Notes: Abstract The title compound has been synthesized and its crystal structure has been solved at room temperature. It crystallizes in the triclinic system, space groupPĪ, witha=7.853(1) Å,b=10.177(1) Å,c=13.651(4) Å,α=74.57(1)°,β=88.49(1)°, γ=80.675(4)°, andZ=2. The structure consists of isolated [Cu(bipy)2N3]+ cations (bipy=2,2′-bipyridine) and perchlorate anions. The metallic cation environment has a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. The EPR spectrum is rhombic, which indicates that the distortion with respect to the perfect trigonal bipyramid is sufficiently pronounced to mixz 2- andx 2−y 2-type orbitals in the ground state. The temperature dependence of the molar magnetic susceptibility has been investigated in the 300-2.2 K temperature range.

Notes: Abstract: We report the first study of the effect of a high pulsed magnetic field on a spin transition complex in the solid state. The high spin fraction was determined by optical reflectivity. Sizeable effects are observed for the well-known spin transition solid Fe(Phen)2(NCS)2. In the hysteresis loop temperature range, an increase in the HS fraction is obtained, with an irreversible (reversible) character in the ascending (descending) branch of the loop. The time dependence of the HS fraction provides information on the kinetics of the spin-crossover process at the spin transition.

Notes: Abstract In PIV, the optimal time separation (Δt) between successive laser pulses is influenced by a number of parameters. In the present paper, only two kinds of error affecting the choice of Δt are studied: (i) random error arising from noise during recording of the flow seeded with tracer particles and subsequent interrogation of the particle images, and (ii) acceleration error arising from approximation of the local Eulerian velocity based on small (but non-zero) particle displacements. These two kinds of error place conflicting requirements on Δt. A model to optimize Δt with respect to these errors is described, and the model is confirmed by the results of a Monte Carlo simulation. This model for optimal Δt is extended to various acceleration distributions. An estimate for the spatial resolution of the velocity field resulting from cross-correlation PIV is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The precise effects of fructose feeding on adipose tissue is not clearly known. Consequently, we studied the effects of fructose feeding on stimulated and inhibited in vitro lipolysis. Twenty seven male Sprague Dawley rats, 5 weeks of age, were fed for 6 weeks on one of three diets containing 57% CHO as fructose (F), dextrose (D) or starch (S). At week 6 the epididymal fat pad weights showed no difference between groups. Stimulation of lipolysis by isoproterenol or theophylline showed: decreased sensitivity of adipocytes to isoproterenol, but not to theophylline, in F (p 〈 0.05); the maximal responses were decreased, but NS, after stimulation by either isoproterenol or theophylline. The maximal antilipolytic responses to insulin were increased in F (27%) and D (29%) when compared to S (16%), (p 〈 0.05). Only, in F there was an increase (NS) in ED50() (0.63 ± 0.23 ng/ml) compared to D (0.45 ± 0.18) and S (0.29 ±0.18), indicating decreased sensitivity. Nonfasting plasma insulin and triglycerides were increased at the 6th week in F (p 〈 0,01), without any change in plasma glucose levels. However, there was no difference in 12 h fasting plasma glucose, insulin or triglycerides. In conclusion, a 6 week 57% fructose containing diet in normal rats led to: 1) decreased lipid mobilization in the epididymal adipose tissue; and 2) increased nonfasting plasma insulin and triglycerides. Thus fructose, under these experimental conditions, seems to have adverse metabolic effects in normal rats.

Notes: Abstract We discuss the τ polarization measurement at SLC/LEP energies as a data point in the precision tests of the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg model. Theoretical and experimental uncertainties of this measurement are examined and it is concluded that apart from left-right asymmetry measurement, and for typical values of the parameters of the Standard Model, the τ polarization offers the best probe of the couplings of leptons to the Z0. In particular, the dependence of the τ polarization on the top and Higgs masses is discussed. The interplay of QED initial state bremsstrahlung and other classes of radiative corrections is also discussed.

Notes: An important cortical fibrillar cytoskeleton is described in some unarmoured dinoflagellates (Gymnodinium, Gyrodinium). The filaments which constitute this cortical layer are 2-3 nm in diameter, tightly packed, entangled, and resistant to denaturing agents. Issuing from them are other bundles of filaments which appear to be involved in the contraction of the cell, and for this reason they are termed “myonemal.”In highly contractile unarmoured dinoflagellates (Leptophyllus) the cytoskeleton is also made of 2-3-nm filaments, but they are regularly arrayed and more directly involved in contraction and thus correspond also to myonemal structures. Both structures - cytoskeletal and myonemal - are made of 2-3-nm filaments.

Notes: Flagellar rootlets play an important role in “primitive motile systems.” They are made of filaments able to contract by twisting and Ca+2 binding. The pusules of Dinoflagellates appear to be under the control of large bundles of 2.4 nm nonactin filaments that correspond to the striated rootlets of their two flagella.

Notes: The cytoskeletal microtubule system has been studied in six species of unarmoured Dinoflagellates using immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. Several structures have been detected and described: (1) a subpellicular layer of microtubules, constituting the microtubular cytoskeleton, running singly or in bundles from the anterior part of the cell to the posterior; (2) a feeding apparatus, containing a ribbon of microtubules, which corresponds to a small peduncle in some species and is simply represented by a cytostome in some other species; and (3) the longitudinal flagellum that runs in a long intracytoplasmic pocket before becoming free at the extremity of the sulcus. A thorough study of the organization of the microtubular structures in a wide spectrum of Dinoflagellates is a prerequisite for understanding the evolutionary history of the group.

Notes: An iron(III) complex [Fe(salten)(Mepepy)]BPh4 containing only one photoisomerizable ligand (Mepepy) has been synthesized, it exhibits a thermally-induced spin crossover in the solid state and in solution {H2salten = 4-azaheptamethylene-1,7-bis(salicylideneiminate); Mepepy = 1-(pyridin-4-yl)-2-(N-methylpyrrol-2-yl)ethene}. The photoisomerizations of both the free and coordinated Mepepy ligand have been observed at room temperature with visible-light irradiation and monitored by UV/Vis and 1H NMR spectrometries. trans-to-cis isomerization of only one photosensitive ligand in the iron(III) complex is sufficient to detect a partial spin change of the iron(III) ion. This photoinduced spin change is seen for the first time from a high-spin state to a low-spin state.
