    Notes: The thermal dissociation of diatomics in inert gases has been the subject of numerous experimental and theoretical studies. There is excellent agreement between the measured and calculated bimolecular rate constants for H2, and this has become a test case for master-equation and other approaches. In this paper we consider a Nosé equation approach, which is appropriate if the inert gas simply acts as a heat bath, as may be the case in the limit of infinite dilution of H2. We examine the extent to which the Nosé equation can thermalize the H2 dynamics for the temperature range 4000–10 000 K. We show that we can calculate meaningful pseudo-unimolecular rate constants for the temperature range 7000–10 000 K and, for this temperature range, we obtain an activation energy of 3.7±0.5 eV, which is compatible with the experimental value.

    Notes: Applicability of the Preisach hysteresis model to superconductive hysteresis is tested on two types of materials using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The experiments are set up to check if the hysteresis displayed by the two samples satisfies the necessary and sufficient conditions for the applicability of the Preisach model. These conditions are wiping out of some field history by certain subsequent field extrema and congruency of minor hysteresis loops corresponding to the same field cycles, but having different histories. Observation of the measured minor hysteresis loops indicates that the two conditions are satisfied for the two samples tested. For this reason, it can be concluded that the Preisach model is a very accurate representation of superconductive hysteresis, at least for some superconducting materials.

    Notes: Amorphous BC2N powders were prepared by mechanical milling with hexagonal boron nitride and graphite as starting materials. A bulk amorphous BC2N compound was produced by sintering the as-milled amorphous BC2N powders in a vacuum of 10−5 Torr at a temperature of 1470 K. The conductivity measurement for the bulk amorphous BC2N compound showed that it behaves as a semiconductor with band gap energy of 0.11 eV for temperatures ranging from room temperature to 560 K and a semimetal for temperatures between 560 and 740 K. The mechanism of the formation of the amorphous BC2N powders is discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper addresses problems associated with thermal annealing and n-type and p-type doping in CuInS2. The results of incorporating impurities like Zn and P in CuInS2 single crystals by different methods are reported. Some evidence has been provided to explain the formation of precipitates being the limiting factor to exhibit the shallow acceptor property. The electron beam annealing of phosphorus-implanted CuInS2 has been shown for the first time to be an effective way for p-type conductivity control by extrinsic impurities in any I-III-VI2 ternary chalcopyrite.

    Notes: We propose a novel field-effect semiconductor laser whose wavelength can be tuned by an electric field parallel to the growth direction of two tightly coupled quantum wells in the active region. We have demonstrated the concept by optically pumping a laser heterostructure whose active region consisted of two 50 A(ring) GaAs wells separated by a 20 A(ring) Ga0.77Al0.23As potential barrier, in which, at 5 K, we have achieved tuning of the stimulated emission by more than 7 nm.

    Description: The CH 3 I structural deformation induced by strong laser fields is revealed by time- and frequency-resolved ro-vibrational spectra. The experimental results show that the CH 3 I molecule undergoes ultrafast structural deformation of CH 3 “umbrella-closing” induced by the strong fs laser field (more than 10 11 W/cm 2 ) and followed by a structural relaxation of “umbrella-opening” within an exponential decay time scale of ∼620 fs. This study provides a first glimpse of the immense potential of the time- and frequency-resolved vibrational spectra in studying molecular deformation dynamics.

    Description: The hot cathode ion source will tend to be unstable when operated with high power and long pulse. In order to achieve stable operation, a new regulation method based on the arc power (discharge power) feedback control was designed and tested on the hot cathode ion source test bed with arc discharge and beam extraction. The results show that the new regulation method can achieve stable arc discharge and beam extraction. It verifies the success of feedback control of arc source with arc power.

    Description: The dependence of divertor asymmetry and scrape-off layer (SOL) flow on heating power has been investigated in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). Divertor plasma exhibits an outboard-enhanced in-out asymmetry in heat flux in lower single null configuration for in reversed (ion ∇ B drift direction toward the upper X-point) field directions. Upper single null exhibits an inboard-favored asymmetry in low heating power condition, while exhibits an outboard-favored asymmetry when increasing the heating power. Double null has the strongest in-out asymmetry in heat flux, favoring the outer divertor. The in-out asymmetry ratios of q t , out / q t , in and P out / P total increase with the power across the separatrix P loss , which is probably induced by the enhanced radial particle transport due to a large pressure gradient. The characteristics of the measured SOL parallel flow under various discharge conditions are consistent with the Pfirsch-Schlüter (PS) flow with the parallel Mach number M ∥ decreasing with the line averaged density but increasing with P loss , in the same direction as the PS flow. The contributions of both poloidal E × B drift and parallel flow on poloidal particle transport in SOL on EAST are also assessed.

    Description: We report the development of a powerful method for quantum transport calculations of nanowire/nanobeam structures with large cross sectional area. Our approach to quantum transport is based on Green's functions and tight-binding potentials. A linear algebraic formulation allows us to harness the massively parallel nature of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and our implementation is based on a heterogeneous parallel computing scheme with traditional processors and GPUs working together. Using our software tool, the electronic and quantum transport properties of silicon nanobeams with a realistic cross sectional area of ∼22.7 nm 2 and a length of ∼81.5 nm—comprising 105 000 Si atoms and 24 000 passivating H atoms in the scattering region—are investigated. The method also allows us to perform significant averaging over impurity configurations—all possible configurations were considered in the case of single impurities. Finally, the effect of the position and number of vacancy defects on the transport properties was considered. It is found that the configurations with the vacancies lying closer to the local density of states (LDOS) maxima have lower transmission functions than the configurations with the vacancies located at LDOS minima or far away from LDOS maxima, suggesting both a qualitative method to tune or estimate optimal impurity configurations as well as a physical picture that accounts for device variability. Finally, we provide performance benchmarks for structures as large as ∼42.5 nm 2 cross section and ∼81.5 nm length.
