Notes: An improved procedure is described for the characterization of solute self-association by sedimentation equilibrium. Whereas previous statistical-mechanical approaches to allowance for the effects of thermodynamic nonideality have entailed tedious iteration because of their specification of activity coefficients in terms of the equilibrium concentrations of all species, such reliance upon knowledge of the solution composition is avoided by the adaptation of an alternative statistical-mechanical formulation [T. L. Hill and Y. D. Chen (1973) Biopolymers, Vol. 12, pp. 1285-1312] in which thermodynamic nonideality is expressed in terms of total solute concentration. The development of an analysis in terms of a relationship with total solute concentration as the experimental variable allows this attribute of the Adams-Fujita approach to be retained without sacrifice of statistical-mechanical rigor. Its use is illustrated by application to Rayleigh interferometric records of sedimentation equilibrium distributions reflecting α-chymotrypsin dimerization and lysozyme self-association. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The structures and relative energies of various isomers of [FeH3(PMe3)4)+ (1), [RuH3(PMe3)4]. (2) and [OsH3(PMe3)4]. (3) have been studies by density functional theory. The stereoisomers considered are derived from a tetrahedral (T), square planar (P), and C2v-butterfly (C) arrangement of the phosphane ligands. For the latter two, classical trihydride (I) and nonclassical hydride/dihydrogen (II) geometries have been considered 1 and 2 prefer coordination mode II, whereas 3 favours coordination mode I. This trend is explained by relativistic effects. For Fe and Os, the C and T type structures are preferred over a P geometry. for Ru, the C and P structures are close in energy, and the T arrangement represents the highest energy isomer.

Description / Table of Contents: Studies of Electron-Depleted Thiocarbonyl Compounds, 1. C-Sulfonylthioformamides and -hydrazidesThe preparation of C-sulfonylthioformamides 3 and C-sulfonylthioformhydrazide 4 is described and discussed. 3 and 4 were characterized spectroscopically, and barriers to rotation around C - N-bonds in 3 and in amides and amidines derived from 3 were determined. The oxidation, reduction, and pyrolysis as well as condensation reactions of 3 were examined.

Notes: The selection of an appropriate control configuration (structure) is the most important decision when designing distillation control systems. The steady state RGA is commonly used in industry for selecting the best structure. One counterexample to the usefulness of this measure is the DB configuration, which has infinite steady state relative gain array (RGA) values, but still good control performance is possible. This is indicated by high-frequency RGA values close to 1. In this paper it is stressed that decisions regarding controller design should be based on the initial response (high-frequency behavior) rather than the steady state.Based on a frequency-dependent RGA analysis and optimal Pl controller designs of four different configurations, the (L/D) (V/B) configuration is found to be the best choice for two-point composition control. The conventional LV configuration performs poorer than the above system, but is preferable if one-point control is used.

Notes: Simple distillation columns with ideal vapor-liquid equilibrium may display multiple steady-state solutions. Two fundamentally different sources for the multiplicity are presented. Both bring about the unexpected result that increasing reflux makes separation worse in the top part of the column. It corresponds to an unstable operating point. The first type of multiplicity is found for columns with mass or volume inputs (e.g., mass reflux and molar boilup). Even for constant molar flows, the transformation from the actual input units to molar units may become singular (corresponding to a pitchfork bifurcation point), resulting in multiple steady-state solutions. The results are highly relevant in practice, as industrial columns usually have inputs on a mass or volume basis. The second type for specifications on a molar basis (e.g., molar reflux and molar boilup) depends on the presence of an energy balance in the model. The multiplicity is caused by interactions between flows and compositions in the column.

Notes: As recently recognized, distillation columns, operating with reflux and boilup as independent inputs, may have multiple steady-state solutions, even in the ideal binary case. Two fundamentally different sources may cause the multiplicity, and in both cases some operating points are found to be unstable. This article provides evidence for the instability and discusses the effect of operating conditions on stability. Increasing the internal flow rates increases the probability of instability; when flows other than reflux and boilup are used as independent inputs, an operating point may become unstable if the level control is not sufficiently tight. In this case, a limit cycle, usually stable, appears as the steady state goes unstable.

Notes: Polycondensation processes include up to three distinct process stages: prepolymerization, polymerization, and finishing. One or more of these stages often have serious reaction rate limitations due to chemical equilibrium and the need to remove a condensate product. The problems arising in each process stage and the methods of designing each stage are unique. This article discusses many of the problems inherent to each process stage and basic design tools useful in designing each process stage. Two process design tools discussed are the mass-transfer potential and pressure-chain length plots. The application of these tools is illustrated through two design examples: nylon-6,6 and poly (ethylene terephthalate) production.

Notes: The entrainer feed used in homogeneous azeotropic distillation provides an extra degree of freedom in the steady-state design compared to simple distillation. In this article, we discuss the control of azeotropic distillation columns in the region close to minimum entrainer feed. Both industrial experience and previous research indicate that this is a difficult task. However, by considering the high-frequency behavior (initial response) of the column, we show that tight and robust control can be obtained with simple single-loop PI controllers. The results depend on the presence of high-frequency phenomena such as flow dynamics.
