    Notizen: This paper describes a divide-and-conquer strategy for solving block Hessenberg systems. For dense matrices the method is as efficient as Gaussian elimination; however, because it works almost entirely with the original blocks, it is much more efficient for sparse matrices or matrices whose blocks can be generated on the fly. For Toeplitz matrices, the algorithm can be combined with the fast Fourier transform.

    Notizen: Markov chains with periodic graphs arise frequently in a wide range of modelling experiments. Application areas range from flexible manufacturing systems in which pallets are treated in a cyclic manner to computer communication networks. The primary goal of this paper is to show how advantage may be taken of this property to reduce the amount of computer memory and computation time needed to compute stationary probability vectors of periodic Markov chains. After reviewing some basic properties of Markov chains whose associated graph is periodic, we introduce a ‘reduced scheme’ in which only a subset of the probability vector need be computed. We consider the effect of the application of both direct and iterative methods to the original Markov chain (permuted to normal periodic form) as well as to the reduced system. We show how the periodicity of the Markov chain may be efficiently computed as the chain itself is being generated. Finally, some numerical experiments to illustrate the theory, are presented.

    Notizen: In this paper a new time-stepping method for simulating systems of rigid bodies is given which incorporates Coulomb friction and inelastic impacts and shocks. Unlike other methods which take an instantaneous point of view, this method does not need to identify explicitly impulsive forces. Instead, the treatment is similar to that of J. J. Moreau and Monteiro-Marques, except that the numerical formulation used here ensures that there is no inter-penetration of rigid bodies, unlike their velocity-based formulation. Numerical results are given for the method presented here for a spinning rod impacting a table in two dimensions, and a system of four balls colliding on a table in a fully three-dimensional way. These numerical results also show the practicality of the method, and convergence of the method as the step size becomes small.

    Notizen: The Bradshaw-Ferriss-Atwell model for 2D constant property turbulent boundary layers is shown to be ill-posed with respect to numerical solution. It is shown that a simple modification to the model equations results in a well-posed system which is hyperbolic in nature. For this modified system a numerical algorithm is constructed by discretizing in space using the Petrov-Galerkin technique (of which the standard Galerkin method is a special case) and stepping in the timelike direction with the trapezoidal (Crank-Nicolson) rule. The algorithm is applied to a selection of test problems. It is found that the solutions produced by the standard Galerkin method exhibit oscillations. It is further shown that these oscillations may be eliminated by employing the Petrov-Galerkin method with the free parameters set to simple functions of the eigenvalues of the modified system.

    Notizen: An upwind finite element technique that uses cell-centred quantities and implicit and/or explicit time marching has been developed for computing hypersonic laminar viscous flows using adaptive triangular grids. The approach is an extension to unstructured grids of the LAURA algorithm due to Gnoffo. A structured grid of quadrilaterals is laid out near a solid surface. For inviscid flows the method is stable at Courant numbers of over 100000. A first-order basic scheme and a higher-order flux-corrected transport (FCT) scheme have been implemented. This technique has been applied to the problem of predicting type III and IV shock wave interactions on a cylinder, with a view to simulating the pressure and heating rate augmentation caused by an impinging shock on the leading edge of a cowl lip of an engine inlet. The predictions of wall pressure and heating rates compare very well with experimental data. The flow features are distinctly captured with a sequence of adaptively generated grids.
