Notes: Summary This paper studies the parametric dependence of battle outcome (in particular, force annihilation) for combat between two homogeneous forces modelled by Lanchester-type equations of modern warfare with time-dependent attrition-rate coefficients. Force-annihilation prediction has been shown to depend on a so-called parity-condition parameter, which depends on only the attrition-rate coefficients. New important results are given on how the parity-condition parameter depends on the intensity of combat and the relative fire effectiveness of the combatants. Previous analytical results of the author are shown to apply to a much wider class of attrition-rate coefficients. These new results allow a wide class of Lanchester-type equations of modern warfare with temporal variations in fire effectiveness to be studied almost as easily as Lanchester's classic constant-coefficient model.

Notes: Abstract. The gibberellins A1, A3, A5, A8, A19, A20, and A29 were identified in vegetative shoot tips of Rosa canina by comparing their mass spectra and Kovats retention indices with those of standards. Most wild roses have a short flowering season of 2–4 weeks in spring, whereas most modern cultivars flower recurrently. `Félicité et Perpétue' is a short-season hybrid from a cross between a wild rose and a recurrent-flowering rose, whereas its sport, `Little White Pet,' flowers recurrently. The concentrations of gibberellins (GAs) were measured in shoot apices of both cultivars. In March (before floral initiation in spring) the concentrations of GA1 and GA3 were respectively threefold and twofold higher in `Félicité et Perpétue' than in `Little White Pet.' In April (after floral initiation) the concentrations of both gibberellins were substantially greater than in March, and concentrations of GA1 and GA3 were, respectively, 17-fold and 12-fold greater in `Félicité et Perpétue' than in `Little White Pet.' It is postulated that, in `Félicité et Perpétue,' floral initiation occurs when concentrations of GAs are low and is inhibited when concentrations of GAs are high, whereas in `Little White Pet' concentrations of GAs remain at permissive levels throughout the growing season. Applications of GA1 and GA3 to axillary shoots in March inhibited floral development in `Félicité et Perpétue' but not in `Little White Pet.' This suggests that the combined concentration of exogenous and endogenous gibberellins might have been raised to inhibitory levels in the former but not in the latter cultivar.

Notes: Abstract We calculate the high-temperature (T 4) limit of the 3-graviton vertex function, with a single loop of internal scalar particles in thermal equilibrium. We use the analytically continued imaginary-time formalism. We verify a particular case of the Ward identity connecting the 3- and 2-graviton functions. This confirms that there is covariance under general coordinate transformations (which reduce to the identity at infinity). We remark that the ghost-ghost-graviton vertex (with ghost and graviton internal lines) has noT 4 term. This implies that the 3-graviton function with internal graviton (and ghost) lines must satisfy the Ward identity too, so it is possible for it to be proportional to the scalar contribution. We have verified this for that part of the vertex function which is manifestly symmetric and traceless in the six Lorentz indices.

Notes: Abstract A fibre-optic of sub-150 fs pulse with wavelength tunability from 790 to 830 nm is demonstrated. The output from a gain-switched DFB laser diode at 1552 nm is amplified and compressed in an EDFA generating a soliton-Raman continuum which was then frequency doubled. The output wavelength was tuned over a 40 nm range with very little variation in the pulse duration and output power.

Notes: Abstract This article reviews the current state-of-the-art of optical pulse compressors based on the optical fibre-grating pair. As this technique has become a standard laboratory procedure providing pulses with duration shorter than those directly generated from mode-locked lasers, we review the basic mechanism of the method, the role played by additional non-linear effects (such as stimulated Raman scattering), describe the current results, with emphasis to our own work, and point out the limitations of the technique.

Notes: Abstract Results are presented on the operation and optimization of soliton Raman fibre-ring lasers using a c.w. mode-locked Nd-YAG laser at 1.32μm as the source of 100 ps pump pulses. Various lengths of standard single-mode silica fibre were used, and tunable pulses as short as 100 fs generated.
