    Description: In the southern border area, where Ecuador is located with neighboring Peru. There are two important cantons for its commercial passage, the canton Macará in the province of Loja, and the canton Huaquillas in the province of El Oro. Through the Coordination 7 of the Ministry of Public Health, thanks to the ProSalud Frontera Sur Project, the database of the Automated Daily Registry of Consultations and Outpatient Care was managed, which allowed us to clarify the problems at the public health level in these cantons. It can be observed throughout the text that women present a greater number of diseases compared to men, with the latter remaining stable over the three years for both Ecuadorians and foreigners.

Se encuentran dos cantones importantes por su paso comercial, el cantón Macará de la provincia de Loja, y el cantón Huaquillas de la provincia de El Oro. En donde, por medio de la Coordinación 7 del Ministerio de Salud Pública se gestionó gracias al Proyecto ProSalud Frontera Sur, la base de datos Registro Diario Automatizado de Consultas y Atenciones Ambulatorias, que nos permitió clarificar la problemática a nivel de salud pública en estos cantones. Se puede observar a lo largo del texto que las mujeres presentan mayores cantidades de enfermedades frente a los hombres manteniéndose estables estos en los tres años y tanto para ecuatorianos como para extranjeros

    Description: This chapter deals with magnetic colloids with catalytic properties for the treatment of polluted waters and the efficient production of fuel alternatives. This kind of materials presents great advantages such as high surface/volume ratio, reproducibility, selectivity, ability to be magnetic harvested, functionalizable surfaces (e.g. with tunable pores and selective chelators deposited on them), high efficiencies and reusability. In particular, this chapter will consider the case of magnetic iron oxide colloids, which can be easily synthesized at low cost, are biocompatible and presents a well-developed surface chemistry. The most common techniques for the synthesis and functionalization of these magnetic nanoparticles will be reviewed and summarized. The iron oxide nanoparticles present outstanding properties that can be exploited in different aspect of the wastewater treatment such as heavy metals and organic pollutants removal by ionic exchange or adsorption, and degradation of the contaminants by advanced oxidation processes, among others. In the field of alternative energies, they have also been used as catalysts for biofuels production from oil crops, in Fischer-Tropsch reactions for liquid hydrocarbons and many other processes with potential environmental impact.

    Description: The optimization of both the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis method to prepare graphene and the Improved Hummers method to prepare graphite oxide is reported. Copper and nickel were used as catalysts in the CVD-graphene synthesis, CH4 and H2being used as precursor gases. Synthesis variables were optimized according to a thickness value, calculated using a homemade Excel-VBA application. In the case of copper, the maximum thickness value was obtained for those samples synthesized at 1050°C, a CH4/H2 flow rate ratio of 0.07 v/v, a total flow of 60 Nml/min, and a time on stream of 10 min. In the case of nickel, a reaction temperature of 980°C, a CH4/H2 flow rate ratio of 0.07 v/v, a total flow of 80 Nml/min, and a time on stream of 1 min were required to obtain a high thickness value. On the other hand, the Improved Hummers method used in the synthesis of graphite oxide was optimized. The resultant product was similar to that reported in literature in terms of quality and characteristics but both time and cost of the synthesis procedure were considerably decreased.

It begins by deciphering the dietary changes of early hominids and how these changes influenced their physical and cognitive development, from dentition to increased brain size. It then analyzes the cultural and socio-political influence on diet in ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Rome and China. It highlights food in pre-Columbian cultures, highlighting agricultural diversity, sustainable practices and the cosmic connection with the earth. It also addresses the Industrial Revolution and how it transformed food patterns, leading to health problems in modernity. It also discusses the "green revolution" and technologies to improve food production. And finally, it explains sustainability in food systems and innovations for the future, such as laboratory meat and insect-based nutrition. The book concludes by recognizing nutrition as a multidisciplinary science, which seeks to ensure health and quality of life. This work is the result of a collective effort of academics seeking to understand human nutrition from its origins to the present.

Luego analiza la influencia cultural y sociopolítica en la dieta de antiguas civilizaciones como Egipto, Roma y China. Se destaca la alimentación en culturas precolombinas, resaltando la diversidad agrícola, sus prácticas sostenibles y la conexión cósmica con la tierra. Aborda también, la Revolución Industrial y cómo transformó los patrones alimentarios, llevando a problemas de salud en la modernidad. También se discute la "revolución verde" y las tecnologías para mejorar la producción alimentaria. Y finalmente se explica sobre la sostenibilidad en los sistemas alimentarios y las innovaciones para el futuro, como la carne de laboratorio y la nutrición basada en insectos.     Description: The chapter starts with a historical overview of the developments in environmental biotechnology and discusses several essential concepts. Several applications are mentioned, such as: biomarkers, biosensors, biofuels, bioremediation, biotransformation. In addition, the main biotechnological tools applied to environmental pollution monitoring and bioremediation processes are described, of which technical considerations, remediation and mitigation strategies are taken into account. One of the bioremediation tools is highlighted as phytoremediation, which includes: phytoextraction, rhizofiltration, phytostabilization, rhizodegradation, phytodegradation and phytovolitization. The most outstanding research and projects in the Latin American context are also presented. In addition, some biotechnological tools are presented to promote sustainable agriculture with the use of microorganisms as biological control, and the use of biofertilizers. Finally, applications for the mitigation of the environmental impact generated by oil activity are presented, such as CO2 injection techniques in subsurface reservoirs. Also mentioned are applications in the production of new sources of sustainable energy and biotechnological trends in the development of alternative biomaterials to leather and plastic, detailing the processing of mycelia for the textile industry. In conclusion, this guide serves as a support for students who are interested in learning about Environmental Biotechnology or who are taking this subject.

    Description: El capítulo parte de un recorrido histórico sobre los acontecimientos de la Biotecnología Ambiental y se discuten varios conceptos esenciales. Se mencionan varias aplicaciones, tales como: biomarcadores, biosensores, biocombustibles, biorremediación, biotransformación. Además, se describe las principales herramientas biotecnológicas aplicadas al monitoreo de la contaminación ambiental y a procesos de biorremediación, de las cuales se toman en cuenta las consideraciones técnicas, las estrategias de recuperación y mitigación. Se destaca una de las herramientas de biorremediación como es la fitorremediación, que abarca: fitoextracción, rizofiltracción, fitoestabilización, rizodegradación, fitodegradación y fitovolitización. Asimismo, se proyectan las investigaciones y los proyectos más destacados en el contexto de América Latina. Además, se da a conocer algunas herramientas biotecnológicas para promover la agricultura sustentable con el uso de microorganismos como control biológico, y uso de biofertilizantes. Por último, se presentan aplicaciones para la mitigación del impacto ambiental generado por la actividad petrolera como las técnicas de inyección de CO2 en reservorios subsuperficiales. También se mencionan las aplicaciones en la producción de nuevas fuentes de energía sustentable y tendencias biotecnológicas en el desarrollo de biomateriales alternativas al cuero y al plástico, en el que se detalla el procesamiento de micelios para la industria textil. En conclusión, esta guía sirve de apoyo para los estudiantes que estén interesados en conocer la asignatura de Biotecnología Ambiental o que estén cursando dicha asignatura.

    Description: El cerro de Alarcos (Ciudad Real): Formación y desarrollo de un oppidum ibérico presents the results of archaeological work which has been carried out since 1997 in so-called Sector III of the Alarcos site, located on a hill next to the Guadiana river, a few kilometres from Ciudad Real. These archaeological campaigns have made it possible to obtain essential information to understand the communities that, from the end of the Bronze Age to the end of the Iron Age, inhabited this large town and its surrounding area. An interesting set of structures and other evidence of material culture have been recovered, which allow us to characterize the daily activities of people between the 10th-11th century BC and, in addition, they enable us to understand the paleoenvironment of this territory and the nature of the economy and the food transformation activities of these protohistoric populations. The use of this territory has been determined over the centuries, being originally a residential area which later, in Iberian times, assumed economic functionality, as it was intended for grain storage, grinding and cooking food. The documentation of a wide and varied repertoire of ceramic materials and an interesting set of foreign ceramics corroborates the dynamism this settlement achieved, during both the Pre-Iberian period and the full Iberian period.

    Description: La Biotecnología Ambiental emplea el uso de organismos para la prevención, monitoreo y remediación de los ecosistemas, al mismo tiempo permite la generación de bioproductos y energía limpia. El libro consistió en tres capítulos, en el primero se establece los fundamentos de la Biotecnología Ambiental y sus aplicaciones en entornos terrestre, acuático y aéreo; además, se presentan herramientas aplicadas como los biosensores en el monitoreo ambiental, la fitorremediación en varios contextos de América Latina y el fortalecimiento de la agricultura sustentable. En el segundo capítulo se describe la importancia de un estudio bibliométrico y el enfoque para las diversas investigaciones, se detalla un manual de uso, que permite su replicabilidad en otros contextos. Además de presentar un caso de estudio aplicado al tema central de este libro, que sistematiza los temas más estudiados, las tendencias, revistas y países con mayores contribuciones. En el tercer capítulo se presentan varias prácticas de laboratorio y una sección de preguntas, que pueden ser empleadas en otras instituciones educativas o de manera autónoma. En conclusión, los capítulos son complementarios entre sí, facilitando la comprensión e interés del lector. El área de mayor relevancia corresponde a la biorremediación en suelos contaminados por hidrocarburos y metales pesados, los grupos más frecuentes en la revisión fueron hongos, cianobacterias y organismos genéticamente modificados.     Description: The presence of robots in agriculture has grown significantly in recent years, overcoming some of the challenges and complications of this field. This chapter aims to collect a complete and recent state of the art about the application of robots in agriculture. The work addresses this topic from two perspectives. On the one hand, it involves the disciplines that lead the automation of agriculture, such as precision agriculture and greenhouse farming, and collects the proposals for automatizing tasks like planting and harvesting, environmental monitoring and crop inspection and treatment. On the other hand, it compiles and analyses the robots that are proposed to accomplish these tasks: e.g. manipulators, ground vehicles and aerial robots. Additionally, the chapter reports with more detail some practical experiences about the application of robot teams to crop inspection and treatment in outdoor agriculture, as well as to environmental monitoring in greenhouse farming.
