Notes: The temporal dependence of the metastable fractions have been measured for monomer evaporation from Ar+20, Ar+50, Ar+100, Kr+20, Kr+50, and Kr+100 ions produced by electron impact ionization of the respective neutral cluster beams. Size and temporal dependence are found to be in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the evaporative ensemble model. Small variations from the model predictions observed (in particular for the evaporation channel involving the cluster with the magic number 20) may be rationalized within this model by adjusting the appropriate parameters.

Notes: LiNbO3 single crystals with a composition close to stoichiometry are grown by using a double crucible Czochralski method equipped with an automatic powder supply system. The photorefractive properties are compared with those of LiNbO3 crystals grown from the congruent composition melt. Two beam coupling experiments show that both nondoped and Fe-doped stoichiometric crystals exhibit stronger photorefractive effect than the Fe-doped congruent crystals.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have studied the electro-optic properties as a function of temperature of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal film composed of E7 dispersed as droplets in a polyvinylformal (PVFM) matrix. The drive voltage and turn-off time change abruptly as the temperature is raised above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PVFM matrix. There is essentially no hysteresis below, but significant hysteresis above Tg. These temperature effects are completely reversible. The rapid change in electro-optic properties cannot be entirely explained by changes in the polymer dielectric properties or droplet shape. Freedericksz measurements show no abrupt change in the surface anchoring energy at Tg, which may be responsible for the changes observed in the electro-optic response.

Description: There are numerous sources of mechanical energy in our environment, such as ultrasonic waves, body movement, and irregular air flow/vibration. Here, we present a simple, cost-effective approach for fabricating a flexible nanogenerator and apply it to harvest energy from environmental mechanical vibrations. The nanogenerator was based on ZnO nanorods grown on common paper substrate using a low-temperature hydrothermal method. Piezoelectric currents were measured by attaching the nanogenerator on the surface of a cantilever and a wind-up drum, respectively. At the same time, the vibrations of the cantilever and wind-up drum could also be characterized by the corresponding output signals. This is a practical and versatile technology with the potential for converting a variety of environment energy into electric energy, and also with the application for pre-warning of emergency, such as earthquake and burgling.

Description: Thermal stability of optical near field transducers is an important issue for heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), which affects HAMR system lifetime. In this paper, dark-field scattering spectroscopy was used to study the stability of nanometer-scaled Au lollipop transducers that were subjected to thermal annealing. Variation in relative peak intensity and red-shifting in peak position can be observed in scattering spectra for transducer after annealing. Based on the optical characterizations on Au thin films and calculations of Mie scattering by finite-difference time domain simulations, the measured changes in transducer scattering properties can reflect annealing-induced variations in optical properties and dimensional feature size for the Au lollipop transducer. Dark-field scattering spectroscopy can be a promising method to examine HAMR near field transducer thermal stability.
