    Notes: The occurrence of Babesiosoma stableri n. sp. in the erythrocytes of Rana pipiens pipiens extends the host range of babesiosomids to the Salientia. The proposed sequence of developmental stages includes the following events: (1) two successive nuclear divisions of the uninucleate trophozoite produce a tetranucleate organism, (2) cytoplasmic cleavage initiated at each pole of the tetranucleate parasite results in four daughter individuals arranged in a cross-form, (3) the four merozoites originating from the cruciform schizont separate without the formation of a residual mass of cytoplasm, (4) gametocytes which presumably arise from differentiated merozoites do not exhibit dimorphism. The morphology and characteristics of the parasite's development were not altered when B. stableri was experimentally transferred to: R. p. sphenocephala, Rana catesbeiana, Bufo americanus, Bufo woodhousei fowleri, and Bufo terrestris. Experimental infections, with few exceptions, exhibited a peak parasitemia followed by a decline in the number of babesiosomids. Infections persisted at a low level or disappeared during the period of study.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Thru the application of technics of serology, cultivation in acid and basic media, host specificity and reaction in foreign hosts it became possible to characterize 10 species of Crithidia and to assign names to 5 of those previously undesignated. Despite a loose host specificity under experimental conditions it was found that each isolate from a different insect host was a different species.

    Notes: Abstract  Heavy rainfalls, between 25 and 100 mm·h–1, were simulated on Pliocene/Quaternary sediments. To reproduce the heterogeneity of natural environments, 231 small plots of various sizes (between 2.5 and 3.5 m2; mean: about 3 m2) were used. The duration of all simulations was 1 h. We used water that had been collected during natural rainfall. The concentration of clay particles in the sheet wash depended upon the concentration of dissolved sodium in the wash (for about 42%) and of the sheet wash quantity (for about 37%). Under natural water conditions colloidal matter, like clay minerals, is charged negatively and therefore is destabilized by metal cations such as in the case of Na+. Results suggest that relatively higher concentrations of montmorrillonite were related to higher concentrations of sodium as opposed to illite and kaolinite. Microflakes of up to 25 μ were observed to vary between face-to-edge and face-to-face modes (competition between protons and other cations). The concentration of dissolved sodium (Na+) in the runoff water depends on water and sodium balances such as atmospheric input, infiltration, evaporation and surface water runoff. The reduction of vegetation cover increases the amount of salt and amorphous matter in/on the topsoil between heavy rainfall generations. The best predictor to explain montmorillonite, illite and kaolinite in % of mineral clay-sized matter in the surface water runoff (sheet wash) is the percentage of each clay mineral in the topsoil. As opposed to illite and kaolinite, more sheet wash indicate for montmorillonite relatively higher concentrations in the wash. The results of model simulations were confirmed on different field plots of about 1 ha and small catchments during natural heavy rainfall events. Models can also be used to understand and to better simulate sheet, rill and gully erosion, micropedimentation; and pedimentation.

    Notes: Abstract Parametrisations of meridional energy and moisture transport used in zonally averaged climate models are validated using reanalysis data and results from a doubling CO2-experiment from a general circulation model. Global meridional fluxes of moisture and sensible heat are calculated by integrating surface and top-of-the-atmosphere vertical fluxes from one pole to the other. The parametrisations include an eddy-diffusion term, representing down-gradient transport of specific humidity and temperature due to the transient atmospheric eddies at mid- and high latitudes, and simple representations of the mean meridional circulation. Qualitative and quantitative agreement between the increased hydrological cycle in the 2×CO2-run from the GCM and the parametrisation is found. The performance for the sensible heat flux shows larger differences to the GCM results, particularly at low latitudes. Seasonal variations of the moisture and sensible heat transport are well captured by parametrisations including the influence of the mean meridional circulation. Interannual variability cannot be simulated. An examination of the parametrisations on different spatial scales suggests that they should not be used for small scales. Furthermore, two closures for the zonal distribution of precipitation were examined. They are used in zonally averaged atmosphere models coupled to an ocean model with different ocean basins at one latitudinal belt. An assessment of both the reanalysis data and the GCM results shows that both closures exhibit very similar behaviour and are valid in the long-term mean and seasonal cycle. Interannual variability is not captured well. They become invalid for spatial scales smaller than 10∘.

    Notes: Abstract Mice with a null mutation introduced in the desmin gene were used to study the mechanical role of intermediate filaments in smooth muscle cells. Vas deferens (VD), urinary bladder (UB) and portal vein (PV) preparations were obtained from adult animals lacking desmin (Des −/−) and from age- and weight-matched wild-type animals (Des +/+). Active force per cross-sectional area was decreased in the smooth muscle of the Des −/− compared with Des +/+ mice (VD to 42%; UB to 34%). Quantitative gel electrophoresis suggests a marginally lower cellular content of myosin, but the organization of the contractile apparatus appeared unchanged by electron microscopy. A similar reduction in stress was measured in Des −/− skinned fibres showing that altered activation mechanisms were not involved. The results indicate that the reduced active force is caused by low intrinsic force generation of the contractile filaments or subtle modifications in the coupling between the contractile elements and the cytoskeleton. The relationship between length and passive stress was less steep in the Des −/− samples and a second length force curve after maximal extension revealed a loss of passive stress. The maximal shortening velocity was reduced in Des −/− skinned VD and UB preparations by approximately 25–40%. This was associated with an increased relative content of the basic essential myosin light chain, suggesting that alterations in the contractile system towards a slower, more economical muscle had occurred. PV preparations showed no difference in mechanical properties in Des +/+ and Des −/− animals, a result that was consistent with the predominance of vimentin instead of desmin in this vascular tissue. In conclusion, the results show that, although intermediate filaments in smooth muscle are not required for force generation or maintenance of passive tension, they have a role in cellular transmission of both active and passive force.

    Description: Facing the increase in world population and the stagnation in available arable land there is a high demand for optimizing the food production. Considering the world-wide and ongoing reduction of the agricultural labor force novel approaches for food production are required. Vertical farming may be such a solution where plants are being produced indoors in racks, cared by robotic appliances which will be operated by specialized software. Given the multitude of parameters which determine the ideal condition, a lot of data needs to be acquired. As this data is used to adapt the entire Cyber-Physical System to a changing environment the data has to be secure and adaptations have to consider safety aspects as well. Such systems must hence be secure, safe, scalable and self-adaptable to a high degree. We present an important element for such solutions, a cloud, IoT and robotic based smart farming framework.

    Description: Facing food insecurity and overuse of resources due to effects of climate change, humanity needs to find new ways to secure food production and produce close to consumers. Vertical farming, where plants are grown in vertical arrays inside buildings with help of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) components, could contribute to solving this issue. Such systems integrate heterogeneous devices on different computing layers and acquire a lot of data to monitor and optimize the production process. We created an indoor testing unit in which growing conditions can be monitored and controlled to optimize growth of microgreens. This setup includes an Indoor Farming Support as a Service (IFSaaS) prototype that provides safe and secure monitoring and controlling, as well as self-adaption of an indoor farming system. In this article we provide information about the combination of most suitable technologies.
