Notes: Flexible fixturing is an important issue in manufacturing, where a single set of fixtures are used for locating and holding a variety of workpieces. Flexible fixturing with phase-change materials involves the use of functional materials which change the status from liquid to solid under certain conditions. The workpiece is located in the liquid fixture material and held firmly when the material is changed into the solid state. Therefore, the material strength in the solid state is crucial for a successful application to production. This paper presents an experimental study of magnetorheological (MR) fluid material. With the application of a compression technique, a thick column structure is formed and enhanced. Hence, a high shear strength of the MR fluid in solid status is achieved. Experimental results are reported in this paper. Further application of this technique is under development for flexible fixturing in industrial applications.

Notes: Abstract  The fabrication of high aspect ratio microstructures using the X-ray lithography and electroplating step of the LIGA process requires, that the metal layer on the substrate (plating base) enables a flawless resist adhesion and provides a high conductivity for the following electroplating process. In addition, a flawless metal adhesion after electroplating has to be ensured. Typically metal layers of titanium, but also of copper and gold are used. In case of higher structures, fluorescence radiation generated in the metal layer during exposure reduces the bond strength between the resist and the adhesion layer [7]. Since the fluorescence probability decreases with a decreasing atomic number, the suitability of conductive carbon as the plating base was investigated and compared to results achieved with titanium. The resist adhesion was increased tremendously on the carbon layer but the metal adhesion is insufficient. Therefore, platinum islands were deposited on the conductive carbon to facilitate good metal adhesion. The resulting resist adhesion was still superior compared to titanium. In addition, metal adhesion was achieved on these layers.

Notes: Abstract Sex pheromone behavioral responses were analyzed in a flight tunnel with European corn borer,Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), males from three distinct populations. Males from a bivoltine and a univoltine biotype using a 97.8∶2.2 blend (Z strains) of (Z)- and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate were assayed with treatments containing 0, 0.5, 1, and 3% of theE isomer. Males from neither population oriented in the plume to the 100%Z treatment, but bivoltine males oriented and flew to the source to the other three treatments, whereas univoltine males oriented and flew to the source only to the 1 % and 3 %E treatments. Males from a bivoltine biotype using a 1∶99 blend ofZ/E isomers (E strain) were assayed with sources containing 0, 0.5, 1, and 3% of theZ isomer. Males did not orient to the 0%Z source, but oriented and flew to the source to the other three treatments. In addition to using opposite geometric isomers for the main pheromone component, the bivoltineE strain differed from the bivoltineZ strain by producing and responding better to 1 % of the minor component and by storing 3 times more pheromone in the female glands. Contrary to previous reports, the blend of two pheromone components is significantly better than the main component alone in eliciting oriented flight and close-range behavior with males from all three populations of European corn borer.

Notes: Abstract Phase transformations in solution treated and quenched Ti-(13-26) Nb-(22-38) Ta (wt.%) and Ti-(13-35.5) Nb-(5-22) Ta-(4-7.2) Zr alloys have been studied. It has been observed that phase transformations in these alloys are sensitive to both composition and cooling rate. In ternary alloys, water and oil quenching resulted in the formation of orthorhombic martensite (α′′) in a retained β + ωathermal matrix, whereas slower cooling showed evidence of fine α and ωisothermal formation within the β matrix. Increase of Nb + Ta content decreases the volume percentage of martensite. Moreover, addition of Zr stabilized the β phase, lowered the martensite start temperature and suppressed ω formation. Finally, dynamic moduli of air cooled quaternary alloys showed that the modulus was sensitive to the composition, a minima at Nb/Ta ratio of 12.0 and 5 at% Zr being observed, this minimum in dynamic modulus being consistent with ω phase suppression.

Notes: Abstract The entire gene cluster encoding enzymes involved in biosynthesis of L-tryptophan in the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus kodakaraensis KOD1 has been cloned and sequenced. Seven ORFs, which encode indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthase (trpC), anthranilate phosphoribosyltransferase (trpD), the two subunits of anthranilate synthase (trpEG), phosphoribosyl anthranilate isomerase (trpF) and the two subunits of tryptophan synthase (trpAB), were identified. The gene order is trpCDEGFBA, covering a region of 6045 bp. In order to confirm the function of the gene products, we expressed the first gene, Pk-trpC, in Escherichia coli. The protein product was purified, and was found to show the expected indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthase activity, with a temperature optimum of 85° C. We could clearly identify a single mRNA transcript by Northern analysis using probes in the central and 3′-regions of the gene cluster, indicating that the gene cluster is transcribed as an operon. A significant increase in trp mRNA level was observed in cells grown in medium depleted of L-tryptophan, compared to cells grown in medium supplemented with L-tryptophan, indicating that expression of the gene cluster is regulated at the transcriptional level.

Notes: Abstract INSPEX is a computer-aided knowledge based inspection planning system for preparing inspection plans from CAD toleranced component models of rotational components. To achieve the complete automation of the inspection process, INSPEX has been integrated with CMMs (computer controlled coordinate measuring machines) via DMIS (Dimensional Measuring Interface Specification), where DMIS has been as a data exchange standard. The inspection procedures produced by INSPEX can be automatically converted into DMIS data format file by the DMIS pre-processor described in this paper, which can be fed into any CMMs with a DMIS interface for executing the inspection procedures.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that in the domain of overlapping resonances the Hauser-Feshbach formula can be derived in the framework of the statistical theory of nuclear reactions even when the energy dependence of the characteristic quantities (e.g., level density and widths) is not neglected.

Notes: Abstract A fully quantum-mechanical analysis is presented of the process in which an incident proton excites both a nuclear resonance and, by electron emission, also a hole in theK-shell which then decays by X-ray emission. The ratio of the intensities of the X-rays emitted before and after compound-nucleus decay is calculated (a) for the case of an isolated nuclear resonance, and (b) for strongly overlapping resonances. We show that in both cases the measured quantity is a branching ratio. The influence of the energy-resolution of the detectors, of the energy spread of the incident beam, and of the structure of the wave packets describing the individual particles in the incident beam is discussed.
