Notes: Summary A convenient process for the synthesis of 3-alkylindolines2 and their transformation intocis-fused tricyclic γ-lactones3 from allylic alcohols1, mediated by aGrignard reagent, is described. This process proceeds with high stereocontrol at the two newly formed contiguous stereogenic centres. By oxidation with chromium oxide, 2-oxindole derivatives4 are obtained from 3-alkylindolines2.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die1H- und13C-NMR-Spektren der 4(3H)-Chinazolinone1–6 und ihrer entsprechenden 4-Thione7–12 wurden zugeordnet.
Notes: Summary Unambiguous1H and13C NMR assignments for 4(3H)-quinazolinones1–6 and their corresponding 4-thiones7–12 have been made. This resulted in the revision of the previous assignments for the two benzenoid carbons (C-5 and C-8) of quinazolinones1,2,4, and5. Thionation of the nucleophilic amides1–6 has been found to cause a distinct change in the13C chemical shift of particularly C-4, but also of those of C-4a, C-5, and C-8a. One-bond and several long range heteronuclear coupling constants for the compounds have also been measured.

Notes: Abstract 149 samples of rainwater were collected in the proximity of a power station in northwestern Spain at three rainwater monitoring stations. We analyze the resulting data using multivariate statistical techniques. Firstly, the Principal Component Analysis shows that there are three main sources of pollution in the area (a marine source, a rural source and an acid source). The impact from pollution from these sources on the immediate environment of the stations is studied using Factorial Discriminant Analysis.

Notes: Abstract It is well known that phosphate rock contains a small amount of uranium. During the production of phosphate fertilizers, most uranium present is found in the phosphate fraction. Uranium was determined in the 70–200 ppm range in the phosphate rock and the final products by nuclear and classical methods.

Notes: Abstract The sorption behavior of cobalt and cadmium by zeolite Y has been investigated. Cobalt and cadmium solutions were exchanged with the zeolite at different pH's. Cobalt, cadmium and sodium in the samples were determined by neutron activation analysis. The sorption of cadmium was higher than that of cobalt, however, the selectivity for both cations by the zeolite was low.

Notes: Abstract The apparent diffusion coefficient of Sr2+ in natural Mexican erionite from Sonora at different pH and concentrations were determined. Neutron activation was applied to measure the sorption of strontium. The apparent diffusion coefficient values showed that the mobility of Sr2+ through the cavities of the erionite depended on the concentration of strontium and the pH of the solution. As a consequence the sorption of this ion by the erionite was affected by these parameters and the maximum sorption of Sr2+ was at pH higher than 3 and 0.0094 mol·l−1 strontium nitrate solution.

Notes: Abstract The sorption behavior of cobalt by zeolite ZSM-5 was studied. Parameters such as temperature, hydration of the zeolite (before the sorption), as well as the presence and absence of ethylenediamine during the ion exchange at room temperature and 80 °C were considered. The highest retention of cobalt was found when the sorption experiments were done at 80 °C in the presence of ethylenediamine.

Notes: Abstract A solvent extraction technique to separate different chemical species of thorium is presented. The products formed by the chemical effects of the /n,γ/ reaction on the Th/acac/4 were separated by this method and the retention value was measured.

Notes: Abstract The use of NaX zeolite, in the sorption of cobalt and cadmium from aqueous solutions has been investigated. Ion exchange experiments were performed with cobalt and cadmium solutions at various pH and concentration. The cobalt, cadmium and sodium content were determined by neutron activation analysis. It was stated that the selectivity for cadmium is higher than for cobalt.

Notes: Abstract Co2+ ion exchange, at room temperature, from aqueous cobalt — sodium chloride solutions with NaY zeolite has been studied. The effect of contact time on the shape of the sorption curves of Co2+ using zeolite Y dehydrated at 600°C is similar to the one found in our previous work with a zeolite dehydrated at 150 °C. A fast sorption uptake is observed in which 1.8 meq of Na+ ions/g of zeolite are replaced by cobalt ions followed by a desorption process where the uptake decreases to 1.2 meq/g zeolite. The Co2+ sorption using zeolite Y dehydrated at 600 °C is increased when ethylenediamine solution is passed through the zeolite. The Co2+ sorption uptake, initially 2.0 meq/g, incrases to 2.8 meq/g of zeolite. This behavior is explained by the location and coordination of cobalt in zeolite Y sites. It is suggested that the highest uptake process is due to the blocking of zeolite sites by a Co complex compound.
