Notes: Abstract An approach to structural analysis is presented in which object-oriented data structures make it possible to arrange computational tasks in a unique fashion. A general matrix-free solution algorithm for use with arbitrary assemblages of linearly connected objects is presented, followed by an overview of a prototype structural analysis program built entirely on such an object-oriented data structure. The principal result is due to the flexibility inherent in this type of data structure, which makes it possible to analyze structural models incrementally as they are developed. Although certainly useful in traditional contexts, the parallel nature of the scheme could be particularly powerful in a multiprocessor environment.

Notes: Abstract Near threshold photoproduction ofη-mesons from the proton has been measured at the MAMI accelerator with the TAPS spectrometer. The mass of theη-meson was deduced from the threshold energy forη-photoproduction. The result of m η =(547.12 ± 0.06 ± 0.25) MeV supports the low value of theη-mass reported from a dp →3Heη measurement at SATURNE in 1992. Theη-decay branching ratio Γ3π0/Γγγ was measured to be (0.832±0.005±0.012).

Notes: Abstract High momentum transfer electrodisintegration of polarized and unpolarized deuterium targets,d(e, e′p)n is studied. We show that the importance of final state interactions FSI, occuring when a knocked out nucleon interacts with the other nucleon, depends strongly on the momentum $$\vec p_n $$ of the spectator nucleon. In particular, these FSI occur when the essential contributions to the scattering amplitude arise from internucleon distances ∼1.5 fm. But the absorption of the high momentumγ * may produce a point like configuration, which evolves with time. In this case, the final state interactions probe the point like configuration at the early stage of its evolution. If the point like configuration is still small after propagating about 1.5 fm, the FSI are suppressed. The result is that significant color transparency effects, which can either enhance or suppress computed cross sections, are predicted to occur forQ 2≳4GeV2. We suggest searching for color transparency phenomenon by examining ratios of experimentally measured quantities. Possible theoretical uncertainties of the calculations, including those due to the deuteron wave function and relativistic effects, are found to be small.

Notes: Abstract The total photofission cross section σγ,F for235U and238U has been measured in the energy range 50≤E γ≤800 MeV at the 855 MeV Mainz Microtron MAMI using energy and time tagged photons (Glasgow Tagger) and a 4π arrangement of position sensitive fragment detectors. Besides the absolute photofission cross section σγF , which almost completely exhausts the total photon absorption cross section for these nuclei, fragment mass distributions in this energy domain were determined via time of flight techniques (TOF). The results for the total photofission cross sections σγ,F normalized to the atomic numberA for both isotopes coincide, and agree in theΔ-resonance region, within the systematic errors, with the socalled“Universal Curve” σγ,T /A of the total photon absorption cross section σγ,T . At higher energies the cross sections exhibit a smooth behaviour. In particular, it is shown for the first time that there isno resonance-like shape near the D13 resonance (at ≈710 MeV) as observed for the free proton. This complete suppression of the D13 resonance in complex nuclei is not yet understood on a microscopic level. The fragment mass distributions show a predominantly mass symmetric fission. However, contributions from mass asymmetric fission at some photon energies may give a hint of an increased mass asymmetric fission after the onset of the pion and two pion channels.

Notes: Abstract Pupae of Rhagoletis cerasi (L.) from Austria, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland and Italy were stored at 4° for 155 days and then transferred to eleven constant and four cycling temperature regimes until the flies emerged. No flies emerged in 324 days at 8° constant but mean emergence was 84% for the remaining regimes. Female flies emerged slightly earlier than males and flies from Italy were the last to start emerging. Reduced to a common mean base temperature of 6.8°, temperature sums in day degrees C to 10% emergence of female flies were 331 (Austria), 319 (Czechoslovakia), 359 (Italy) and 321 (Switzerland). The equivalent sums are also given for first, 50% and 90% emergence. When tested with soil temperature data from Switzerland 321 day degrees above 6.8° and 430 day degrees above 5° gave effectively the same estimates for practical forecasting purposes.

Notes: Summary The ecomorphological model which attempts to identify important variation in the total morphology of groups of animals has been used with some success in communities of fishes. The applicability of the model to subsets of the community, such as guilds of ecologically similar species, is uncertain, and the effects of the possible changes in correlations among morphological variables caused by demographic changes across seasons is unknown. An ecomorphological model is applied to a guild of benthic stream fishes from the Tombigbee River, Mississippi. The model is found to describe structuring in the guild based on aspects of the trophic morphology and the length of the body. Morphologically distinct groups of species are described by the model. The effect of indeterminate growth seems not to be of sufficient magnitude to change groupings across seasons. However, species associations within morphological groups change seasonally. I conclude that ecomorphological models may be properly applied to community subsets, but the interpretation of the model must consider the nature of the data set with respect of seasonality.
