    Notes: Abstract Multiplicity distributions in various rapidity intervals for charged particles produced in collisions of 360 GeV/c protons with aluminium (Al) and gold (Au) targets are presented. The data were analysed separately for the forward and backward hemispheres. Each distribution is well described by a negative binomial distribution. The experimental distributions are compared with the predictions of the multichain model calculated by the Monte Carlo program MCMHA in which the intranuclear cascade process is included, and also with the Lund Monte Carlo FRITIOF. The results of MCMHA reproduce quite well the multiplicity distributions for various rapidity intervals.

    Notes: Abstract. For the deposition of cubic boron nitride thin films in Ar–N2–BF3–H2 system by dc jet plasma chemical vapor deposition, the role of dc substrate bias ranging from -70 V to -150 V was investigated. A critical bias voltage was observed for the formation of cBN phase. The cBN content in the film increased with bias voltage and reached a maximum at the bias voltage of -85 V. Increasing the bias voltage further caused a decrease in cBN content and peeling of the films from the substrate. By combining the results of infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, the bias voltage was also found to strongly affect the crystal size, crystal quality and residual stress of the deposited films. A bias voltage a little higher than the critical value was demonstrated to be favorable for the deposition of a high-quality cBN film with large crystal size and low residual stress.

    Notes: Abstract In order to obtain high-level expression of recombinant human neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), we constructed several types of expression plasmids and examined several cell lines for expression of the human NT-3 gene. The highest level production of the recombinant protein was attained in Chinese hamster ovary cells transfected with an expression plasmid that contains a chimera gene encoding the human nerve growth factor (NGF) prepro-region and human NT-3 mature-region under control of a murine leukemia virus-derived long terminal repeat (MuLV-LTR). This cell line can produce more than 1 mg recombinant human NT-3/1 conditioned medium. The recombinant protein was purified to apparent homogeneity with a cation exchange column, a gel filtration column and a reversed-phase HPLC column with a recovery of about 30%. The purified NT-3, at a concentration as low as 0.2 ng/ml, induced neurite out-growth in neurons prepared from 8-day-old chick embryonic dorsal root ganglia; however, it showed little neurotrophic effect on rat PC12 pheochromocytoma cells, which are known to be NGF-responding cells. In addition, this protein promoted colony formation by human peripheral blood lymphocytes in soft agar culture.

    Notes: Abstract Reduced glutathione (GSH) was applied to prevent browning in shoot tip explants of apple (Malus pumila Mill.). Development was compared between shoot tips treated either by (a) dipping into 0.1 mm GSH solution prior to culture (dip treatment), (b) dipping into the GSH solution and transferring to a medium containing 0.1 mm GSH (dip-and-add treatment), or (c) without dipping or culturing with GSH (control). In the dip treatment, 100% of shoot tips developed into normal shoots after 120 days, while the results with the dip-and-add treatment and control were 50 and 40%, respectively. The results show that application of antioxidant GSH in the initial phase of culture promoted the normal development of shoot tips.

    Notes: Summary 1. The pattern of connections between cereal sensory neurons and a single sensory interneuron, the medial giant interneuron (MGI), was examined using intracellular methods. 2. Two types of sound sensitive hairs are located on each cercus. Each type was examined for its ability to excite, or inhibit the MGI. 3. The effect of stimulating a large population of one hair type was examined by blocking movement of all other types, recording intracellularly from MGI, and stimulating the preparation with tones. 4. T-hairs on the ipsilateral cercus powerfully excited MGI initiating a train of action potentials. L-hairs on either cercus weakly excited MGI. T-hairs on the contralateral cercus inhibited MGI. 5. The effect of stimulating individual receptor hairs was examined by blocking the movement of all but a single hair. Intracellular recordings from MGI exhibit subthreshold synaptic potentials when L-or ipsi-T hairs are stimulated. When the hair was removed the potentials disappeared. Ipsilateral T-hairs excite MIG with a high probability (approximately 75%) while ipsilateral L-hairs excite MGI with a lower probability (approximately 50%). 6. Thus the strengths of connection between hair type and MGI can be ranked as follows: Ipsilateral T-hairs provide the strongest excitatory input and therefore determine the overall directional characteristics of MGI. Ipsilateral L-hairs provide weaker, often subthreshold excitatory inputs and contralateral L-hairs provide the weakest excitatory input to MGI. Finally the contralateral T-hairs inhibit MGI.

    Notes: Abstract Pulsing of a microwave discharge is a promising new technique to improve the control of the diamond deposition process. A small amount of argon (5% Ar) was added to the usual feed stock (0.5% methane in hydrogen) to act as an actinometer. Plasma emission was observed during the pulse on-times for pulse repetition rates from 50 Hz to 10 kHz by time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Determined relaxation time constants for atomic hydrogen are on the order of 1 ms. Thus, the atomic hydrogen concentrations do not vary very much at a pulse repetition rate of 20 kHz, whereas at 50 Hz the radical concentrations vary between a saturation value and zero. The saturation value of atomic hydrogen increases with increasing peak power, but mean values are generally lower as in the continuous wave mode with the same average power and decrease with decreasing duty cycles and pulse repetition rates. The results are consistent with deposition experiments.
