Notes: Abstract In this paper, an asymptotic expansion solution of the constitutive equation of hardening materials is presented. Its 1st asymptotic integration can give an approximate one with good enough accuracy and the second asymptotic one improves the precision of solutions further. The steps of its algorithms are fairly simple and clear, and its computational workload is considerably reduced. It can be easily incorporated into a general purpose finite element program.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a theory of modal analysis for the dynamic response of fluid-structure systems is presented. A pair of generalized eigenvalue equations with three real symmetric matrices and their relationships are derived from the finite element equations in the form of structural displacements and fluid velocity potential. Generalized orthogonality relations of modal vectors are then developed. The response of the system to external excitation is derived in closed form by modal expansion. Two examples of the solution are given for illustration.

Notes: Abstract A constitutive model for cyclic plasticity is briefly outlined. Then the model is implemented in a finite element code to predict the response of cyclic loaded structural components such as a double-edge-notched plate, a grove bar and a nozzle in spherical shell. Comparision with results from other theories and experiments shows that the results obtained by using the present model are very satisfactory.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper we show that Hessian integrals $I_k$ , $k=0, 1, \cdots, n$ , can be estimated by those of higher order. The result extends a variant of the Poincaré inequality corresponding to the cases $k=0, 1$ . The proof depends on solving a related non-linear parabolic initial boundary value problem.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper, we prove the validity of the Chern conjecture in affine geometry [18], namely that an affine maximal graph of a smooth, locally uniformly convex function on two dimensional Euclidean space, R 2, must be a paraboloid. More generally, we shall consider the n-dimensional case, R n , showing that the corresponding result holds in higher dimensions provided that a uniform, “strict convexity” condition holds. We also extend the notion of “affine maximal” to non-smooth convex graphs and produce a counterexample showing that the Bernstein result does not hold in this generality for dimension n≥10.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we apply the neural network method to small business lending decisions. We use the neural network to classify the loan applications into the groups of acceptance or rejection, and compare the model results with the actual decisions made by loan officers. Data were collected from a leading bank in Central New York. The sample contains important financial statement and business information of borrowers and the loan officers' decisions. We conduct the network training on the data sample and find that the neural network has a stronger discriminating power for classifying the acceptance and rejection groups than traditional parametric and nonparametric classifiers. The results show that the neural network model has a high predictive ability. Our findings suggest that neural networks can be a very useful tool for enhancing small-business lending decisions and reducing loan processing time and costs.

Notes: Abstract Effects of electron-phonon interaction on the interaction between electrons in semiconductor quantum wells are considered. It is found that the direct Coulomb potential between electrons in a quantum well is smaller than that in bulk semicondutors. The antisymmetric modes of the confined bulk phonons and interface phonons have no contribution to the effective interaction of electrons. If a well is narrow enough, the effective interaction between electrons caused by interaction with interface phonons may exceed that by interaction with confined bulk phonons. In narrower wells the effective interaction potential of electrons produced by phonons is stronger, but decreases rapidly with increasing distance between electrons.
