Notizen: A newly developed numerical Laplace transform inversion technique is described. A derivation of the method, termed the ‘multidata method’, is presented along with a description of a similar collocation method. Similarities and differences between the two numerical methods are described and discussed. Results of parameter studies of both methods are presented which demonstrate the sensitivity to error displayed by the collocation method and the magnitude of the improvement in accuracy obtainable with the multidata method as compared with the collocation method, especially when errors exist in the function to be inverted.

Notizen: Computational techniques for the treatment of fluid-structure interaction effects by discrete boundary integral methods are examinde. Attention is focused on the computation of the added mass matrix by finite element methods for a structure submerged in an infinite, inviscid, incompressible fluid. A general computational procedure is presented that is based upon a variational approach involving the assumption of constant source strength over each surface element. This is followed by an analysis of the discretization error for a spherical body that is then used to develop a hierarchy of computational schemes. These schemes are than evaluated numerically in terms of ‘fluid boundary modes’ for a submerged spherical surface. One scheme has been found to be surprisingly accurate in relation to its computational demands.

Notizen: An algorithm has been developed which automatically calculates the time-dependent positions of points on the ablating boundaries of two-dimensional continuum structures with geometrially complex shapes. The structural boundary may consist of ablating and non-ablating parts. The initial ablating and non-ablating boundaries are defined by the disjoint union of piecewise linear arcs passing through a finite set of nodal points on the boundary, each defined by a pair of rectangular Cartesian co-ordinates. For a specified ablation rate, the algorithm calculates successive positions of the boundary points at times specifiec by the user. The algorithm is designed such that it may be easily incorporated, along with an automated mesh generation procedure, into existing finite element codes for transient thermal or stress analysis of structures with ablating boundaries. Two examples are presented from the field of solid rocket analysis.

Notizen: Recently we synthesized a naphthalene analog of medetomidine, 4-[1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl]-1H-imidazole hydrochloride (1), and found it to be highly potent in adrenergic systems. The separation of optical isomers of this naphthalene analog was achieved by using the isomers of tartaric acid. The optical purities of the isomers were determined by HPLC using a chiral column. Using X-ray analysis the (+)-isomer was determined to have the S absolute configuration. It has been reported that the (+)-isomer of medetomidine (2) is the most potent enantiomer on α2-adrenergic receptors. There were both qualitative and quantitative differences in biological activities of the optical isomers of 1 in α1- and α2-adrenergic receptor systems of guinea pig ileum and human platelets. (+)-(S)-1, but not ( - )-(R)-1 was a selective agonist of α2-mediated responses in ileum whereas ( - )-(R)-1 was more potent than (+)-(S)-1 as an inhibitor of α2-mediated platelet aggregation. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notizen: Unimolecular decomposition of 0·1 Torr of diethyl carbonate, diethyl-d5 carbonate and diethyl-d10 carbonate induced by irradiation with a CO2 TEA laser was investigated. In all cases only ethylene, ethanol and CO2 were obtained. In the case of diethyl-d5 carbonate, both ethylene-d4 and ethylene-d0 were observed together with the corresponding isotopic variants of ethanol. The chemical branching ratio was determined as a function of irradiation frequency and laser fluence by analysis of the ethylene-d0/ethylene-d4 ratio. RRKM theory applied to the branching ratio data requires very different average energies for two sets of fluence and frequency conditions that give identical total yields.
