    Notes: We prove using the Faedo-Galerkin method the existence of a generalized solution of an initial-boundary value problem for the non-linear evolution equation0 ≤ Q ≤ 2, in a cylinder QT = Ω × (0, T), where T u = yuxx + uyy is the Tricomi operator and l(u) a special differential operator of first order. We then show that the approximate generalized solution of problem (*) converges to the approximate generalized solution of the corresponding stationary boundary value problem as t → ∞.

    Notes: We consider the equation of mixed type (k(y) ⋛ 0 whenever y ⋛ 0) in a region G which is bounded by the curves: A piecewise smooth curve Γ lying in the half-plane y 〉 0 which intersects the line y = 0 at the points A(-1, 0) and B(0, 0). For y 〈 0 by a piecewise smooth curve Γ through A which meets the characteristic of (1) issued from B at the point P and the curve Γ which consists of the portion PB of the characteristic through B. We obtain sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution of the problem L[u] = f, dnu: = k(y)uxdy - uydx|γ0 = = Ψ(s) for a “general” function k(y), when r(x, y) is not necessarily zero and Γ1 is of a more general form then in the papers of V. P. Egorov [6], [7].

    Notes: In [13] we extended the analysis of Ciarlet and Destuynder [5] to the clamped orthotropic plate. For the present paper we shall apply these methods to the orthotropic plate under traction. In particular, we shall be considering the type of problem posed in Friedrichs and Dressler [10] for the isotropic plate and make use of the fact that the variational problem will split just as was the case for the partial differential equation formulation. With the present approach we shall be able to produce a proper convergence analysis for the formal asymptotics used in Friedrichs and Dressler.

    Notes: The transverse NMR relaxation times of hydrogen nuclei of water absorbed in white spruce sapwood [Picea glauca (Meunch) Voss] were measured for moisture contents in the range from 5 to 176%. The spin echo amplitudes resulting from the Carr-Purcell sequence decay nonexponentially suggesting the possibility of at least two different relaxation times for water in wood. A simplified structural model of the wood-water mixture is used to estimate the rates of chemical exchange at room temperature of hydrogen nuclei between various sites in the system. The high-resolution NMR line shape is discussed briefly in terms of this proposed model.

    Notes: Ethene was copolymerized with 1-octene using homogeneous MAO-activated rac-Me2Si(2-MeBenz[e]Ind)2ZrCl2 at constant ethene concentration with temperature varying between 0 and 60°C to determine a temperature dependence of copolymerization parameters. At constant 1-octene and ethene concentration (constant ethene/1-octene feed molar ratio) 1-octene incorporation decreased with increasing temperature. Furthermore, when ethene/1-octene molar ratio was varied by varying the temperature keeping 1-octene concentration and ethene pressure constant, increasing temperature accounted for lower molecular masses without affecting 1-octene incorporation. An explanation for the observed temperature dependence of the copolymerization parameters is presented, considering the solution-enthalpy of the gaseous ethene in the solvent. In all cases amorphous poly(ethene-co-1-octene) with 1-octene content varying between 20 and 40 mol % was obtained. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Tricarbonylchromium complexes 1 react with monosubstituted malonic acid esters 2 in DMSO at room temperature in the presence of KOtBu to give the complexes 3. After oxidative demetalation, the appropriate aryl derivatives 4 are obtained in moderate to good overall yields. Diastereoselective arylations of chirally modified malonates such as 5a-c were studied. The stereoselectivity was highest for the products 6c/6c′ (80:20) with (-)-8-phenylmenthol as alcohol component in the malonate 5.
