Abstract Using a random sample of 460 Southern Illinois University at Carbondale students surveyed in 1973, four questions are investigated regarding a modified version of the Clark-Trow student typology: (1) What is the distribution of the four Clark-Trow student types among this sample of post-activist students? (2) What are the intercorrelations between the four student types? (3) To what degree are students' perceptions of the prevailing student type at the university related to their typological self-descriptions? (4) What antecedent factors affect student self-classifications on the four types? The results of this research are discussed in conjunction with recent findings concerning the association between students' academic orientations and their perceptions and evaluations of the university environment.
