table of Contents: An Oxychloride of Calcium: Ca4OCl6Ca4OCl6 (hexagonal, P63mc, Z = 2), a = 905.8(3), c = 686.3(4) pm, (R = 0.031) crystallizes as colourless needles from reducing melts (CaCl2, Ca) that contain small amounts of „oxygen“. It contains „isolated“ tetrahedral units [Ca4O] and is isotypic with e.g., Ba4OCl6, Yb4OCl6 and K6HgS4. Ca4OCl6 does not form in the dehydration process of, for example, CaCl2 · 6 H2O.
B. CaCl2 · 6 H2O.

Notes: The title reaction leads to diastereomeric lithium carbanion pairs that are configurationally unstable and equilibrate even at temperatures below -50 °C. The initially formed epimer (1S)-epi-10 is rapidly converted to the thermodynamically more stable (1R)-10 (in toluene solution). Carboxylation, acylation with acid chlorides, stannylation, and silylation take place at the α-position with stereoinversion (79-86% ee). Methylating agents attack the γ-position; here, the stereochemical course depends on the leaving group, anti-SE′ for the iodide (50% ee) and syn-SE′ (48% ee) for the tosylate.

Notes: We report on the first example of a transition metal-catalyzed cyclization reaction of a Fischer carbene complex. It comprises the generation of vinyl- and divinyl cyclopentadienes under exceedingly mild conditions at 20 °C by condensation of (1-amino-1,3-butadien-2-yl)carbene complexes (= cross-conjugated metallahexatrienes) (CO)5M=C(OEt)C(=CHNR2)CR1=CHR23 (M = Cr, W) with alkynes R3C≡CH 4 (R3 = Ph, cyclohex-1-enyl, isopropenyl, methoxymethyl, 1-trimethylsiloxycyclohex-1-yl) in the presence of catalytic amounts of [(COD)RhCl]2. The starting compounds 3 are accessible in high yields by addition of enamines (E)-R2NCH=CHR22 to (1-alkynyl)carbene complexes (CO)5M=C(OEt)C≡CR11 (M = Cr, W; R1 = Ph, cyclohex-1-enyl).

Notes: The exchange of PPh3 in Au55(PPh3)12Cl6 by Na2[B12H11SH] using a phase-transfer reaction from CH2Cl2 to water needs 6 weeks for reaction, but finally results in the quantitative formation of Au55[(B12H11SH)Na2]12Cl6 (2). Cluster 2, which is of considerable stability in aqueous solution, has been characterized by 1H-NMR, 11B-NMR, and IR spectroscopy as well as by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Na+ cations can be exchanged by (octyl)4N+ making the resulting cluster 4 soluble in polar organic solvents. The electrical properties of 2 and 4 are compared with those of Au55[Ph2PC6H4SO3N(octyl)4]12Cl6 (3), the ammonium derivative of the sodium salt. Cluster 3 shows the expected increase of activation energy in the temperature range of 130-250 K owing to the increase of cluster spacing compared with the sodium derivative. However, clusters 2 and 4, show electromigration in the electric field, caused by the huge amount of ionic charges in the ligand shell.

Notes: (η2-Formaldehyde)zirconocene dimer (8) cleanly adds one or two molar equivalents of the borane HB(C6F5)2 by insertion of the H-[B] unit into the zirconium-carbon bond of the metallaoxirane moieties to form the mono- and bis-insertion products 16 and 17, respectively. These systems contain five-membered heterocyclic rings that are built up by connecting five different elements, namely H, B, C, O, and Zr. The bis(borane) insertion product 17 was characterized by an X-ray crystal structure analysis. (Butadiene)zirconocene reacts with HB(C6F5)2 in a similar way by insertion of the H-[B] unit into the (butadiene)C4-Zr linkage to form the metallacycle 18.

Notes: A tetranuclear mixed-spin nickel(II) complex featuring two urea molecules in an unprecedented μ3-ĸN:ĸN′:ĸO coordination mode has been structurally characterized. The two central high-spin nickel(II) ions exhibit ferromagnetic coupling (J = +3.4 cm-1) mediated by the NH2-C-O linkages of the bridging urea. In solution the temperature dependence of the UV/Vis optical absorption and of the magnetic moment indicate that, upon cooling, additional solvent molecules bind to the terminal low-spin metal ions and a concomitant spin change occurs. In the solid state the coordinated urea ligands can be thermally degraded to cyanate within the grip of the multimetallic nickel(II) site.

Notes: In order to investigate nonlinear optical properties, in particular second harmonic generation (SHG) of organometallic complexes, numerous dipolar monocationic sesquifulvalene complexes of the general form [Mc-Z-C7H6]+ have been synthesised (Mc = metallocenyl), wherein the metallocenyl moiety Mc acts as an electron donor, and the tropylium cation C7H6+ as an electron acceptor. The mutual electronic influence of the donor and the acceptor groups is warranted by a linking spacer Z, which is a single bond [Mc = CpFeC5H4 (4a); Mc = CpRuC5H4 (4b)], an unsaturated bridge containing olefins [Z = (E-CH=CH)n: n = 1, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (25a), Mc = CpRuC5H4 (25b); n = 2, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (26); n = 3, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (27)], or thiophene units [Z = 2,5-C4H2S, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (28); Z = 5,5′-(2,2′-C4H2S)2, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (29); Z = 2-(5-E-CH=CH)C4H2S, Mc = CpFeC5H4 (30)]. For the salts of 4a·BF4, 4b·PF6 and 25a·PF6 X-ray structure determinations have been performed [4a·BF4: orthorhombic, Pnma, = 21.75(2), b = 9.900(2), c = 6.881(3) Å, V = 1482.0(15) Å3, Z = 4; 4b·PF6: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.104(3), b = 18.206(14), c = 11.228(4) Å, β = 107.59(3), V = 1579.1(15) Å3, Z = 4; 25a·PF6: triclinic, P1bar, a = 10.067(6), b = 10.496(6), c = 11.418(6) Å, α = 94.07(4), β = 110.96(4), γ = 102.88(5)°, V = 1083.1(11) Å3, Z = 2]; the solid state structures indicate an almost coplanar arrangement of the organic π-system. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal an irreversible one-electron reduction and an electrochemically reversible one-electron oxidation step for the ferrocenyl derivatives, whereas the ruthenocenyl derivatives demonstrate an irreversible two-electron oxidation. The redox potentials clearly indicate that the oxidation occurs at the metallocene unit, and the reduction is localised on the tropylium entity. In the electronic absorption spectra two intense bands are observed in the region 400 〈 λ 〈 900 nm which undergo strong negative solvatochromic shifts. The origin of the high-energy absorption band is assumed to be an interligand charge-transfer (LL-CT) transition, and the low-energy absorption band is assigned to a donor-acceptor charge-transfer (DA-CT) transition. Whereas the LL-CT is continuously shifted to lower energy with increasing spacer length, the energy of the DA-CT approaches a limiting value. A comparable phenomenon is also observed for the difference between the oxidation and reduction potentials obtained from electrochemical studies. Investigations concerning the nonlinear optical properties of the dipolar cationic sesquifulvalene complexes by means of hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) indicate that the ferrocenyl derivatives fluoresce due to two-photon absorption whereas the ruthenocenyl congeners exhibit second harmonic generation with considerably larger first hyperpolarizability which is partly resonance-enhancement based.
