Notes: We developed a three-dimensional (3D) second-order gradiometer connected to three superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) for vector measurement of a magnetoencephalogram (MEG) that can detect magnetic-field components perpendicular and tangential to the scalp simultaneously. Each coil is orthogonally wound with Nb–Ti wire on a rectangular solid 3×3×6 cm. To assess discrimination and separation of multiple sources, we carried out a 3D vector measurement of the MEG with a mixed auditory evoked field (AEF) and a somatosensory evoked field (SEF) overlapping in time. The magnetic-field distribution perpendicular to the scalp was not helpful in estimating the location and number of sources, owing to the lack of a dipole pattern. But the magnetic-field distribution tangential to the scalp can provide information about constraint conditions by visual inspection. We estimated multiple sources of the mixed AEF and SEF from the MEG data of the magnetic field tangential to the scalp and confirmed by comparison with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of a subject's head superimposed source locations. We conclude that this 3D second-order gradiometer can provide constraint conditions by visual inspection for calculating the inverse problem with multiple sources. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The photon counting method is proposed for the field of A(ring) x-ray diffraction. For this purpose, a new memory device was developed. The photon distribution and the photon autocorrelation were measured, and high-intensity sources such as the rotating anode generator and the Photon Factory were characterized. It has been shown that the method is useful to investigate time-dependent phenomena on the time scale down to 10 μs.

Notes: Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x superconducting thin films which have isotropic Jc-B properties were prepared onto SrTiO3 (100) substrates at 700 °C by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The Jc did not depend on directions of the field either perpendicular or parallel to the c axis of the films and the films had a high Jc of 6.1×104 and 7.1×104 A/cm2 at 77 K and 5 T perpendicular and parallel to the c axis, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy observation and x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis indicated that the films contained many fine Y2BaCuO5-like precipitates with diameter of ∼10 nm and they were distributed uniformly with the density Np as high as 1023/m3.

Notes: Superconducting Pb-doped HgBa2CaCu2Oy films have been successfully synthesized on the (100) SrTiO3 substrate by laser ablation using a Pb-doped Hg-1212 target and post-annealing. The as-deposited film was post-annealed with a pellet of the same powders as those of the target at 760 °C for 20 min in an evacuated quartz tube. The obtained film exhibited the (00n) oriented x-ray diffraction pattern of the Hg-1212. The superconducting transition temperature, Tczero, was 117 K. Anisotropy of magnetization, M(T) and M-H curves in the directions of two different fields was confirmed.

Notes: High Jc Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x superconducting thin and thick films were prepared onto SrTiO3 (100) substrates at 700 °C by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique using a single solution source. A mixture of Y, Ba, and Cu β-diketonate chelates was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran as a solution source. Zero resistance transition temperature and critical current density at 77 K, 0 T for thin and thick films were 90 K and 2.73×106 A/cm2, 91 K and 3.1×105 A/cm2, respectively. X-ray diffraction measurement indicated that the thin film grew epitaxially with the c-axis orientation perpendicular to the surface of the substrate and the thick films mainly consisted of a-axis orientation.

Notes: The effects of coexisting nonsuperconducting phases (BaCuO2, Y2 Cu2 O5 and Y2 BaCuO5 ) on the superconductivity of YBa2 Cu3 O7 have been investigated by measuring the temperature-dependent resistivity and ac susceptibility. As the fraction of the nonsuperconducting phase is increased in the YBa2 Cu3 O7 sample (1) the onset and apparent zero Tc in the R-T curves shift to a lower temperature, (2) the temperature region of the resistive transition becomes broad, and (3) the behavior of the resistivity changes from metallic to semiconductorlike at temperatures above Tc. The resistivity measured as a function of temperature is simulated using a paralleled-circuit model. The model reproduces well the observed R-T curves and in all the observations stated above.
