Notes: Abstract Ultrashort laser pulses offer new jump in information and communication technology. Especially semiconductor laser based ultrafast photonic devices and systems are promising. We review our new approaches for femtosecond pulse generation, and thin film technology for broad band semiconductor optical amplifiers.

Notes: Abstract Taking into account stellar velocity dispersion and galactic thickness in a self-consistent manner, we deduce dynamical properties for twenty-three flat galaxies from a rotation curve analysis using four adjustable parameters, which characterize the mass distribution in the spherical and the flattened parts of the galaxies. The present description of flat galaxies assumes an isotropic ‘stellar pressure’ as a simplest starting point, but the velocity distribution for a majority of the low-velocity stars still conforms to the classical stellar dynamics. Our statistical analysis indicates thatQ ∝M α andE ∝M β with α=1.9 and β=1.5, whereQ, E and ℳ are the total angular momentum, the total energy and the total mass of the galaxies, respectively. Among the structural parameters of the galaxies, an average dependence of the intrinsic flatness on the configuration energy defined by 4E/(G 2 M 5/Q 2) has also been inferred from the present models for the galaxies. The three statistical relationships we obtained indicate that the dynamical structure of the flat galaxies appear to be determined only by one parameter — the total mass. In the framework of the present description of flat galaxies, no distinct indication was found that the morphological types depend statistically on the dynamical parameters. In accordance with these statistical results, a probable primeval state of galaxies is examined and an evolutionary course of galaxies is also discussed.

Notes: Summary Immunohistochemical examination was performed of serial sections of 24 normal human adult cervical tissues and 53 human cervical carcinomas including 36 cases with lymph node metastasis. For this investigation, monoclonal antibodies directed to Lewis-X, Lewis-Y, sialyl-dimeric Lewis-X (SDLX), sialyl-Tn (STn) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were used. STn and CEA antigens were expressed very weakly in the normal cervical epithelium but strongly in the cancer cells, indicating the antigens to be oncogenic antigens of cervical squamous cell carcinoma. No significant difference in immunoreactivity was observed between primary and metastatic lesions of carcinoma or between primary lesions with and without metastasis. However, the expression patterns of STn and Lewis-Y antigens were quite different between primary lesions and metastatic lesions. In primary lesions the cancer cell nests tended to be stained centrally, but in metastatic lesions the cancer cell nests tended to be stained peripherally. This finding may reflect an important role of these carbohydrate chains in the process of metastasis of cervical squamous cell carcinoma to regional lymph nodes.

Notes: Abstract Migratory marine turtles are extremely difficult to track between their feeding and nesting areas, and the link between juvenile and adult habitats is generally unknown. To assess the composition of a feeding ground (FG) population of juvenile green turtles (Cheloniamydas Linnaeus), mitochondrial DNA control region sequences were examined in 80 post-pelagic individuals (straight carapace length = 31 to 67 cm) sampled in September 1992 from Great Inagua, Bahamas, and compared to those of 194 individuals from nine Atlantic and Mediterranean nesting colonies. Evidence from genetic markers, haplotype frequencies, and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses are concordant in indicating that multiple colonies contribute to the Bahamian FG population. ML analyses suggested that most Bahamian FG juveniles originated in the western (79.5%) and eastern (12.9%) Caribbean regions, and these proportions are roughly comparable to the size of candidate rookeries. These data support a life-cycle model in which individuals become pooled in post-hatchling (pelagic) and juvenile (benthic) habitats as a consequence of ocean currents and movement among FGs. A substantial harvest of immature turtles on their feeding pastures will influence the reproductive success of contributing nesting populations over a wide geographic scale.

Notes: Abstract The proper motion in galactic latitude of O-B stars enables us to detect the kinematic behaviour of an optical counterpart of the large-scale warp of the HI gas layer in our Galaxy. A selected set of the proper motions of about 350 O-B stars within 3kpc from the sun (R0=8.5kpc) is analyzed on the proper motion systems of N30, FK4, and FK5. A remarkable differece in the kinematic behaviour of the warp appears between the old systems (N30 and FK4) and FK5-system. On the old systems, the O-B stars in the belt 8.5kpc≤R〈9.5kpc exhibit a systematic z-motion upward from the galactic plane forl≤180° and downward forl〉180° with the mean proper motions of about ±0".4/century, respectively. On the other hand, the results on the FK5-system show no meaningful systematic z-motion, even though the O-B star layer exterior to the solar circle is inclined (∼3°) with respect to the galactic plane. These findings can neither be inferred from the model of the oblique material flow nor from the concepts of the precessional stellar rings and of the bending oscillation of a stellar disk. The remarkable difference in the kinematic behaviour of the warp, appearing between the old and new systems, is caused mainly by the conversion of the proper motions on the old systems into those on the J2000.0 frame. The conversion near the galactic plane is given by µb(FK4(J2000.0))−µb(FK4)∼−0”.50 sinl/century. The implication of this relation is discussed in connection with the warping motion of stars detected here.

Notes: Abstract In the automated(computerized) meridian circle, the graduation error can be calibrated in a short time: a complete determination of the graduation error takes a few days, while a coarse measurement of the first ten dominant Fourier components of the graduation error takes only 15 min. Thus, we can monitor the annual and diurnal variations of the graduation. In our regular observations, the annual variation can be thus corrected for. This kind of correction seems to be necessary, judging from the observing accuracy of modern meridian observations. On the other hand, we could not detect a change of the graduation within one clear day as far as the dominant components of the diameter error are concerned. In our case we can therefore assume the graduation error to be constant within one day.
