    Estimating soil resilience to compaction by measuring changes in surface and subsurface levels (2001)

    Notes: Abstract. In view of the increasing wheel loads of agricultural vehicles, the question arises as to whether soil can recover from the mechanical impact of traffic. The damage to soil quality depends also on the soils resilience. This paper presents a new approach to monitoring vertical soil movement in situ. We assessed the effects of trafficking the soil with excavators and sugarbeet harvesters by monitoring surface and subsurface levels. The caterpillar loads of the crawlers varied from 13 to 19 t, the wheel loads of the sugarbeet harvesters from 6 to 11 t. Classical geodetic levelling was used to record soil surface movement and a hydrostatic settlement meter measured deformation at three depths within the soil profile. The results of three field tests prove the importance of wheel load and soil moisture for soil compaction. Trafficking very dry soil with an excavator did not cause significant plastic deformation in 30 cm depth. Conversely, trafficking wet soil with a sugarbeet harvester led to soil sinkage of 1 to 2 cm even at 60 cm depth. Increased wheel load in subsequent passes led to greater subsidence than during the first pass. Settlement decreased from the soil surface to deeper layers, but it remained throughout the monitoring period of up to 12 days. No soil recovery from plastic deformation was recorded within this time. The measuring system has the potential for long-term monitoring of the mechanical recovery of the soil. Additionally, it can contribute to the validation of mechanical impact models, which are based on soil stresses.

The halogen set free during the combustion is brought into reaction with solid silver iodide. The iodine thus released is absorbed in sodium hydroxide, oxidized to iodate, and finally titrated with thiosulfate. The method is especially good for determining traces.
    Abstract: Résumé Description d'une méthode iodométrique pour le dosage des halogènes dans les substances organiques. L'halogène libéré par la combustion réagit sur de l'iodure d'argent solide. L'iode libéré est recueilli dans une solution de soude, oxydé en iodate et finalement titré par du thiosulfate. La méthode est particulièrement appropriée au dosage de traces.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine jodometrische Methode zur Bestimmung der Halogene in organischen Substanzen beschrieben. Das bei der Verbrennung in Freiheit gesetzte Halogen wird mit festem Silberjodid in Reaktion gebracht. Das dabei freigewordene Jod wird in Natronlauge absorbiert, zu Jodat oxydiert und schließlich mit Thiosulfat titriert. Das Verfahren eignet sich besonders zur Spurenbestimmung.

    Notes: Summary 1. Anti-BPM is a neuron-specific antiserum which specifically recognizes the D2 cell adhesion molecule in crossed immunoelectrophoresis of Triton X-100-solubilized brain extracts. Here the effect of this antiserum on thein vitro development of cerebellar neuronal cultures is described. 2. The initial adhesion of cells and neurite outgrowth were not influenced by immunoglobulin fractions of anti-BPM. However, after 5 daysin vitro the cultures had become completely disorganized, with the majority of cells being dead at immunoglobulin concentrations greater than 0.5 mg/ml culture medium. 3. This effect was seen only with immunoglobulins and their F(ab′)2 fragments, the F(ab′) fragments being without effect. The addition of anti-BPM to 8-day-old cultures resulted in a more rapid and pronounced rate of cell death. In many instances this was preceded by a rapid “destabilization” of culture organization. 4. The cytotoxic effect of anti-BPM was neuron specific and the small numbers of astrocytes and fibroblasts found in the cultures were unaffected by prolonged exposure to this serum.

    Notes: Abstract A survey of 1592 lakes ( 〉4 ha and ≤ 2,000 ha) was conducted in Fall, 1984. The study area was three regions of the eastern United States (Northeast, Upper Midwest, and Southeast) expected to contain the most lakes with acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) ≤400 μeq/L. The design of the survey provides statistically reliable estimates of the number, location and chemical characteristics of lakes in the study area. Frequency distribution statistics are presented for pH, ANC, sulfate and organic anion. The highest percentages and numbers of acidic lakes occurred in Florida, the Adirondaks, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The highest percentages and numbers of lakes with high sulfate concentrations occurred in the Poconos/Catskills, Southern New England and Florida. The highest percentages and numbers of lakes with high organic anion concentrations occurred in Northeastern Minnesota, the Upper Great Lakes Area and Florida. The percentage of acidic lakes by sulfate concentration class revealed no discernable pattern across subregions. In contrast, the acidic lakes occur with the highest frequency in the lowest organic anion concentration class. The complex distribution of low ANC lakes cannot be explained simply by sulfate concentrations or organic acids.
