    Description: Animals that lived at high altitudes have evolved distinctive physiological traits that allow them to tolerate extreme high-altitude environment, including higher hemoglobin concentration, increased oxygen saturation of blood and a high energy metabolism. Although previous investigations performed plenty of comparison between high- and low-altitude mammals at the level of morphology, physiology and genomics, mechanism underlying high-altitude adaptation remains largely unknown. Few studies provided comparative analyses in high-altitude adaptation, such as parallel analysis in multiple species. In this study, we generated high-quality small RNA sequencing data for six tissues (heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney and muscle) from low- and high-altitude populations of four typical livestock animals, and identified comparable numbers of miRNAs in each species. This dataset will provide valuable information for understanding the molecular mechanism of high-altitude adaptation in vertebrates.

    Notes: Abstract The doctoral dissertation is viewed as the capstone to the doctoralprogram. This study reviews the research topics and methodologies ofmanagement doctoral dissertations from 1988 to 1994 in Taiwan. The results ofthe qualitative analysis of the 120 dissertations are reported as follows:(1) financial management attracted the greatest share of the attention of thedoctoral students, followed by information management; (2) over half of thedissertations were discipline based with mathematics, psychology, economics,and computer science being the most common disciplines; (3) over half of thedissertations were predominantly causal; (4) in the case of empiricaldissertations, survey methods were mostly used, while mathematical modelingwas frequently applied in the case of the non-empirical studies; and (5) mostof the empirical studies involved the information industry. In addition,future directions for management doctoral research are also provided.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of disciplinary differences onself-perceived gains in critical thinking andcommunication skills were examined in terms of studentbackground characteristics, experiences in the major,and college experience variables. Academicdisciplines were categorized according to Biglan's(1973a) classification of single- and multiple-paradigmdisciplines. Although multigroup structural equationmodeling showed no differences between self-perceivedgains for single- and multiple-paradigm disciplines, theproposed theoretical model accounted for 13.5% and 25.3%of the variance in self-perceived gains in critical thinking and communication skills,respectively. The variable most highly associated withself-perceived gains was the quality of lower-divisioncourses in the major.

    Notes: Abstract In attempting to develop a predictive model of student attachment to the university, this research concentrates on four variable sets: perceptions of university goals, perceptions of university academic climate, perceptions of university academic environment, and feelings of academic alienation. Using a sample of 460 university students, multiple discriminant analytic results indicate that of these four variable sets, perceptions of the academic climate and feelings of academic alienation exert more influence on students' attachment to the university than do perceptions of university goals and perceptions of the academic environment. These findings are discussed within the context of a model of the university student operating very much as a democratic citizen in the university political system.

    Notes: Abstract Using a random sample of 460 Southern Illinois University at Carbondale students surveyed in 1973, four questions are investigated regarding a modified version of the Clark-Trow student typology: (1) What is the distribution of the four Clark-Trow student types among this sample of post-activist students? (2) What are the intercorrelations between the four student types? (3) To what degree are students' perceptions of the prevailing student type at the university related to their typological self-descriptions? (4) What antecedent factors affect student self-classifications on the four types? The results of this research are discussed in conjunction with recent findings concerning the association between students' academic orientations and their perceptions and evaluations of the university environment.

    Notes: Abstract Deep and rapid changes in a “high-tech” society exceed the ability of formal educational systems to respond to new learning needs. Therefore, the future of post secondary education will increasingly include emphases on self-directed learning skills and activities. Despite recognition of such a trend, knowledge of self-directed learning and self-directed learners is in its infancy. This study of self-directed learning and performance was designed to determine the relationship of self-directed learning readiness and performance in an occupational setting. Business, government and industry are expected to depend heavily upon self-directed learning in the future. Because of the increasingly close relationship between education and these sectors of the economy, educators should have a keen interest in this kind of research. The sample included 753 individuals selected from the population of a large American utility company: 421 were managers and 318 were non-managers; 14 subjects did not define their occupational status. Subjects provided information on their management level, sex, age, education, race, job performance rating, creativity required on their jobs, problem-solving ability needed in their jobs and degree of change in their work. Nine hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. Selected conclusions are as follows: (a) outstanding performers in jobs requiring a very high level of creativity had significantly higher SDLRS scores than others; (b) outstanding performers in jobs requiring a very high degree of problem-solving skill had significantly higher SDLRS scores than others; and (c) individuals who have completed higher levels of education tend to have higher SDLRS scores.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents an examination of national survey data on the graduation rates of young people who enter higher education in Australia. Two cohorts of young people were surveyed – those born in 1961 and those born in 1965. Of interest is the influence of gender and of selected social and economic background characteristics on graduation rates. The results for both cohorts provide further evidence of the gains made by young females during the 1980s in terms of educational participation and attainment. The results for the first cohort show also there were some signs of lower graduation rates being associated with socioeconomic disadvantage, at least as indicated by parent'`s occupational status and family wealth. For the second cohort, however, there was little evidence of any effect in the same direction. This suggests that attempts to deal with equity which have focussed on performance within higher education have either been quite effective or might be better directed towards the selection processes which lead to higher education.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of ideological self-identification on students' perceptions and evaluations of three academic stimulus objects is investigated. Sociopolitical ideologies do structure perceptions of the academic milieu; conservative and liberal students view academic objects differently and do not use the same dimensions when describing academic objects. In predicting students' political identifications stimulus objects as well as perceptual dimensions must be taken into account.
