    Notes: : This study was conducted to determine the fatty acid (FA) compositions and oxidative stabilities of cold-pressed cranberry, carrot, hemp, and caraway seed oils. The cold-pressed cranberry and hemp seed oils exhibited higher α-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) contents with levels of 22 and 19 g/100 g fatty acids, respectively. Cold-pressed carrot seed oil contained about 82% oleic acid and had the lowest total saturated fatty acids among all tested oils. Cold-pressed caraway seed oil had the greatest oxidative stability with an OSI value of 150 hours. In addition, cold-pressed carrot seed oil had the lightest color while hemp seed oil was the darkest among all the oils tested.

    Notes: Raw beef rounds were surface inoculated with salmonellae. Some of the rounds were mechanically blade tenderized. Both surface and core samples from each round studied were examined for the presence of and the logarithmic level of salmonellae. Mechanical tenderization increased the level of salmonellae found in core samples by about one logarithm. Large samples taken from cores of rounds which were not tenderized contained small numbers of salmonellae. Dipping inoculated rounds into a 50 ppm chlorine solution did not prevent the occurrence of salmonellae in core samples of mechanically tenderized units. Salmonella survived in the core and on the surface of some but not all inoculated rounds cooked to an internal temperature of 130°F.

    Notes: During the last 40 years, nitrate (NO3−) has become one of the most common ground water contaminants. Stream riparian zones are considered important ecological ecotones that decrease the NO3− load of ground water discharging into streams. This study uses NO3−/Cl− ratios, natural abundances of15N and18O in NO3−, and an in situ15NO3− tracer experiment to evaluate NO3− reducing processes occurring in ground water within a narrow grassed buffer strip bordering a stream in an agricultural watershed. The NO3−/Cl− ratios (1.9-0.0 [M/M]) indicate that both NO3− consuming processes and mixing of two ground water flow regimes with different NO3− loads contribute to the drop observed in ground water NO3− concentrations within the riparian zone. δ15N and δ18O of the ground water NO3− within the riparian zone (δ15N = 5.1 to 48.8 %c; δ18O = 1.1 to 17.8 %c) were enriched compared to the ground water below the adjacent cultivated field (δ15N = 3.8 to 10.1 %0; δ18O = 0.5 to 6.2 %c). A significant linear relationship (r2=0.97) between ground water δ15N and δ18O in NO3− was found, which is consistent with NO3− consumption by microbial denitrification. The estimated enrichment factors for15N are a factor of 1.5 higher than for18O. The in situ15NO3− tracer experiment conclusively confirmed that denitrification is occurring within the ground water of the riparian zone and demonstrates that denitrification rates can be directly measured in situ.

    Notes: The Latemar reef buildup of the central Dolomites (northern Italy) provides a rare opportunity to examine an in-place Middle Triassic (Upper Anisian to Lower Ladinian) platform margin that is not strongly deformed or dolomitized. The margin lies between the flat lying platform interior and steeply dipping foreslope clinoforms. Across this transition, the depositional profile relates directly to a consistent lateral facies pattern: (1) restricted-biota grainstone of the platform interior, (2) ‘Tubiphytes’-rich boundstone and (3) diverse-biota grainstone that grades into (4) foreslope breccia beds. The boundstone and diverse-biota grainstone facies comprise the platform margin.The boundstone facies consists of a framework of small (〈 10 cm) skeletal remains (〈 10% by volume) with associated biotic crusts, internal sediments and syndepositional cements. Crusts and cements constitute most of the rock volume and created the boundstone fabric. Biotic crusts exhibit gravity-defying geometries and range from a light grey, ‘structure grumeleuse’ rind to dark grey, micritic laminae. Both cements and biotic crusts occur as redeposited talus in the foreslope talus deposits, indicating a syndepositional origin.The diverse-biota grainstone facies primarily consists of skeletal-peloidal grainstone with a diverse open marine biotic assemblage, in contrast to the restricted biota grainstones of the platform interior that have a low diversity, restricted marine biota. Metre scale hexacoral boundstone and centimetre-scale sponge boundstone and microbial boundstone occur as isolated patches (tens to hundreds of metres apart) within the diverse-biota grainstone facies.The depositional profile, facies zonation and biotic constituents all indicate that the Latemar buildup had a shallow water reef margin, in contrast to previous interpretations that these were upper slope reefs. The syndepositional biotic crusts and inorganic cementation played key roles in stabilizing the boundstone fabric to form a wave-resistant reef fabric.

    Notes: Reproductive cycling and oocyte development were examined for female tilefish, Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps Goode and Bean, captured in the South Atlantic Bight, U.S.A. A total of 752 female tilefish was collected during 15 sampling periods from May 1982 to December 1983. Reproductive cycling was quantified using four techniques: gross visual estimation of ovarian stages, histological examination of ovaries, follicle diameter measurements, and an ovarian index. The relative accuracies of these techniques also were evaluated. All four methods indicated that L. chamaeleonticeps was capable of spawning from March to June. Most spawning occurred between April and June. Ovarian development was positively correlated with the change in daylength. Follicular development was asynchronous, which is characteristic of multiple spawners. Folliculogenesis was similar to that in most oviparous teleosts.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les réactions de femelles préalablement accouplées de Mouches de Hesse ont été examinées en analysant le comportement de femelles isolées sur blé et sur avoine. Le répertoire comportemental de ces femelles comprenait: le vol, l'atterrissage sur feuille, la flexion du corps de sorte que l'extrémité de l'abdomen touchât la surface de la feuille, l'antennation, les mouvements de l'extrémité de l'abdomen sur la feuille à angle droit des nervures, le repos avec la tarière droite et encore dévaginée, le repos avec la tarière télescopée à l'intérieur du corps. Sur blé plus que sur avoine, les femelles après atterrissage ont présenté une fréquence plus élevée de passage de la flexion à l'antennation que de la flexion à l'abdomen droit. Durant les 5 premières minutes d'observation, les individus libérés dans des enceintes avec blé fléchirent et ‘antennèrent’ 2 à 3 fois plus que ceux libérés sur avoine. Les durées des différentes séquences différaient aussi: sur blé, pendant les 5 premières minutes, les femelles passèrent plus de 50% du temps à fléchir, tandis que sur avoine elles passèrent plus de 50% du temps en repos. Les femelles restèrent aussi plus longtemps sur les feuilles de blé et y pondirent 4 fois plus d'oeufs que sur avoine. Les femelles de M. destructor ont montré une plasticité du seuil d'acceptation. Pendant les premières heures de ponte, elles ont été très sélectives et refusèrent, ou ne pondirent que quelques oeufs sur avoine, mais acceptèrent volontiers le blé. La discrimination s'est poursuivie tant que les femelles ont eu accès au blé en même temps qu'à l'avoine. Cependant, quand les femelles ont été privées de blé pendant plusieures heures, l'acceptation de l'avoine a augmenté. Cet accroissement de l'acceptation a eu lieu à peu près au moment où les femelles sur blé pondaient leurs derniers oeufs.
    Notes: Abstract Responses of mated female Hessian flies were investigated by analysing the behaviour of individual flies in wheat and oats. The behavioural repertoire of such females included: flying, alighting on leaves, arching of the body so that the tip of the abdomen touched the leaf surface, antennation, movements of the tip of the abdomen across the leaf at right angles to leaf veins, sitting with the ovipositor straight but still extended, and sitting with the ovipositor telescoped into the body. After alighting, females on wheat showed a higher frequency of transitions from arching to antennation and a lower frequency of transitions from arching to abdomen straight than females on oats. During the first 5 min of observations, individuals released into arenas with wheat arched and antennated 2–3 times more frequently than females released into oats. Time allotted to behaviours also differed; during the first 5 min, females in wheat spent 50 percent more time arching, whereas females in oats spent 50 percent more time sitting. Females in wheat also stayed longer and laid 4 times more eggs than females in oats. Temporal changes in egglaying were monitored by quantifying hourly rates of egglaying in no-choice assays for several hours following mating at 9:00 am. During the first and second hours post-mating, egglaying occurred infrequently. However, during the third hour post-mating (11:00 am to noon) females on wheat laid 5 times more eggs than females on oats. Rates of egglaying decreased on wheat but increased on oats during the fourth hour, and then during the fifth hour, decreased on both wheat and oats. Changes in egglaying responses were also evident when behaviours of individual females were measured 1–3 h vs. 3–7 h post-mating. Females deprived of host plants and released into wheat or oats later in the day showed higher frequencies of arching and antennation and laid more eggs before leaving the arena.
