Notes: A mathematical study is made of the systematic uncertainty in the Langavant calorimeter calibration, determining the most influent variables being able to optimize the method. The influence of calibration constants on the determination of the heat of hydration of a cement is analyzed. Accuracy modification of several measuring instruments is suggested and imprecisions correction in the UNE 80-118-86 Spanish Standard and in the NF P 15-436-88 French Standard are proposed.

Notes: A cylinder made of a homogeneous isotropic material and with a length equal to its diameter is excited by axial percussion. Its axial displacement is detected by speckle interferometry. The two lowest frequencies, the first symmetric mode and first antisymmetric mode, are compared with the corresponding nondimensional natural frequencies, calculated to six significant figures using the Ritz method for 51 values of Poisson's ratio. The values of both dynamic elastic constants (shear modulus and Poisson's ratio) are found based on the quotient of the measured frequencies by using a table that is given. The method requires only one experiment and a simple calculator. The origin of the uncertainties is analyzed to improve the method's precision. The systematic uncertainty of the results shows relative values of 0.23% for shear modulus and 0.59% for Poisson's ratio. The values of the elastic constants calculated for a stainless steel test piece are compared with the values obtained by other methods. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Using a block of anisotropic material from the point of view of thermal expansion, six bars are cut in different spatial directions. A double-exposure photograph of speckle is taken of the six bars, one before and one after the temperature is increased. Only one double exposure is required for the six bars altogether. Illuminating two points of the double specklegram of each bar with a narrow laser beam and measuring the angle between the diffraction maxima, the longitudinal expansion is obtained for each bar and the thermal expansion tensor of the material is calculated.

Notes: A theoretic calculation of the systematic uncertainty of the heat of hydration of cement using the Langavant calorimeter is made. The significant causes of error obtained when following the methodology described by the French Standard NF P15-436-88 and the Spanish Standard UNE 80-118-86 are analyzed. Simple modifications to the said Standards are suggested which would lead to a 70% reduction in the systematic uncertainty of the measurement.

Notes: It is shown that when a dynamical system X0 with a proper set of global first integrals is perturbed, the phase space region accessible to the orbits of the perturbed vector field X0+Xp is bounded (we are assuming here that the time variable runs over a finite interval). A polynomial new bound is obtained for the separation between the solutions of X0 and X0+Xp. Perturbations near an equilibrium point of X0 are also considered. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It is shown that for any local Lie group G of transformations in R×Rn there exist differential systems of the form x(m=f(t,x,...,x(m−1), which are symmetrical under G. The order m(underbar) of these systems is related to r(underbar), the number of essential parameters of G.
