Notes: Abstract Longevity and fecundity of pear psylla adults, Cacopsylla pyri (L.) (Homoptera: Psyllidae), were studied in Greece under field conditions, during 1991/92 and 1992/93. Net fecundity (mean fecundity of cohort) of the overwintered females (winter form) was low (24.1 and 43.4 eggs per female for 1991/92 and 1992/93 respectively) because only a small fraction of the females survive reproductive diapause. Surviving females, however, are capable of producing a relatively high number of eggs (135.0 and 151 9 eggs per female for the two seasons respectively). Net fecundity of summer form females was very high in spring (343.2 and 406.8 eggs per female for 1992 and 1993 respectively), relatively high in early autumn (130.4 and 192.5 eggs per female) and very low in summer (21.9 and 46.5 eggs per female). Male longevity was in all cases shorter than that of female. Longevity of both sexes of the summer form was higher in spring and autumn (for females it ranged from 22.3 to 28.4 days) than it was in summer (for females it ranged from 14.3 to 17.4 days).

Notes: Abstract By using chromosome images as a framework, algorithms for finding most dissimilar images are presented and illustrated by examples. In terms of angles, a chromosome image consists of two exterior biangles and two interior biangles. Biangles are defined and classified into 180° biangles, 〉180° biangles and 〈180° biangles. The dissimilarity of biangles and its geometric interpretation together with various properties of biangles are also presented. The results may have useful applications in pattern recognition, scene analysis, information storage and retrieval, artificial intelligence and fuzzy set theory.

Notes: Abstract Let Ω ⊂ℝd have finite positive Lebesgue measure, and let $$\mathcal{L}^2$$ (Ω) be the corresponding Hilbert space of $$\mathcal{L}^2$$ -functions on Ω. We shall consider the exponential functionse λ on Ω given bye λ(x)=e i2πλ·x . If these functions form an orthogonal basis for $$\mathcal{L}^2$$ (Ω), when λ ranges over some subset Λ in ℝ d , then we say that (Ω, Λ) is a spectral pair, and that Λ is a spectrum. We conjecture that (Ω, Λ) is a spectral pair if and only if the translates of some set Ω′ by the vectors of Λ tile ℝd. In the special case of Ω=Id, the d-dimensional unit cube, we prove this conjecture, with Ω′=Id, for d≤3, describing all the tilings by Id, and for all d when Λ is a discrete periodic set. In an appendix we generalize the notion of spectral pair to measures on a locally compact abelian group and its dual.

Notes: Abstract 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid (1-NAA), required for in vitro flower bud formation, was taken up by pedicel explants of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) in large amounts and rapidly metabolized into various conjugates. These conjugates have been tentatively identified in four thin-layer Chromatographic systems using authentic standards as references. The major metabolite formed during the first hours of culture comigrated with 1-NAA-glucoside (1-NAGlu). From the 6th hour on, most 1-NAA had been converted into a yet unidentified metabolite. 1-NAglu was an intermediate in the formation of this metabolite. After 24 h, 1-NAA-aspartate (1-NAAsp) became the second major metabolite. The increase in 1-NAAsp formation was induced by 1-NAA. The inactive analog 2-naphthaleneacetic acid (2-NAA) was metabolized similar to 1-NAA, but was unable to increase the formation of the aspartate conjugate. When explants were fed labeled 1-NAGlu, 1-NAAsp or the major unidentified metabolite, radioactivity became associated with free 1-NAA and all major conjugates, indicating interconversion of conjugates and breakdown to free 1-NAA. A regulatory role of conjugation in maintaining a particular level of free 1-NAA in the tissue is proposed herein.

Notes: Abstract Two algorithms appeared (Lee [6] and Boehm [1]), both in this journal, for the computation of derivatives of aB-spline series that are faster than the repeated application of de Boor's algorithm to the derived series. Here we report on some test examples which show, however, that both these are less stable than the repeated de Boor.
