Notes: We investigate the photo-oxidation process and the corresponding passivation effects on the optical properties of unintentionally doped n-type gallium nitride (GaN). When illuminated with a 253.7 nm mercury line source, oxidation of GaN is found to take place in aqueous phosphorus acid solutions with pH values ranging from 3 to 4. At room temperature, the photo-oxidation process is found reaction-rate limited and has a peak value of 224 nm/h at pH=3.5. Compared with the as-grown GaN layers, threefold enhancement in the photocurrent and photoluminescence response are observed on the oxidized GaN surfaces. These results are attributed to the surface passivation effects due to the deep ultraviolet-enhanced wet oxidation on GaN. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Vegetative nuclear division inTrichophyton terrestre Durie & Frey was studied utilizing the aceto-orcein squash technique. Nuclear division included: no directional preference to the hyphal axis; longitudinal splitting of daughter nuclei; and a haploid chromosome count of four. Interphase and prophase nuclei were morphologically similar to those of higher plants, however, various degrees of chromosome condensation and elongation were noted. Spindle pole bodies were prominent at metaphase.

Notes: Abstract The somatic nuclear division ofChaetomium globosum was studied utilizing acetocarmin and aceto-orcein techniques. Nuclear division in hyphae of this species was found to be mitotic, but diversity in morphology and division configuration was noted. Identifiable chromosomes, the metaphase plate, and the chromosome bridge were commonly seen. A combination of extremely small nuclei, difficulties in staining, multinucleate conditions, and protoplasmic streaming in hyphae presented difficulties for these studies. Contradictory views are held on the structure of the nucleus, presence of the centriolar body, and other karyological features as described byFinley (1970)Rabinow &Bakerspigel (1965). Nuclear division structural details in a few other fungal species such as the centriolar body, spindle apparatus, and nuclear membrane disassociation have been examined by electron microscopy (Motta, 1969;Ichida &Fuller, 1968;Namboodiri &Lowry, 1967). The present study and the previous report onC. globosum (Hsu, Yu &Volz, 1972) presents comparative data for a NASA Appollo 16 MEED Mycology investigation now in progress.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear behavior during ascus development inChaetomium globosum was studied with the use of acetocarmine and aceto-orcein staining techniques. The chromosome behavior, including centriolar bodies and asynchronous disjunction of chromosomes, agreed with the basic pattern reported in Ascomycetes (Olive, 1965). The haploid chromosome complement of this strain appeared to be 6.

Notes: Abstract Four fungal species were selected as the test systems for the Microbial Ecology Evaluation Device (MEED) of Apollo 16. Fungal cells were exposed to various quantitative and qualitative spaceflight parameters then returned for postflight analyses. Survival rates and phenotype numbers varied according to exposure parameters. Additional studies underway will further identify the spaceflight changes.

Notes: Summary An exact elastic-plastic solution for the stresses in a flat ring subject to pressure is obtained on the basis ofJ 2 deformation theory together with a modified Ramberg-Osgood law. The results are assessed on the basis of Budiansky's criterion for the acceptability ofJ 2 deformation theory. By using exact elastic-plastic stresses, the radial enlargement and the permanent increase in thickness of the ring at the hole are obtained. Upon release of the pressure, residual stresses are produced around the hole.

Notes: Summary The theory of continuously distributed screw dislications is used to study the interaction between an elastic-plastic crack and a circular cylindrical hole in an infinite elastic medium. This medium is under uniformly distributed shear load at infinity which produces anti-plane deformation. Exact solutions are obtained for the effect of the hole on the dislocation distribution function, the applied load-plastic zone relationship, the relative shear displacement along the crack and the plastic zone, and the crack-tip opening displacement.

Notes: Abstract The stress intensity factors are determined at the root of a radial crack emanating from a circular hole in an infinite sheet, under uniform tension in the direction at an arbitrary inclination with angle β and uniform in-plane shear, respectively. The stress analysis is carried out using the Muskhelishvili formulation and the conformal mapping. Numerical results of the stress intensity factors are obtained for varying crack length-to-hole radius ratio, L/R.

Notes: Abstract This paper investigates the fracture toughness of a flat large elastic cracked plate containing an elastic circular inclusion, using the plane stress crack-tip stress intensity factor as a criterion for fracture. In this plane stress geometry, each of the two collinear finite cracks is located on either side of the elastic circular inclusion and the geometry is subjected to uniform stresses at infinity. The analysis is based on the two-dimensional theory of clasticity by using the Muskhelishvili complex variable approach. Numerical calculations are reported for the case of simple tension normal to the crack direction, and show the variation of the stress intensity factor with the configuration and elastic properties of the plate and the inclusion.
