Direct evidence is presented of the temporal and spatial interplay between ion acoustic waves (IAWs) associated with stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and electron plasma waves (EPWs) associated with stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in conditions of interest to inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The two types of waves grow over a limited region in the front part of the plasma, but at different times. Inhibition of the EPWs by the IAWs has been observed in the early part of the laser pulse, and this inhibition can be strengthened by increasing the level of the IAWs. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
