Notes: The compound cis-[Ni(C6F5)2(PhCN)2] has been used as the starting material for the preparation of the bimetallic complexes [(C6F5)2Ni(μ-X)2Ni(C6F5)2]2- (X = SCN, OCN, N3), [(C6F5)2Ni(μ-SCN)2Pd(C6F5)2]2-, [(C6F5)2Ni(μ-NCS)2Pd-(dppe)] [dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ethane], and the trimetallic[(C6F5)2Ni(μ-NCS)2Pd(μ-SCN)2Ni(C6F5)2]2-. The mononuclear compounds [(C6F5)2NiLX] (L = PPh3, P(C6H4MeO-p)3; X = SCN, OCN) are obtained by reaction between [(C6F5)2Ni(&μ-X)2Ni-(C6F5)2]2- and L. The treatment of cis-[Ni(C6F5)2(PhCN)2] with [M(SAr)2(dppe)] leads to the formation of the arylthiolate complexes [(C6F5)2Ni(μ-SAr)2M(dppe)] (Ar = Ph, C6H4Me-p, C6H4NO2-p; M = Ni, Pd, Pt). The X-ray diffraction study of [(C6F5)2Ni(μ-SPh)2Pd(dppe)] shows that both metal atoms, Ni and Pd, are coordinated in a slightly distorted square-planar geometry and the μ-thiolato groups are in the syn conformation.

Notes: Sexual dimorphism in the distribution of antennal sense organs is common among adults of the genus Periplaneta. In three out of the four strains of Periplaneta americana examined, adult males had more contact chemoreceptors than females. In the fourth strain of P. americana and in P. australasiae, P. brunnea, P. fuliginosa, and P. japonica, no statistically supportable sexual dimorphism of contact chemoreceptors was found. However, in all strains and species of Periplaneta examined, sexual dimorphism was found in the total number and/or density of olfactory sensilla. Male adults had nearly twice as many olfactory sensilla as female adults. These observations are consistent with the behavioral observation that males within the genus Periplaneta rely on the reception of an airborne pheromone for the initiation of courtship behavior. In P. americana, where sexual dimorphism was found in the contact chemoreceptors, contact stimuli release the full wing raising display and presentation in males during courtship.

Notes: The mature ovary of Gastrotheca riobambae presents large oocytes (3 mm in diameter) of pale yellow color. After ovulation and the beginning of embryonic incubation, the empty postovulatory follicles can be recognized in the ovary for about 30 days. The granulosa of these follicles never fills the follicular lumen and this cavity becomes filled with fluid during the first five days of incubation. Later, at 18 days of incubation, the lumen is mostly empty and contains few cells of the granulosa. Shrinkage results in the disappearance of the follicular cavity by approximately the thirtieth day of incubation. The thecae are thick and become separated by a space. This space is filled progressively with cells, blood capillaries and fluid. After the thirtieth to fortieth day of incubation, these follicles become regressive and disappear. The postovulatory follicles of Gastrotheca may correspond to corpora lutea. The evidence suggests that pouch vascularization and the formation of embryonic chambers of pouch tissue may be under ovarian control. In addition, the process of vitellogenesis is influenced by incubation, as most growth of the ovarian oocyte occurs after birth of the tadpoles. Follicular atresia is common and is similar to that of other frogs.

Notes: Microtubule protein extracted from dogfish erythrocyte cytoskeletons by disassembly of marginal bands at low temperature formed linear microtubule (MT) bundles upon reassembly at 22°C. The bundles, which were readily visible by video-enhanced phase contrast or DIC microscopy, increased in length and thickness with time. At steady state after 1 hour, most bundles were 6-11 μm in length and 2-5 MTs in thickness. No inter-MT cross-bridges were visible by negative staining. The bundles exhibited mechanical stability in flow as well as flexibility, in this respect resembling native marginal bands. As analyzed by SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting, our standard extraction conditions yielded MT protein preparations and bundles containing tau protein but not high molecular weight MAPs such as MAP-2 or syncolin. In addition, late fractions of MT protein obtained by gel filtration were devoid of high molecular weight proteins but still produced MT bundles. The marginal band tau was salt-extractable and heat-stable, bound antibodies to mammalian brain tau, and formed aggregates upon desalting. Antibodies to tau blocked MT assembly, but both assembly and bundling occurred in the presence of antibodies to actin or syncolin. The MTs were “unbundled” by subtilisin or by high salt (0.5-1 M KCl or NaCl), consistent with tau involvement in bundling. High salt extracts retained bundling activity, and salt-induced unbundling was reversible with desalting. However, reversibility was observed only after salt-induced MT disassembly had occurred. Reconstitution experiments showed that addition of marginal band tau to preassembled MTs did not produce bundles, whereas tau presence during MT reassembly did yield bundles. Thus, in this system, tau appears to play a role in both MT assembly and bundling, serving in the latter function as a coassembly factor. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: To determine which proteins were associated with and intrinsic to the marginal band (MB) of microtubules (MTs), we studied protein components of MBs isolated from nucleated erythrocytes by differential detergent solubilization of the membrane skeleton (MS). MBs isolated from dogfish erythrocytes contained major proteins in the tubulin Mr range. A high molecular weight protein of ∼290 kD that bound antibody to syncolin and to heat-stable brain MAPs was present in the whole cytoskeleton. However, most of it was solubilized by the MB isolation medium, together with the MS. Dogfish erythrocyte cytoskeletons and isolated MBs were examined with polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against mammalian brain tau and chicken erythrocyte tau. As shown by immunofluorescence and immunoblotting, these antibodies bound to proteins in the 50 to 67 kD range, located along the length of isolated MBs. Two-dimensional SDS-PAGE revealed isolated MB proteins of pI ∼6.8 in the same molecular weight range, as well as α- and β-tubulin with pI ∼5.4. Subtilisin or high-salt treatment of isolated MBs resulted in unbundling of MTs, indicating involvement of MAPs. MBs isolated from chicken erythrocyte cytoskeletons also contained tau as shown by antimammalian brain tau immunofluorescence. Both chicken and dogfish isolated MBs also bound phalloidin, but the binding was usually discontinuous and, for any given MB, matched the pattern of anti-syncolin binding. Both syncolin and F-actin were part of the MS remnant remaining after MT disassembly, supporting their assignment to a specialized MS region at the MB/MS interface. In contrast, tau protein appears to be intrinsic to the MB, where it may have an MT stabilizing and bundling function. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: A number of possible strategies for the preparation of λ5-phosphetes were tested as follows: cyclopropenium 6 was treated with the lithium salt of diphenylphosphine to give phosphinocyclopropene 7, but 7 did not undergo ring expansion upon photolysis or thermolysis. P-chloro-C—trimethylsilyl-substituted ylide 8b reacted with two equivalents of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to afford phosphinine 13 via a transient λ5-phosphete 12. Addition of aluminum trichloride to P-halogenated ylides 17a-b led to dihydrophosphetium salts 19a-b, which, upon treatment with pyridine, isomerized into the 1, 2-dihydrophosphet-2-ium salts 20a-b. Hydrolysis of derivatives 20a-b cleanly afforded phosphoniums 21 a-b, which reacted with NaN(SiMe3)2 to give rise to the corresponding λ5-phosphetes 22a-b. The benzo-λ5-phosphete 22a underwent ring expansion reactions with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate and acetonitrile, leading to benzo-λ5-phosphinine and benzo-1, 4λ5-azaphosphinine in good yields. Derivative 22b was characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Ab initio SCF calculations, IGLO-13C chemical shifts and Δχ for various benzannulated derivatives and phosphorus heterocycles are presented.

Notes: Calculated diagrams, representing chemical and electrochemical properties of concentrated aqueous nitric acid mixtures, have been drawn for temperatures of 25 °C and 100 °C using vapor pressures and thermochemical data of related gaseous species. Electrochemical measurements have permitted the establishment of an experimental potential scale (referenced to the saturated mercurous sulfate electrode at 25 °C) incorporated in the diagram at 100 °C. These measurements also allowed the determination of the Gibbs free energy of formation of dissolved nitrous acid for various nitric acid solutions at 100 °C, leading to a value of ΔGf(HNO2) = -36.31 kJ mol-1, for the whole nitric acid concentration range.

Notes: Structural and conformational studies performed by 1H-, 11B-, 13C-, two-dimensional, and variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy of borane and chloroborane adducts of 1,3,5-heterocyclohexanes and their rearrangement products, boracyclohexanes, are reported. N-Methyl derivatives gave equatorial N-borane adducts whereas the N-isopropyl derivatives produced the axial borane compounds. Rearrangement reactions of the adducts gave the first examples of chloroboracyclohexanes bearing boron and nitrogen atoms as stable stereogenic centers. BClH2 and BCl2H adducts were found to be more stable towards ring rearrangement than the corresponding N-BH3 analogs.

Notes: The molecular structures of 5-methyl-1,3-dithia-5-aziniumcyclohexane iodide, 5-chloroborane-5-methyl-1,3-dithia-5-azacyclohexane, 3,5-bis(borane)-3,5-dimethyl-1-thia-3,5-diazacyclohexane, and 1-borane-1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane were determined by X-ray diffraction studies. Interactions between hydridic and protic hydrogen atoms are present when the distances between hydridic and protic hydrogen atoms are shorter than 265 pm and angles for B-N-C bonds are smaller than 107.6(3)°. These interactions explain the conformation of the borane adducts in the solid state.

Notes: Trinuclear complexes containing pyrazolate bridging ligands of the type [NBu4]2[{(C6F5)2 M(μ-pz)(μ-X)}2M′] (M, M′= Pd or Pt; X = Cl, OH, or pz) (Hpz = pyrazole) have been prepared using [NBu4][M(C6F5)2(acac)] (acac = acetylacetonate) or [NBu4]2[M2(C6F5)4(μ-OH)2] and [M′Cl2(Hpz)2] or [M′(Hpz)4]2+ as starting materials. Asymmetric homo- and heterobimetallic complexes of the types [NBu4][R2M(μ-pz)2Pd(η3-allyl)] and [R2M(μ-pz)2M′L2] (allyl = C3H5 or C4H7; L2 = 2 PEt3 or bipy; R = C6F5 or C6Cl5; M, M′ = Pd or Pt) have been obtained starting from [NBu4][MR2(pzHpz)] and [Pd(η3-allyl)(acac)] or [M′L2Cl2], respectively. The identity of the new complexes has been established by NMR (1H, 19F and 31P) spectroscopy. The crystal structure of [{(C6F5)2Pd(μ-pz)(μ-Cl)}2Pd]2- has an inversion centre, with a bent appearance of the Pd3(μ-pz)2(μ-Cl)2 moiety. The crystal structure of [(C6F5)2Pd(μ-pz)2Pd(η3-C4H7)] has also been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, where a boat conformation of the central “Pd2N4” six-membered rings is observed.
