Notes: Abstract Anin situ measurement of the lunar neutron density from 20 to 400 g cm−2 depth below the lunar surface was made by the Apollo 17 Lunar Neutron Probe Experiment (LNPE) using particle tracks produced by the10B (n,α)7Li reaction. Both the absolute magnitude and the depth profile of the neutron density are in good agreement with theoretical calculations by Lingenfelter, Canfield, and Hampel. However, relatively small deviations between experiment and theory in the effect of Cd absorption on the neutron density and in the relative149Sm to157Gd capture rates reported previously (Russet al., 1972) imply that the true lunar157Gd capture rate is about one half of that calculated theoretically.

Notes: Summary Purified haptoglobin partially inhibits the activity of a lysosomal thiol proteinase, cathepsin B. This inhibition is reversible in the presence of monospecific antiserum to haptoglobin.

Notes: Summary The metabolism of methaqualone to the glucuronides of 5 C-monohydroxy metabolites and to the N-oxide has been studied in 2 groups of healthy young adults phenotyped as extensive and poor metabolisers of debrisoquine. No significant interphenotype differences were observed with respect to the excretion of any of the 6 metabolites. It is probable that the genetic regulation of the pathways leading to these metabolites is at a locus other than that which is responsible for the regulation of the oxidation of debrisoquine, guanoxan, phenacetin, phenytoin and sparteine.

Notes: Summary The urinary excretion of fiveC-monohydroxy metabolites and theN-oxide metabolite of methaqualone in the 24h period immediately after oral dosing with 250 mg methaqualone (Melsed) has been measured in nineteen healthy adults (13 male, 6 female) to assess interindividual variations and in five adults (3 male, 2 female) on five separate occasions to assess intraindividual variations. The overall importance of the six metabolites was 4′-hydroxy $$ 〉 〉 $$ N-oxide $$ 〉 〉 $$ 2′-hydroxymethyl 〉 3′-hydroxy 〉 6-hydroxy = 2-hydroxymethyl. Variations in this order both within the 24h period and within each of the three eight-hour periods constituting the 24 hours were minor and variations in the absolute amount of each metabolite excreted ranged from two to three-fold. Intraindividual variations were generally smaller than interindividual variations and for each individual the pattern of metabolism was similar on the five occasions. There is evidence that theC-oxidation of methaqualone may be more sensitive to cyclical variations in hormone levels than isN-oxidation.

Notes: Summary The urinary excretion of fiveC-monohydroxy metabolites and theN-oxide of methaqualone has been measured in a group of eleven geriatric patients aged 71–90 years. The total excretion of the six metabolites in 24 h after the oral administration of a single dose was approximately one-half of that in a group of young healthy adults. The relative importance of the six metabolites was 4′-hydroxy ≫N-oxide〉 2′-hydroxymethyl = 3′-hydroxy 〉 6-hydroxy = 2-hydroxymethyl which was the same order as that in young adults. The ratio ofC-toN-oxidation was also the same in the two groups. There was no impairment of conjugation of theC-hydroxy metabolites with glucuronic acid in the geriatric group but there was greater interindividual variation in metabolite excretion. There was also evidence for delayed metabolism in the geriatric patients.

Notes: Summary The metabolism of methaqualone has been studied in three patients with secondary carcinoma of the liver and two with biliary cirrhosis. The urinary excretion of fiveC-monohydroxy metabolites and theN-oxide was studies in the 24 h period immediately after oral dosing with 250 mg methaqualone (Melsed). In both patients with biliary cirrhosis and one with primary carcinoma of the bile duct or pancreas with secondaries in the liver the pattern of metabolites was normal. In a patient with oat cell carcinoma with secondaries in the liver some metabolite patterns were disturbed and increased metabolite excretion occurred. A patient with primary carcinoma of the breast with secondaries in the liver gave a completely abnormal metabolite pattern.

Notes: Abstract Phase behaviour over regions of the ternary system Na2O/B2O3/Nb2O5 has been explored. Liquidus temperatures and the stability regions of primary phases have been determined over selected composition ranges by high temperature microscopy. Crystallisation processes in melts and corresponding glasses have been followed using both conventional methods of thermal analysis and newly developed micro techniques combined with hot stage microscopy. An electron microscope has been employed to follow changes in the microstructure of quenched glasses after controlled heat treatments. It has been shown that the system contains a liquid immiscibility gap, and some attention is given in the discussions to the influence that can be assigned to cations in determining the extent of such gaps and general structural relationships in borate/oxide systems.

Notes: Abstract Allthough small business accounts for over 90% of businesses in U.K. and indeed elsewhere, they remain the largely uncharted area of ethics. There has not been any research based on the perspective of small business owners, to define what echical delemmas they face and how, if at all, they resolve them. This paper explores ethics from the perspective of small business owner, using focus groups and reports on four clearly identifiable themes of ethical delemmas; entrepreneurial activity itself, conflicts of personal values with business needs, social responsibility and the impact of owners' personality on business ethics. The mechanisms for resolving ethical dilemmas is not at all clear, as there appears to be a web of filters which are used in an inter-connected way. However a common starting point for resolving an ethical delemma which involves others is based on identifying who it is (e.g., a friend or institution) and the quality of the relationship with that person. The research yielded a rich source of material on business ethics and it is clear that future researchers must focus on this sector if business ethics is to make significant advances.
