Beschreibung: The regional hazard mapping for the whole Eastern Asia was coordinated by the SSB Regional Centre in Beijing, originating from the expansion of the test area initially established in the border region of China-India-Nepal-Myanmar- Bangla Dash, in coordination with the other Regional Centres (JIPE, Moscow, and AGSO, Canberra) and with the direct assistance of the USGS. All Eastern Asian countries have participated directly in this regional effort, with the addition of Japan, for which an existing national hazard map was incorporated. The regional hazard depicts the expected peak ground acceleration with 10% exceedance probability in 50 years.

Beschreibung: This paper presents the results of an exercise carried out under GSHAP, over India and adjoining regions bound by 0°N-40°N and 65°E-100°E. A working catalogue of main shocks was prepared by merging the local catalogues with the NOAA catalogue, and removing duplicates, aftershocks and earthquakes without any magnitude. Eighty six potential seismic source zones were delineated based on the major tectonic features and seismicity trends. Using the probabilistic hazard assessment approach of McGuire, adopted by GSHAP, the Peak Ground Accelerations (PGA) were computed for 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years, at locations defined by a grid of 0.5° x 0.5°. Since no reliable estimates of attenuation values are available for the Indian region, the attenuation relation of Joyner and Boore (1981) was used. The PGA values over the grid points were contoured to obtain a seismic hazard map. The hazard map depicts that a majority of the Northern Indian plate boundary region and the Tibetan plateau region have hazard level of the order of 0.25 g with prominent highs of the order of 0.35-0.4 g in the seismically more active zones like the Burmese arc, Northeastern India and Hindukush region. In the Indian shield, the regional seismic hazard, covering a major area, is of the order of 0.05-0.1 g whereas some areas like Koyna depict hazard to the level of 0.2 g. The present map can be converted into a conventional seismic zoning map having four zones with zone factors of 0.1 g, 0.2 g, 0.3 g and 0.4 g respectively.

Beschreibung: Due to seasonal or interannual variability, the relevance of hydrological processes and of the associated model parameters can vary significantly throughout the simulation period. To achieve accurately identified model parameters, temporal variations in parameter dominance should be taken into account. This is not achieved if performance criteria are applied to the entire model output time series. Even when using complementary performance criteria, it is often only possible to identify some of the model parameters precisely. We present an innovative approach to improve parameter identifiability that exploits the information available regarding temporal variations in parameter dominance. Using daily parameter sensitivity time series, we construct a set of sensitivity-weighted performance criteria, one for each parameter, whereby periods of higher dominance of a model parameter and its corresponding process are assigned higher weights in the calculation of the associated performance criterion. These criteria are used to impose constraints on parameter values. We demonstrate this approach by constraining 12 model parameters for three catchments and examine ensemble hydrological simulations generated using these constrained parameter sets. The sensitivity-weighted approach improves in particular the identifiability for parameters whose corresponding processes are dominant only for short periods of time or have strong seasonal patterns. This results overall in slight improvement of model performance for a set of 10 contrasting performance criteria. We conclude that the sensitivity-weighted approach improves the extraction of hydrologically relevant information from data, thereby resulting in improved parameter identifiability and better representation of model parameters.

Notizen: Fe/Ni and Fe/Co multilayers (ML) have been deposited by dc triode sputtering, with a layer thickness (t) in the range 1–10 nm. For t(approximately-greater-than)4 nm both metals are in crystalline form (bcc Fe, fcc Ni, hcp Co). For t〈2 nm one has a single-phase structure (fcc in Fe/Ni ML, bcc in Fe/Co ML) which can be explained by assuming the presence of a 1-nm-thick mixed layer at the interfaces. This interfacial mixing affects the magnetic properties. The basic difference between the two systems is the fact that while Fe-Ni interfacial alloys are magnetically soft those of Fe-Co are hard which leads to different magnetic behavior. Furthermore, the Fe layers are better crystallized in our samples than those prepared by rf magnetron or ion-beam sputtering.

Notizen: Double-layer and multiple-layer thin films of permalloy with carbon as a intermediate nonmagnetic spacer were prepared by low-energy dc triode sputtering. Coupling between the two layers of the double films is investigated on a series of samples with a fixed thickness of permalloy layers (dp = 300 A(ring)) and thickness of the carbon layer dc, varying from 0 to 25 A(ring). Thickness dc = 10 A(ring) is found to be the limiting value for the carbon layer to be continuous and 20 A(ring) for domain structures in the two magnetic films to decouple. Saturation magnetization Ms, uniaxial anisotropy field, Hk, and coercive force Hc of multilayers with dc = 10 A(ring) and dp from 50 to 600 A(ring) (number of magnetic layers from 12 down to 1) are measured and found consistent with earlier results by other authors. Multiple domain walls in the multilayers are investigated by Lorentz electron microscopy.

Notizen: The micromagnetic structure of the walls in two-layer laminated films has been investigated using the high-resolution longitudinal Kerr effect. Superimposed Bloch lines of opposite type (cross or circular) in the two magnetic layers are observed and interpreted. The mixed type of walls with twin and superimposed Néel segments is discussed. The magnetization distribution at crossing points between the twin walls nucleated in a hard axis field is deduced from the Kerr effect contrast of the walls and quasiwalls. The appearance of superimposed 360° walls and segments in 90° walls in samples with biaxial anisotropy is shown.

Notizen: The metal-insulator or metal-amorphous semiconductor blocking contact is still not well understood. Here, the intimate metal-insulator and metal-oxide-insulator contact are discussed. Further, the steady-state characteristics of metal-oxide-insulator-metal structures are also discussed. Oxide is an insulator with wider energy band gap (about 50 A(ring) thick). A uniform energetic distribution of impurities is considered in addition to impurities at a single energy level inside the surface charge region at the oxide-insulator interface. Analytical expressions are presented for electrical potential, field, thickness of the depletion region, capacitance, and charge accumulated in the surface charge region. The electrical characteristics are compared with reference to relative densities of two types of impurities. ln I is proportional to the square root of applied potential if energetically distributed impurities are relatively important. However, distribution of the electrical potential is quite complicated. In general energetically distributed impurities can considerably change the electrical characteristics of these structures.
