    Notes: Spectral numerical simulations of homogeneous incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence at Reynolds mumbers up to about 500, are performed using a uniform grid of 1803 collocation points. Strong vorticity and current sheets obtain both in the presence and in the absence of magnetic nulls. Contrary to vortex sheets in hydrodynamics, these structures do not destabilize into filaments, but are locally disrupted. They are the main loci of kinetic and magnetic dissipations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A numerical simulation of decaying supersonic turbulence using the piecewise parabolic method (PPM) algorithm on a computational mesh of 5123 zones indicates that, once the solenoidal part of the velocity field, representing vortical motions, is fully developed and has reached a self-similar regime, a velocity spectrum compatible with that predicted by the classical theory of Kolmogorov develops. It is followed by a domain with a shallower spectrum. A convergence study is presented to support these assertions. The formation, structure, and evolution of slip surfaces and vortex tubes are presented in terms of perspective volume renderings of fields in physical space.

    Notes: Direct numerical simulations of decaying two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic flows at Reynolds numbers of several thousand are performed, using resolutions of 10242 collocation points. An inertial range extending to about one decade is observed, with spectral properties depending on the velocity–magnetic field correlation. At very small scales, resistive tearing destabilizes current sheets generated by the inertial dynamics and leads to the formation of small-scale magnetic islands, which may then grow and reach the size of inertial scales.

    Notes: Direct numerical simulations at resolutions up to (512)2 of developed turbulence in nondriven two-dimensional incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows are presented. In all cases, there is no background magnetic field. Nevertheless, periodic exchanges of kinetic and magnetic energies are observed, an effect that is reminiscent of interference of linear Alfvén waves; three-dimensional runs also display such oscillations. This effect is inhibited by the velocity-magnetic field correlations. It is also found that the correlations do not sizably affect the characteristic transfer time of energy to the small scales, but significantly reduce the maximum amplitude of velocity and magnetic field gradients. It is shown that velocity-magnetic field correlation also affects inertial range spectral indices, a result that validates predictions based on two-point closures [Astron. Astrophys. 126, 151 (1983)].
