Notes: Abstract This paper proposes and analyses a new and efficient multistage switching node architecture for high‐speed communication networks such as Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (BISDNs). The proposed architecture has several superior features as compared to the existing switching nodes based on Banyan architecture. The architecture uses a reduced number of stages in an attempt to reduce the delay. Each switching element has its own input buffer and that reduces the blocking probability. Performance of the proposed architecture has been evaluated using simulation. The performance results are presented in the form of utilization, and delay, with different buffer sizes. The results show that the proposed architecture provides better performance in terms of reduced delay and higher throughput.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the design and construction of a concrete strength ultrasonic digital meter. The method depends on the transmission and reception of two ultrasonic sinusoidal signals. These two signals are so processed so as to yield a digital output number representative of the speed of propagation through the concrete specimen. This velocity figure can be related to the applications on finding the concrete crush strength, concrete crack depth, as well as the concrete behavior with electrical curing temperature. The electronic system employs Complementary-Oxide Semiconductor logic circuits and hybrid conversion circuits. It consumes such a little power, which makes such a design transportable and hence a battery operated device.

Notes: Abstract This paper introduces the design and construction of an electronic hybrid signal processing meter that develops an output voltage proportional to the depth of crack in a concrete specimen. The circuit employs linear and digital circuits that form a special nonlinear ADC and counting scheme.

Notes: Abstract This work investigates the possibility of utilizing the µp-8085 and its application to concrete crack depth evaluation. For the purpose of the nondestructive testing, ultrasonic pulses are of importance in assessing the quality of concrete as well as flaw detection and measurement. This will be useful in repairing concrete columns.

Notes: Abstract Magic angle spinning29Si NMR presents a rapid qualitative method of assessing the degree of dealumination of sodium mordenite modified by acid leaching and heat treatment. A quantitative determination of the29Si coordination sphere is hampered by the overlap of chemical shift ranges for Si−O−Al and Si−O−H species. MAS27Al NMR indicates the presence of octahedrally coordinated Al in interstitial sites in all treated samples. On treating mordenite samples at high temperatures (∼700°C) much of the Al becomes invisible to the NMR experiment because of its location in sites of low symmetry and large quadrupole coupling constant.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the contents of toxic and essential trace element such as As, Hg, Se and Zn by neutron activation analysis in coastal fishes consumed by the general population of Malaysia. The mean values of the elements analysed expressed in mg/kg fresh weight ranged 1.42–5.61, 0.06–0.42, 4.2–20.6, 0.41–1.28 for As, Hg, Zn and Se, respectively. The maximum permissible limit for As in food was set at 1.0 mg/kg under the Malaysian Food Regulations. Our results showed that consumption of coastal fishes is not permitted under the regulations, while the levels of Hg, Se and Zn were within the permissible limits. The daily dietary intake of As and Hg at 400 μg and 30μg respectively are still within the tolerance levels.

Notes: Abstract The contents of mercury and organic mercury in various types of seafood from various location in Malaysia were determined by neutron activation analysis. Total mercury was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) whilst organic mercury was determined by INAA after chemical separation. Samples were digested in acid media and into the solution was added copper ion and KBr to release organic mercury compound from sulphur component of the tissue. The organic mercury was then extracted into toluene and then treated with cysteine paper to convert the compound into sub-organo-mercury from. The paper was then transferred into polyethylene vials and irradiated in the MINT TRIGA Reactor. Analytical results of organic mercury in Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta), Spanish mackerel (Scomberomurus commersoni), shrimp (Peneaus sp.), squid (Loligo sp.) and cockle (Anadara granosa) is in the range of 45%–94% of the total mercury.

Notes: Abstract Elemental content of twenty medicinal plants used as tonic and for treatment of diabetes and simusitis were determined by INAA and XRF. Elemental determination was carried out in the raw samples, residues after boiling and the water soluble fractions. Samples were irradiated in TRIGA MkII reactor and counted using HPGe detector coupled to Personal Computer Analyzer (PCA) system. Bowen's Kale, NBS Pine Needles, NBS Citrus Leaves SRM were analysed to check the accuracy of the techniques used. Twenty elements were determined by both NAA and XRF. Arsenic was only detected inLabisia pothoina andDracontomelon dao with a concentrations of 0.40 mg/kg and 0.60 mg/kg respectively. Antimony was found in eleven samples with a concentration of 〈0.20 mg/kg. Al, Br, Ca, Cl, K, Mn, Na and Rb were detected in all samples whereas Mg and Zn were present in all samples exceptCinnamomum sp. Highest concentration of Br (190 mg/kg), Cl (11805 mg/kg), Co (0.50 mg/kg), Fe (1642 mg/kg), K (36788 mg/kg), Mn (325 mg/kg), Na (126 mg/kg), Rb (197 mg/kg), Sc (0.18 mg/kg) and Zn (3551 mg/kg) were observed in the tuber ofLasia aculeata. Less than 70% and 50% of the elements contained inCallicarpa longifolia andEurycoma longifolia were obtained respectively from water by boiling.
